Bed was obstructed. Make SURE there's space near your bed. Better yet, build your house where you originally spawn, so you'll never have to worry about a missing/obstructed bed, because you'll still re-spawn in your house, or at your front door. I do it all the time and it saves me a LOT of worrying.
