  • Wow

  • the doll song was great!

  • bitch is lying on her back like IT AINT NO THING.

  • :| Stunning

  • She reminds me of a young Sutherland !

  • @binabaum and now the Sutherland comparisons begin . . . . . thanks a lot :/ let Laura have her identity

  • I've done Laura's hair when I assisted a hairdresser in Houston. Lovely young lady!

  • OMG!!!!

  • My favorite for this aria.

  • I like her.

  • Nice stage direction...and the singer's not too shabby. lol Wow!

  • WAHNSINN!!

  • EARGASM. THIS IS THE DEFINITION OF IT.

  • PERFETTA MAGNIFICA DEGNA DI CANTARE CARO NOME DI VERDI:)

  • I can't believe this didn't get a more rousing applause. If I were there I wouldn't have been able to control myself. I would have freaked out after the rolling around on the ground while singing C and D6's.

  • Ugh, this makes me sick. She is just too, too good.

  • Mesmerizing!!! Gads, what a perfect voice! I was so lucky to see her in a live performance of Rigoletto in Toronto about 15 years ago. I'll never forget her performance. She nailed it then; but nut as much as she nailed it here. What a voice!!

  • She is PEERFECT!!!!Fantastic vocal technic!

  • omg she is perfect!

  • Her timbre...is the perfect vehicle for this aria.

  • I had the great luck to see this exact performance live. I don't think anyone in the audience breathed the whole time she was singing. The applause went on at least five minutes. Laura Claycomb: God incarnate as a coluratura voice.

  • I never tire of listening to this video. She was stupendous in Dallas in March.

  • Это просто чудо!

  • Stunning - Yes remember the greats but, there has to be new greats and she must be one of them. These news girls also have to act unlike, dare I say, our old favourites,

  • This is so beautiful! This woman is very underrated in my book. She should be getting a lot more attention! I love her Bel Canto! :)

  • Ladies and gentlemen? I believe we have the present generation's greatest coloratura soprano.

  • A more accurate, artful and well-acted performance would be very difficult to find anywhere: today, tomorrow and even yesteryear.

  • Oh, I LOVE her timbre!

  • She was simply divine in Dallas Wednesday, 03-30-2011. How she can lie down on her back or on her side, recline back, sit down or lean over & still make those luciious sounds is beyond me.

  • @65willows I play in the dallas opera orchestra, and yes she was indeed wonderful.

  • @PTCello My son is in the chorous. I had not heard Ms. Claycomb sing before, and so we attended at his insistence. No one will ever have to prod me to see her again, should the opportunity present itself.

  • 棒棒棒

  • She is doing it in dallas right now. She hasn't sung out yet, and tonight, she didn't sing at all, but either way, Sutherland is better.

  • @PTCello Welp guess we should stop having opera. Everything's been sung better by Callas or Sutherland or Pavarotti, no point performing opera any more.

  • @regulargonzalez hahaha Oh Gosh I guess that did sound rather snooty. I didn't intend it so. Mea Culpa...

Sutherland was the greatest, but Claycomb is wonderful and I love her acting, and singing.

  • @PTCello Haha, no worries, I just get a bit crabby after seeing people on every video basically saying that exact thing, but in earnest. My apologies if I misinterpreted your remark.

  • @regulargonzalez

Well, actually I do think sutherland is better, but as a friend of mine noted,"No one is Sutherland, but that doesn't mean they aren't great"

  • Dear Laura, teach me.

  • Simply Beautiful voice! A true listening pleasure. A very lovely lady with a truly amazing vocal gift.

  • Absolute perfection! The spin in the sound is is unbelievable. Consisten transitions through the registers, effortless top notes and gorgeous phrasing and articulation. BRAVA!

  • mai sentita Caro Nome fatta così perfettamente!!! che voce limpida e piacevole! e che mi finale! mi sono innamorata...

  • LAURA: PLEASE, PLEASE give us the E in Dallas!!!!

  • how the freak did she hit that super c like that?????????

  • THIS IS SO BEAUTIFUL ITS BEYOND WORDS!!!!!

  • I think the essence of this aria is a simplistic and easy delivery. claycomb nails it.

  • holy moly.

  • Unearthly rendition. Brava!

  • Flawless, absolute perfection!

  • WOW!! What a cool ending to this aria! Never heard it done like that before!! BRAVA!!! I enjoyed the whole thing thoroughly.

  • Beautiful!! Brava!!!

  • I'm going to see her in Lucia di Lammermoor in Pittsburgh in a few weeks. I can't wait. It will be my first Opera.

  • Oh! - applause, applause, applause!!!

  • How will I ever be able to listen to this aria sung by another singer now?? Nobody will be able to top this! Unbelievable!

  • veramente fantastica....

  • Невероятный голос) Была на премьере в Большом Зале им. Чайковского в Москве на Сказки Гофмана,Жак Оффенбах. Она там невероятна!

  • SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII SSIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII CADENZA FINALE COME NN SI FACEVA DAGLI ANNI 50 SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII

  • what the hell!! is she human!!!?? she's absolutely fantastic! great technique!! Beautiful trills!! Interpretation with taste! damn.. she should be overrated!!!!

