Thanks for the tutorial as it was quit helpful. I'm doing this on a mac and some steps did not work as they worked for you. I would like to save the modified pic with the checkered (transparent) background so I can use a different background but it would not save that way. How can I get it to save from the white background to the checkered background?

To get layers menu, right click then windows then recently closed docks! not just right click. get it right. place in description or All your videos will be deleted. OK, I cant do that, but you should explain how to get that menu. :)

Too bad the 'lasso' tool in gimp sucks, could have saved you a lot of time. The one in Photoshop layers itself on edges automatically.
