Fowler was the First amateur poker player to win the WSOP Main Event bracelet. And the $270,000 first prize was nice too. ( that was A Lot of money back in 1979 )
Sounds good, I can spare 20 bucks my full tilt ID is kazmore5538 =]

Hal called that bet on the flop just trying to hit the gut-shot. Shows he's an amatuer. Of course, he hits it and becomes champ.....but still slow rolls his hand! That pisses me off!!
Um, didn't you hear what Bobby Baldwin said there? He said at 0:28 that Hoff raised it coming in before the flop, and then he put out a pot-sized bet on the flop. Who's slowplaying?

You're only saying that because of all the televised hands you've seen of Gold and Yang. If Hal Fowler's win came after Moneymaker's win in 2003, surely everyone will agree that Fowler was the worst player to ever win the main event.
Agree w/you 100%. Moneymaker looks like Johnny Chan next to Fowler. IIRC Hoff had Fowler all-in and covered 4 different times heads-up and Fowler drew out on him every time.
It was like a 3 table sit n go, and I'm pretty sure back then it was winner take all. Completely different game, and completely different skill set... players actually folded and played much more passively, and much tighter. People have gotten better recently but a couple years ago they played AT and AJ like it was aces. It's more of a chess match when people actually fold.
It wasn't winner-take-all by this point -- 1977 was the last year of that -- but yeah, totally different skills. They had somewhere between 50-55 players in this, and they did indeed play a lot tighter back then. It's only within the last 5 years that AQ against an early-position raise hasn't been an automatic fold.

I think it's funny how Fowler slowrolled on the end and nobody said anything, how the times have changed.

I wonder who has Hal's bracelet.

6-7 is the best hand to have when you're up against A-A. It's the hand that's most likely to come from behind and win.

Five hours, for heads-up play??
Of course, these guys didn't have the jam-or-fold tables to refer to. Today the heads-up match would be over in about ten minutes.