  • Jesus!

  • Ma Brava!!!

  • To those 4, are you def????????????????? Listen to that bejeweled tone while she's laying on the ground!!!!!!!!! I'm sure Madame Reri Grist is even jealous! This is one of the best performances of Caro nome that we'll ever get to see!!!!

  • Such passion paired with such caressing gentleness. Her voice is so beautiful.

  • She will be in Lucia this November at the Pittsburgh Opera!

  • Brilliant!

  • Mon dieu! The Gilda of our time. Where are all the big opera house directors?! Waiting until she's 55 to sign her, as usual. Ugh!

  • 2:43!!!! ♥

  • her voice is so....so....so....i don't how i can describe it...♥ in the upper register its so...dazzling! It gave me chiillsszzzzzzzz

  • BRAVA!

  • FYI, she will be singing this role next year at the Dallas Opera staring March 25, 2011. It's also my birthday. I will DEFINITELY be there.

  • @jpalakiko Really? I'll have to make a trip out there to see it - that's my birthday as well!

  • Thanks forGod! There are geniuses yet!

  • Una nueva estrella brilla en el firmamento...Laura Claycomb , maravillosa cantante norteamericana con una técnica magistral ,una frescura única, además buena actris,la esperamos ver mas en España.

  • astounding

  • Best caro nome ever.

  • This aria doesn't get any better than this....

  • hot damn!

  • Where is it?I mean opera house and orchestre?Thanx

  • Houston Grand Opera

  • Die Sängerin schaut aus wie ein Bauerntrampel.

    Aber sehr schön gesungen.

  • ЧУдесно!

  • guau!!me quedé atónita!

  • That was freaking amazing.

  • She has so much control that she can sound as beautiful as bird singing while on her back!

  • Wow. A real "golden age" type voice. The final top E was lovely....so rare to hear...in live performance yet!

  • So perfect and beautiful I could die. I have yet to hear a soprano live who blows me away as much as she does. She is a gift to opera.

  • I went last saturday to see her, it was awesoome!!

  • Glorious!

  • Que C'est beau! Merci AV

  • Sono felice, sentito sua Gilda in Salero 28 di settembre.BRAVISSIMA!!!

  • Laura C, could arguably be the next

Joan Sutherland , she is unbelievably reminiscent of the Great Dame Joan Sutherland and she's got better diction than Joan as well.

    Fantastic , i haven't heard better, 5 Stars*****

  • I listen to her first in Idomeneo and then in les contes d'hoffman and I had the same feeling as you! She reminded me of that deep, warm but at the same time, agile, great high notes... I even wanted to post that comment on youtube!!! We should create a youtube fan-club of Laura!!!

I really do believe she's amazing!

  • Excelente!!!

  • Phenomenal! I had heard just the audio of this before, but to see the video where she sings the entire cadenza lying down, I'm stunned at the ease, clarity and control -- that spinning tone on high is otherworldly. This is the Caro Nome of my wildest dreams. This is why i love high sopranos.

  • Absolute GOLD AND DIAMONDS.This soprano is INSUPERABLE there

  • O my this is just marvelous. It is a treasure to find another soprano end with the E. Bravo!!!

  • HOLY MY CATHOLIC MOTHER that is amazing!

  • the high E flat @ the end, she was emulating Leontyne Price, but Laura was, in my opinion, better

    she's a new shining star!

  • That's an E natural, but there was a very long tradition of interpolating it that predates Price.

Tettrazzini, D'Angelo, Pons, Peters & Callas (though transposed to Eb) are just several that are recorded.

  • its an E natural, and her voice type is nothing like price, at all.

  • BESTOPERALOVER, when and where was this performed? Thank you for posting.

  • I believe this is the info:

Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile 1997

    Rigoletto: Leo NUCCI

    Duque de Mantua: Tito BELTRAN

    Gilda: Laura CLAYCOMB

  • @coryisawake NOPE - Looks like Houston Grand Opera, 200??

  • How many could do this, make it look so effortless, and have such obvious fun doing it? Impressive!

  • How beautiful!!! I'm speechless... her cadenzas were perfect, the tone, the EVERYTHING! Love her... I believe I've found a new favorite

  • maravillosa...que voz tan prodigiosa...canta como le da la gana...que tecnica y que sonido tan espontaneo

  • She's amazing!

  • Move over, Maria.

  • My heart just stopped...absolutely incredible!

  • ugh i hate her because I'm so completely jealous of her sense of ease in her whistle. Which is way i proclaim that i love her. How fabulous was that?!?!

  • this woman deserves more recognition then she gets...maravillosa!!!! what a technique, I simply love her and her miraculous instrument.

  • I've gotta agree with you there. She's definitely got that star quality in her singing. She SO owned that aria and the moment.

  • I love her so much

  • 2:15 = FORESHADOW

Pretty bomb singing! I wish the vid quality was a little higher.

  • What a PIANISSIMO!!!

  • no the h she not laying down for that entire CADENZA!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO AMAMAMAMAZING!!!!!!!!!

  • Esta mujer es un prodigio de la naturaleza...maravillosisima.

