But in our real world it has been over 60 years since WW2 (during those 5 years military technology gained in leaps and bounds) since then super governments have been spending more and more on these tech weapons, if even a 1/4 of the funds between then and now was spent on space travel maybe we would be harvesting resources of other planets instead of 3rd world countires...

They have a financial reserve of over 1 trillion dollars while the usa is in debt by trillions. China is using it's wealth not on helping its poor but on modernising the infrastructure and especially the army.
USA still has a bigger airforce but the chinese are catching up. USA does have a much larger naval fleet however.
