@TrainTrackTrav There was only 20 HR616 built Travis. They where built in 1982, and retired early 1990's. The HR stood for high reliability, which they where not. Lots of electrical problems. The 616 was for 6 axles, 16 cylinder. Some where scraped, some went to NRE in Illinois. I can find nothing about them on their site. So how knows where they are now. Thanks for watching. Jackmp294.5...
@TheSterlingLoopTroop MLW is Montreal Locomotive Works. They took over Alco, (American Locomotive Company) when Alco quit building locomotives in the USA...
The SD-40's a far better machine. Alco never had enough R&D money to get their act together on fuel metering and better turbochargers. The turbo used on the 251 is an ancient Bucci-Elliot design that was obsolete when it was first built. WAY too much mass.
@DeserTBoB93535 The early GE's (Cooper-Bessemer) used Elliotts (as did Nordberg's, some Enterprises and Baldwins). The Alco's I've worked on used their own (Alco-GE) design dating from the 1940-50's after they went to water-cooled types on the 244's. But yes, they always had a lag problem, less so if they used expensive exhaust multi-pipe headers (8 on some 16-cyl. applications).
Ah yes!The HR 616!I had the joy of experiencing one of these at Blue Island il. back in the mid 90's.I heard it before I saw it!!Sounds like an old GE but much more gutteral.and loud!!Loved it!
@avinashi07 Glad you enjoyed it. The ALCO's, GE's, and EMD's all where able to MU here in the states, and Canada. I am not sure that the Baldwin's and FM's where capable of mu'ing with anything other than their makes. Thanks for watching...
@1jackdk I know that the baldwins could not be mated with any other make due to their pneumatic control system but i do remember seeing an old photo of an union pacific "Cities" train that had an E unit on the point and a alco PB, B unit Erie Built and a PA powering the train so i guess F/M's could be mated with other builders
Heheh. The only distinkt the that stands out that it's an ALCo, is the smoke (LOL) and the chugging is much louder. I've seen a C40-8M, I wasn't that loud, however it smoked WAAAAAAAAY more than that. HHMMMMMM?
Another superb video Jack, what is it about these older machines that appeal so much, no matter what part of the World you come from, Is it their masculine power without all this mamby pamby modern stuff....who does it's just amazing to watch...5* Bob
This is what railroading is all about Bob. A good hogger knows just what to do, and this is roll up your sleeves, and get down to business railroading. No computers to cut back the motors when the wheels slip, 2% controled slip on a pull, and all the other crap the computers do. jack
These are the skills that sorted out the men from the boys Jack, but it's all changing and not for the best...when things go wrong now, they don't have the experience to sort things out...Bob
@1jackdk Yeah ALCOs are notorius slippers! Thats an under statement. The center axle has no traction motor. The throttle handle on ALCOs is extremely long and you have to use both hands to notch up or down.
Your not kidding Walter. I'm certainly proud of my Alcoholism, and never even thought about joining the AAA... LOL. Thanks for watching. Take care, Jackmp294
Great sound. Oh, and Jack...I know of a great 1-step treatment program for 'Alcoholism' - you just have to listen to a normally aspirated EMD. Any one will do, but the 567 is most effective. :)
the ALCO sounds like the Hogwarts Express :D

MLW! I love that chufff to it. That is also why i like all the GE standard cabs. The widecabs just plain old suck
shadowknight227 8 months ago
Why the second one is smoking so much ? Can it be that the first one isn't pulling at all or very little
farmguy2400 9 months ago
@farmguy2400 ALCOs have smokey engines while EMDs emit very little fumes.

@DeserTBoB93535 Yeah for sure, an Alco's turbo is the deffinition of lag hence the black smoke!