  • I have no idea how she makes everything sound so damn effortless. Great technique... fine acting actress.

This particular interpretation, just sounds more girlish and lilting. She can do no wrong, as far as I am concerned.

  • Awesome vocals!

  • We've been so lucky to have her sing Gilda at Houston Grand Opera more than once. She also sang this aria at our Gala a couple of years ago. She was amazing how she held the high e as she exited the stage. She's a lovely lady in person too.

  • Gilda exceptionnelle! Technique et musicalité exemplaires, bravo!

  • very VERY nice really !

  • Such ease and grace, this is truly amazing!

  • WOW!!!!!!

  • This is INSANE. What gorgeous, natural singing. Where can I hear this in person?!!

  • Vai, Laura! Questo e belissimo!

  • exquisite!!!! I could listen to this all day.

  • Speechless

  • BestOperaLover - thank u so much for posting this!

I've been studying opera for years and listening and just NOW am starting to know the talent that's named Laura Claycomb! Amazing, so musical and does portamenti WITHOUT scooping or cooing and is theatrical all in one! And a healthy voice!

  • Go 'Head, Laura!!! Work it out!!!

  • i cried for the last 5 minutes of this piece! the beauty is so extreme! brava!

  • Wow!! This is the most beautiful Caro Nome I have ever heard.

  • bellissima !

  • where has she been?...how have I just found her??? I'm sure not going to lose her....Laura rules my world!!!!!!!

  • She hits a pianissimo high note lying down. What am i doing wrong?!

  • omg! I looove her!! :D

  • I was in the audience for her professional debut of this role. I don't remember an ovation as raucous and heartfelt as the one she elicited. Why is she not more widely known?

  • what a great high note!!!

  • bravissima, estupenda, wonderwoman! i love her and her glorious instrument.

  • PERFECT!

  • bravissima!

  • Holy God! What the hell just happened here?! That was breathtaking.

  • when was this? That was perfect. I loved every single part of voice (low, middle and especially her high)..very ringing..she can give famous sopranos a run for their money 5/5

  • ummm,,,she is a famous soprano

  • she might be famous but she inst as well known as dessay, fleming, netrebko...even though shes just as good as they are...if not better.I know a great deal of opera singewrs..and i never heard of her until i checked this clip out

  • I don't think Fleming and Netrebho have come close to this in their entire career. Maybe Dessay 10 years ago...

  • thats what i am saying...its like marketability over talent now these days in opera..Laura has the most beautiful soprano and she makes it look so effortless..cant say that about fleming and Anna..

  • I love how she trills extremely well and hits an E6 like it's no big deal.

    *fumes with jealousy* LOL!

  • i know exactly what u mean LOL

  • @renethel She probably practices this non-chalant behavior a lot. "Honey, what's for dinner? Your hair looks nice. *sings E6* Pass the salt.

  • @CantoSemper49 the best way to do it!

  • Speechless. BRAVA!

  • oh my goodness! She's the Gilda of my dreams!

  • OMG....that was beautiful.enough said.

  • Up there with the very, very best of all times! A perfection

  • This is marvelous. The phrasing, breath support and the interconection with words and music is so well done. She is perfect singer.I never heard before this name. She delivers perfection on stage.

  • Best control i hv ever heard

  • Laura claycomb is one of the best lyric coloraturas I have heard in a long time. Wonderful stage prescence, great control, and the voice is something very special. Excellent!

  • WOW! I usually do not like stunt singing where they make the heroine roll around on the floor - BUT in this instance, I have to say I am impressed! That was beautiful. I got to see Claycomb in LA about 10 years ago in Capuletti e Montechi and she was delightful. Who can tell why she doesn't have a bigger name? Its all about publicity. Ah la pu-bli-citee....

  • Brava! mi piace molto!

  • Simply the best! Enhorabuena Lauretta!

  • God, sing woman, sing!!! This Gilda is best only to Gruberova and Guiterrez... those 3 take the cake!

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why is she not a big star at the MET????????? Such an artist.

It is rare to hear a singer sing the final cadenza in tune, and she nails it. Brava

  • Wow! That was fantastic! Brava!

  • My favorite "Caro nome" WAS Andrea Rost's on the La Scala recording. Not anymore! :-)

  • Wow...this is absolutely unreal. I thought that the world of opera was becoming rather weak, but Gutierrez and Claycomb are showing that, in the talent department at least, opera is alive and kicking. This is fantastic. She's got as much of a high register as Gutierrez though I prefer the latter's middle voice.

  • Geezum crow!! How does this video have under 10,000 views?!? This thing has more listens on my iPod than views on Youtube (not really, but come on! This video is practically perfection!).

  • Where did you find this??

  • I want to say that this was at the Met, but could definitely be wrong. I saw this production at the Houston Grand Opera about 5 years ago, and to hear it live is beyond belief.

  • Yes, this is at HGO

  • Rigoletto will be returning to the Houston Grand Opera during the 2008-2009 season. I don't know if Laura Claycomb will be reprising as Gilda, but I'll bet she will.

  • nope, it's some russian soprano, who played queen of the night last season, (i didn't care for her). but claycomb will be doing brittens midsummer nights dream.
