  • It looks like to purchase a new adapter is in the $350-$400 range. What was your total costs for the DIY project??

  • @MrNinteyNine The adapter's cost was about 350$ with the Pentax lens.

  • very nice quality from this camera good job

  • Wow, amazing quality! This has got to be the best quality images i've seen from a DOF adapter, great work! :D

  • Did you shoot this in 24p and if so was it standard or the PAL version?

  • @TwinTerrorStudios NTSC version 24P

  • Nice video ! btw what kind of focusing did you use ?

  • @lonestarsadman what do you mean by focusing?

  • what was the size of the file, and what file type did you export in, if you dont mind me asking?

  • @shinjiketsu it was MPEG2 Video 1440x1080 (16:9) 23.76fps 25000kbps, file size 223MB

  • do u think i can use it the pentax super takumar 5ommf1.4 w/a encinema 35mm adapter

  • At first I thought it was off a commercial, good job!

  • how much would it cost for all of the materials? i am very interested in building a rig for my HV40 but i dont want to bust my wallet

  • @frenchxtoastx87 I built this adapter a year ago, so i think the prices increased. Check out the tutorial(s) I metioned in the video description, You can find there the materials, and then look up on ebay.

  • whats the best order of post ? Convolution kernel (sharpen), color corrector, brightness & contrast? or maybe color corrector, brightness and contrast and then Sharpess ??? . And Why? . Thanks for your ask.

  • @ariza35mm I think sharpen should be last in the order, because sharpness increases the video's blockiness and artifacts much more compared to a solid color correction or brightness boost.

  • Hey, I have just bought one of this DOF adapters. A brevis one :) And I was just wondering, when I look on the LCD it shows all the dark stuff AROUND the actual shot I want, do I need to zoom in? And if so, won't that make it TOO zoomed in? Thanks :)

  • @MrJoshuaYoYo Yes, you have to zoom in to avoid too much hot-spot. You should check your LCD if the image is still in focus after you zoomed in, because too much zoom can limit your focus abilites.

  • @sebipayne Thanks a lot :) Yeah, well I just bought it today and, obviously, am finding it a tad hard to get a hold of! It wasn't really in focus when I zoomed it, but I hadn't put the slide of glass in yet, so I'll try then. Hopefully I'll get the hang of it soon as I'm hoping to start filming my short film! :) Thanks again.

  • this looks preaty good..for a HV30.... not bad

  • super video !!!

  • What editing sofrware do you use? :) Is Imovie Hd good enough for this quality output?

  • can someone tell how this looks so clear!? I have the twoneil hv30 and 1.8 lens....it doesn't come close to looking like this. what export settings did u use and does ur lens make all the difference? this looks like a damn commercial.

  • @lightmydank I think the color correction can help a lot besides the dof adapter.

  • I don't like the "snow" effect over the video.

  • What is the purpose of having 2:3 pulldown removed?

  • @arnelmesa the hv30 doesn't shoot at native 24p, so u can notice a lot of ghosting when the subject is moving. When u remove pulldown, it gets rid of that. That's why this video looks so god damn good. Why doesn't mine look like this!

  • @lightmydank Thanks for clearing that up.

  • i have an hv30 and a twoneil static adapter but it doesn't come close to looking like this...does ur lens do most of the work? i have the f 1.8

  • @lightmydank

the main effect here is colour correction- its usually found in any decent editing program.

  • @Treemeadow but the quality of it...it looks so crisp and i want to know what the difference between his lens and mine....besides the price.

  • Comment removed

  • @lightmydank Yes, it's an hv30 with my dof adapter, and my lens is in the video description.

  • The composition of these shots are very well done! This really does show off DOF very well! :)

  • this is beautiful.

  • wow

  • haha. it makes something as simple as drawing a flower look like a movie

  • i have this lens mounted on my father's old Pentax Camera.

Is really this lens so sharp on a digital canon?

Because i have a 550D and i could really enjoy using this lens

  • @MrJippaLippa Yes, it's a really sharp lens. With 550D it would be even sharper than my setup.

  • @sebipayne that's awesome.

    I'll surely buy an adapter.

    Thanks for the answer ^^

  • @sebipayne Holy cow, I have got to get this camera.

  • Whats the name of the song?

  • @Fresh0nline Mood Indigo - Golden Light

  • Do these 35mm adapters give you an inverted image when your recording raw footage? Cause I know Jag35 adapters are inverted and you have to flip them upside down in post production.

  • @ICEx03 At this time my camera is mounted upside down on an IndiRailsPro XVSM20 shoulder rig, so i don't have to flip my image in post, but I still see an inverted image on my HV30 LCD screen, that's why I want to build a DIY external 720p HD monitor.

