but isn't a 'for' loop effectively the same as an 'if' statement?

You could do the y<x and keep adding 1 to y until y=x, but surely you can use that under a 'for' loop, or an 'if' statement?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Nope, it won't work with the 'if' statement simply because the 'if' statement is only executed once. The 'while' loop is similar to the 'for' loop, and what you asked will work with the 'while' loop. 'for' is essentially an abbreviated form of a 'while' loop that has an incrementing variable.

you need to save the file same as the class name .

example : class loops{} so you need to save your file name as loops.java
