  • I get 41MPG on a 2011 Yaris and the EPA says 35. I wonder what this guy would do. Since it is a manual, he'd probably be killing the engine a lot.

  • Slow drivers are as much a public hazard as fast ones. Speed variance is what causes accidents.

  • @misterjag Stupid observation!, and false of course!

  • Looking to increase your website traffic? You can't do it alone, add an affiliate system and let others promote your site,The GAS AFFILIATE SYSTEM, the most powerful promoting tool out there,Because other aff programs require very hard coding to install,Download it at GAS-AFFILIATEdotCOM.

  • 15 MPH? what a waste of effort... yeah you can get 90 miles to the gallon but do you really have 6 hours to spare to do those 90 miles?

  • Many hypermilers tailgate to get better mpgs. I think that this practice is dangerous, and NEVER do it. A lot of people roll with the engine off in cars that have servo brakes and steering. This is dodgy as well. A Prius is a hybrid, and designed to be driven like this. I hypermile in a Renault 4. It doesn't have servo brakes or steering (or a catalyser) What does this mean? I have a very durable car, cheap and easy to repair when it infrequently goes wrong, and still does over 60 mpg

  • the p&G technique is in the speed range of 42mph down to 28mph..then you apply gas back up to 42mph..then feather..the ICE shuts off completely, anyway it can be dangerous on certrain roads. I only do it on 35mph or less roads, not on 45MPH+ but not always.

sometimes I go 80 on the freeway and still get 43 mpg

  • i did this at first, but not really anymore, depends on the road. I just drive it anymore, and still get about 49mpg..good enough.

  • There are lots of things that could save petrol. I.e on the motorway or anywhere there is a reduction in speed limit. As soon as you catch a glimpse of the sign telling you to slow down from 70 to 50, you let off the gas and roll away your speed gradually instead of using the brakes. One of my personal favourites is to find the average speed of stop - start traffic. It is also nicer for the drivers behind you in that they select an appropriate gear instead of clutching and revving and pulling up

  • While it's true that going slower takes longer, going slower also significantly reduces drag on your vehicle and results in an overall far more efficient trip.

  • That's incorrect. The length of time the car is operating has little to do with rate of fuel consumption. A car travelling faster burns fuel at a much higher rate, mostly because as speed increases linearly drag force increases exponentially. I can vouch for this personally, as I've made dozens of 200-mile trips over the same route and paid attention to my fuel consumption over time. Drive slower, burn less fuel.

  • Talking all big behind your screen... You are lucky you don't live near me!

  • wow are you fucking serious??

driving 15 mph on a normal town road makes you a hazard and causes backups/traffic. you may get 80 but the dozen cars behind you starting&stopping is going to be in the high teens.

just be smooth when you drive, you don't have to half the speed limit to get great mileage. i can get ~34 in my 10 year old sports car driving with the flow of traffic. DONT DO THIS BULLSHIT just learn to judge distances so you can maintain rather then slammng the brakes&smashng the gas.

  • I agree 100%.

I cant believe people are that retarded to try this... you always just get a turbo-diesel and get over 40mpg while still being able to drive normally.

  • what was the speed limit on that road? Because 15mph seems a bit slow. You know there are fines for driving too slow...

  • I drive the speed limit everywhere I go, and nobody gets pissed. As long as you give way and don't drive in the left lane, there shouldn't be a problem.

  • I guarantee that hypermilers are safer drivers than average-- they drive SLOWER and so they have longer time to react.

  • this is dangerous and illegal and Iam going to try to stop everyone from doing this by going to my state reps!

  • Driving the speed limit is not against the law, it IS the law.

  • Screw gas mileage. I gun it every time I'm on the road.

  • Hypermiler's usually stay in the right hand lane and do the speed LIMIT. My guess is those who are complaining about hypermilers or those who choose to drive fuel efficiently wish to SPEED. If you choose to drive less than fuel efficiently or complain about those who do, you can't really WHINE about the price of gas because you are part of the problem (especially those who continue to SPEED in their gas guzzlers).

  • please, continue to break the speed limit and get tickets. you help pay for road improvements to help hyper-milers save money!

  • Well, keep paying all your money to the Saudis, you douchebag.

  • Well at least he paid attention to the people around him and made sure he didn't slow them down. As opposed to some people I hear about shutting down their cars on hills and stuff which is a serious safety hazard.

  • well, I can't do it with a Jeep so I have decided to get a horse and a buggy, grow my beard, do wood work and build a barn in one day.