  • @sebipayne Oh I see. Because I just can't see my camcorder being upside down every time I'm recording, gives me a feel something will malfunction inside.

  • My jaw dropped when I saw this!

This looks better than Redrock adapter footage! This is amazing, it rivals the quality of my 7d. What is light loss like?

  • @Theelephantsays Thanks! The light loss is quite big. I don't know it exactly, but i think it's around 1-2 stops.

  • Great work my friend. definitely great work. besides all the camera gear. would you acknowledge the use of proper lighting as well?

  • @cutCouture The natural lights looked so good, that's why i didn't use any lamps or whatever. But it could have been better with light reflector.

  • Hey this looks great. What frame rate did you shoot at? I wonder if you did it at 24p, because I have a horrible time with Sony Vegas 8.0's pulldown with 24p on an HV30. The information loss in motion makes the thing look like an old BBC production.

  • @FlyingOverTr0ut I shot it in 24p, and removed pulldown in post production.

  • @sebipayne Thanks. What program or codec did you use to remove the pulldown?

  • @FlyingOverTr0ut I demuxed the HV30′s .m2t file to m2v with MPEG Streamclip, then i was able to open the m2v in VirtualDubMod. Then i chose the “Reconstruct from fields – adaptive” (3:2 pulldown removal) in the VirtualDubMod’s Frame Rate control. Then i rendered the footage (with xvid codec), and i got the results.

  • que imagenes mas bellas, felicidades!

  • Vibrating Dof adapter?

    what is the name please?

    look awesome

  • @shyland20 I wrote the details in the video description. :)

  • oh my lord.....

the quality of the hv series still continues to amaze me

  • This looks absolutely fantastic! Great job!

  • @702IDGAF I really don't have the time to build adapters for selling.

And it also would'nt be cheap.

But I can help you with a great site that contains very useful DIY Dof adapter tutorials here:

jetsetmodels (dot) info/tutorials (dot) htm ;)

Also if you want to buy one ready to use dof adapter you should check this site: jag35 (dot) com

    Cheers,

    SEBI

  • @sebipayne wow great stuff on the site.. may I ask what plans you used? Thanks

  • @CMxPROD What do you mean by plans? If you want to know how i built my adapter, check it in the video description.

  • This footage is amazing.. How much did your diy adapter cost? Nice composition!!!

  • @CMxPROD Thanks! It was cost around 300$ with the Pentax lens.

  • Whats about this convolution kernel? soundy pretty interesting!

    Nice Footage btw!

  • @erish2k5 I used Convolution kernel in Sony Vegas with the Sharpen default preset. In my opinion this preset looks much better than the regular sharpening.

  • What's the name of the song????

  • @bikadini Mood Indigo - Golden Light

  • i have strong doubts that this video was made, using a diy dof....

  • @robblac Why do you think that?

  • @sebipayne looks too good..all the other diy adapters i have seen look a bit dirty and poor.

  • @robblac It depends on the quality of the adapter, the lighting, the composition, camera movements, great focus pulling etc...

In fact this footage was made by my canon hv30 + diy dof adapter, however this is one of my best footage with the adapter. I also have worse samples, so i'm not joking. :)

Check out my newest video "Wine Festival". It also contains diy dof shots.

  • hello again :) what does the vibrating motor do exactly? i was looking at a pdf for a rig and saw this. does it vibrate the groundglass in accordance with the shutter or something??? lol im clueless

  • @kudjo24 Yes it vibrates the ground glass, and i have to use ~1/50 shutter speed with it.

  • which kind of adapter was used on this? Looks great!

  • @sonne5 Thanks! This is my own DIY adapter.

  • @sebipayne how did you make it??

  • Just lovely.. I am torn between the HG20 and this one. Can anyone give me some important pros and cons of each?

  • @andros1984

Well the HV40 has a focus ring but the HG20 does not.

Also the HV40 records to Mini DV which always has better quality than hardrive.

I mean over all I think the HV40 wins over the HG20.

  • @VidPro95 Thanks for replying. I am looking more toward the HV now. Good luck with your projects.

  • @andros1984 You should check the Panasonic HDC-TM700 too. I heard quite good reviews of it. It's tapeless. It can record 1080p in 60fps (!!) with better line resolution than the Canon 5D MKII. Improved lens with f1.5 aperture wide open. Etc...

