@mungojerry311 This was the only second shuttle launch George Diller did, so maybe his inexperience was showing somewhat? (no offence to him of course) I don't know if he did any unmanned launches prior to his first shuttle in August of '89.
Although this was a classified DOD mission, you can distinctly hear the Capcom give the 'roger roll' call at 0.41. Wonder if Billie Deason deliberately opened the PAO loop so it could be heard? It sounds a bit like it to me!
All of the first 10 post-Challenger launches in 1988, 1989 and 1990 up to the STS-31 launch in April 1990 were live on the major networks. I still have the old tapes but no way to digitize them. After that ti was rare to have live coverage except for CNN which had almost all of them and sometimes C-SPAN.
I remember this one well. Watched it on CBS with Dan Rather and they showed a couple instant replays form the cameras. This was a Wednesday evening the night before Thanksgiving. About 7:23 p.m. I think.
I'm guessing I'm not sure I've heard other launches that he did and I think it sounds like the others and I watch these videos almost every day

I think the launch capcom is Michael A. Baker

@ncjonson How do you know that? You can only hear him (just) say 'roger roll'! As this was a military mission the air to ground loop was blacked out

Yes C-SPAN sometimes shows shuttle missions and press conferences nowadays as well