  • I hope that this HP-ing trend doesn't cause a wave of un-courteous drivers who drive slow way under the flow of traffic on the freeways. Could cause other divers to use up more gas from putting on their breaks behind them and accelerating to catch up with the flow of traffic when passing. Not to mention the higher risk of causing an accident. With all the distracted, or burnt out working class drivers on the road, not a good ideal to make oneself an obstacle whom one may not notice fast enough.

  • As long as they are going the speed limit, it is the speeders who will cause the accidents, not the HMers.

  • So is there a special position on the gas pedal you have to hold? I've heard it works something like this -

Too little throttle, and the electric generators kick in, start charging the battery and rob the vehicle of its speed.

Too much throttle and the engine comes on, burning petrol at the rate of a normal car, but get it just right, and the car rolls along on its wheels like a bicycle, with nothing connected, so it only slows down very gradually sue to wind and rolling resistance.

  • I have to say I agree with craker. What's so funny is that while they are filming the video they have someone PASS them. Isn't the whole point for them is to have EVERYONE do it?

This will never work in New Jersey. I'll tell you right now. People are too in a rush to get anywhere and there are way too many people on the road for everyone to start driving like turtles in order to save gas.

  • you're the retard, buddy. the prius drivetrain is totally different than other cars.

  • How does the battery get charged if you keep turning it off and restarting?

Cranking the engine takes the most energy!

BTW, for all those who don't hypermile but want to get more out of your cars then push the shifter into neutral from drive when waiting at a stop light.

  • again, the prius is different. you really don't want the engine to ever charge the battery - that wastes gas. the battery is there to absorb energy that would be lost to braking.

the prius engine has special valve timing and it doesnt take that much energy to get it spinning. plus if the car is moving, the engine is started much like when you 'bump' start a regular car.

  • Hypermiling is a nice concept and does work without any doubt but its just another distraction while driving. Some people can't drive worth a damm with the engine on so just think of these morons trying to concentrate turning the engine off and on all while talking on their cell phones and playing with their GPS.. oh don't forget those special idiots with a LCD on the dash playing a movie too. Oh what a twisted web we weave!

  • actually, you dont have to do anything to turn the motor on and off on a prius. if you let your foot off the gas it will stop the internal combustion engine. once you have driven one for a while you can just feel it in your foot when the engine turns on and off. its really not that much of a distraction. talking on the phone is *way* worse.

  • Well 'pfile', I think its clear I haven't driven one yet but thanks for your enlightment though I think the Smart Car is more efficient. Just think, machines are created by machines which are created by machines. Somehow I think in the long run something else will pop up in regards to pollution and we'll all revert to nonhybrids again. Just like when they said margerine is better than butter then 10 yrs later they found out that butter is better.

  • Nice work Jim. One of the most important aspects and, dare I say, obstacles to attaining super high MPG is other drivers. I like how you observed basic roadway curtesy at the expense of max mpg. :) Being curteous to other drivers is my first concern, milage is second. Although I'm not going to be pushed over the speed limit for them. ;)

  • i have prius classic.. in orlando, too many damn hot heads on your ass and hard to coast for very long .. so i don't see oever 55mpg until summer time .. but then i have to not use the a/c much or use it creatively !

  • Hypermiling is dangerous.

If you turn off the engine and have P/B(power brakes) you can't stop the car!

PS, I love weed. But gov't should cultivate hemp for E85 0r 95 since it grows 8x faster than corn.

  • Noted... that's not really a concern on the Prius though is it? Hypermiling dangerous, possibly... now >$3 a gallon that definitely dangerous for the vast majoriy of us.

PS, E85 is a joke as it needs more energy to produce than we would gain from using it. We'll all see in a few years, E85 is a passing fad, anyone who disagrees... check back with me in a few years.

  • With hybrids the P/B still work as they don't function like a normal car does. This is a function of it being a hybrid.

  • Oh really? Birchmanllc, I've never driven a hybrid so I didn't know for sure about the brakes but seems to me its possible. Thanks for the info bruddah.

  • Haha, I've seen Jim's posts. :)

  • Hypermiling saves money and reduces pollution - I think we need to get the word out about how to save gas - simple things like avoiding traffic, good tire pressure, accelerating slowly, and watching the road ahead.

  • absolutely,here here.

  • Sorry for the audio sync problems.... For some reason when YouTube converted the HD 1080i video it lost sync.