If i were you, now i would buy the Pana instead of HV40. But the HV40 isn't bad at all, just a bit outdated nowadays for that price. :)

  • @sebipayne interesting..i googled it and that is pretty impressive. however, im still confused as to HOW you attach a DOF adapter and 35 or watev mm lens using the original camera and support rods, etc? have you shot a tutorial on how you built yours yet? ill go look, but if not then you should, cuz i'm pretty much in the dark. thanks!

  • @kudjo24

  • How did you do the pulldown? Video looks nice has a good film look.

  • @ngvgnDOTcom Thanks!

I demuxed the HV30's .m2t file to m2v with MPEG Streamclip, then i was able to open the m2v in VirtualDubMod. Then i chose the "Reconstruct from fields - adaptive" (3:2 pulldown removal) in the VirtualDubMod's Frame Rate control. Then i rendered the footage (with xvid codec), and i think i got great results. The rendered video shows 23.9**Fps, no additional frames, and it seemes to be clear without ghosting.

  • Sorry if i sound stupid, but what exactly does a DOF adapter do?

  • @rockleetlotus You can achieve shallow depth of field with it.

  • Does this adapter shoot with the image upside down? Did you have to flip it in post production?

  • @arnelmesa I have a Shrigg rig, so now i don't have to flip it in post.

  • @sebipayne Where did you get your Shrigg rig?

  • @arnelmesa From the original Shrigg rig manufacturer: indisystem(dot)com

  • very nice dof look!

  • hello bro, exellent job

one question did you use a 35mm adapter or a 50mm ????? please explain

btw this is the best and the most pure

video on youtube and has a great film look :)

  • @pilot7am Thanks!

Everybody calls these adapters 35mm dof adapters because you can use traditional photography lenses with them, and the lenses projects the image to a full frame sized (35mm) ground glass unit inside the adapter.

So I only used a 50mm lens with my adapter.

  • @sebipayne thanx for replying :) !!!!

still didnt get it did you use a 35mm adapter or no ?

did you use a 50mm with a step down ring only ?

  • @pilot7am I can't explain it better way. The adapter itself called 35mm dof adapter. But you can use any lenses, what you want. Mine is 50mm lens. But i could use 28mm, 100mm, 200mm, etc, anything. Here, the 50mm is the focal length of the lens. Lens is NOT a 35mm dof adapter. 2 different things.

You should search for "Depth-of-field adapter" on wikipedia, and you'll get the point. :)

  • @sebipayne please help i know i am making you tired but please treat as a nooob, ok if i don't want the depth of field i just want the 35mm lens to be attached to my hv40 to have a film look without a a DOF adapter, can i do that ???

btw from where did you get yours ??

    :)

  • @pilot7am You can't get shallow depth of field without Dof adapter.

I built it myself. You can find useful tutorials here: jetsetmodels(dot)info/tutorials(dot)htm

  • @sebipayne ok is jag35 pro a good product you think ?

  • seb... it looks like a commercial.. thats how PERFECT this peice is.. amazing.. this will show that the hv30 is better to buy than a regular home video camcorder

  • This looks amazing! What does it mean when you had the 2:3 pulldown removed?

  • @arnelmesa Unfortunately the HV30 records 24p in a 60i stream, so it's not really native 24p. I have to remove pulldown with a difficult method to get true 24p out of the HV30.

  • Clean.

  • This is amazing!

  • didt you make it your self?

best 35mm so far on youtube !

  • @Herdstudio Thank you very much! Yes, it's DIY. :)

  • How is this adapter in low light situations? Any graininess?

  • @furiousracer313 I think in low light it's acceptable. There's quite big light loss, and the HV30 has a very small CMOS CCD. The more light available, the better image quality it has.

  • best Hv30 with adapter I have seen. Very nice. Can you give us the specifications on what settings you used on your camera and lense?

  • @sdhtran Thanks!

Specs are in the video description.

  • could you email me directions on how to do this? I have an HV40 and am planning a shortfilm and would really appreciatte some help. chduke87@hotmail

  • @chduke87 Do you want to build your own DOF adapter?

If so, you can find useful DIY Dof adapter tutorials on this site:

    jetsetmodels (dot) info/tutorials (dot) htm

    Cheers,

    SEBI

  • Thank you!

I also used Convolution kernel to sharpen the image, but a i like it, it seems to be better quality for me.

I have sometimes ground glass issues when i stop down my takumar from f2.8. Maybe i should use a better pancake motor, because mine is from a cell phone. :P

  • whoa! At first I thought this was an HD-DSLR! Nice!

  • 50mm tak? whoa, the quality is superb. O.O i have also a tak and a canon 500d, but i cant shoot near this quality. whoaw!
