yess, you need a modchip OR the homebrew channel,

i surgest the homebrew channel (it is a wii channel that you load onto your wii which enables you to play burnt games without a modchip) && ITS FREE,

google it or look it up on youtube, if you dont know what it is,

and, yes, you can just rent games and burn them, its what i do and they work 100% fine, so google "how to backup wii games" and click the first link and it tells you step by step, better than the tutorial :)
