2/2 I think the first newsbeat i heard i only rememeber them saying "the second tower has now just collapsed" i was unaware at that time the first had collapsed. when i finally got home the first images i saw were of the 2nd plan flying into the tower (the often shown shot where it is eclipsed by the first tower hit) and then the shot of the north tower and its antenna collapsing. very shocking day. having seen so much footage, its making me shiver hearing this again just how i first heard it
1/2 thanks so much for posting this is how i FIRST heard of the attacks, i was 17, in college. i missed the bus home so was waiting for my dad to come pick me up, in the mean time i went to the common room around 3:15pm (social place students hang out) the radio was still on 2 ppl were still there. before an actual news beat i was first aware of Chris Moyle not doing his usual play around style show and i remember saying "were going to go back to new york now, find out the latest.."
I listened to this on a small radio on my desk at work. The Mark and Lard show was the highlight of my day while i sat at the computer clicking away in boredom.
They were very restrained and respectful as news filtered through that 100,'s or 1000's of people might have died. That might not sound like much but its something they were seldom known for.
@xGRYFONx it's something that i wish i could get hold of. people have said to me how well mark radcliffe acted during the event, not only then but for the rest of the week too. the only time i dropped in at the time i must admit is when chris moyles was on around 3.15pm, and he was talking to a friend of his called 'american joe' about the attacks, who was based in new york and worked for emi. thanks for the comment, i hope someday i'll hear what happened on radio 1 in full.
@xGRYFONx It's what I was listening to on a building site just north of Coventry 10 years ago, A very strange day, most people wanted to get home to see what the frig was going on!
@xGRYFONx The first I heard about the attacks were on their radio show. Mark and Lard said something like "We're going to stop the comedy stuff today because of the planes that have fallen out of the sky in America". Poignant stuff.
You can hear the news reader's voice wavering, she definitely sounds very shocked.
