@vaduzcrew It's about loving someone, but knowing that if you hold too tightly to them they will fly away like a butterfly. The butterfly is a metaphor for the boy who wants to fly away from her.
This encapsulates perfection for me - musically, emotively, lyrically, melodically. Tori, the genius. Ever grateful to have shared this life with such a wonderfully creative human being. You warm my spirit and touch the heart of me.
Before she became HUGE - I was blessed to see Tori live 3 times - small venues with no cover charges - amazing, she is amazing. Many thanks for this beautiful upload nalli77 - peace ;.)
lol, hey nalli, you say you have excesssive compulsive disoredr? Is that because of the numbers thing? I have this number thing, but I see these these as a idiocyncrasy and nothing else. I count shit and remember insignificant shit like locker numbers in high school. And I also was born in 63,lol.Tori is so beautiful, and so talented.I could listen to her sing all day every day.Oh now as I read other comments, are you obsessive with Tori and not dates and numbers, they call that stalking, lol.JK
I count the steps of the stairs and I count the letters of the words to find out whether their total is a multiple of five (i.e., 'multiple' has 7 letters, but if I take 'multiple of' I got 10, which is a multiple of 5). And when I hear about dates, I sum the numbers (i.e.: you were born in 63; 6+3=9; 9 is a multiple of, it is actually 3x3, and 3is a sacred number for the ancient numerology). I don't know why I do this!
I love this version. One of the major bitchy complaints about this song from Certain Fans is its "adult contemporary" sound (lol...right); but, I'll admit it's fascinating to hear how different this song is stripped down and done with old-style "just Tori and a piano" purity. Personally, I liked the studio arrangement,: I found it appropriately lush and romantic. But this way, the exquisite, crystalline melody really emerges, and it's easy to see that this is truly another timeless Tori ballad.
oh man, people this why i love tori. she is such an amazing performer, its beyond compliment. what i just don't get is why the rest of the planet isn't flipping over backward for tori as well. but anyways this a perfect example of one of her songs that is just BETTER live on the piano than it is in the studio.there are many many other songs that are the same. some however i do prefer the studio version over the live versions, but i just love tori, bottom line. period.
This is a very beautiful song. I really like Tori singing this enchantingly ang with much grace. I also like the part when she sort of lovingly purrs like a cat. Her pronounciation, well, in one of her interviews (in a talk show?), she said that she kind of like to play with words.
It's not very often that a live performance can surpass the original recording... but, this live version of Sleeps with Butterflies is definitely by 1000 miles, better than the original!! I know some of you will disagree - but that's how I feel.. I tend to read the lyrics to a song before I listen to it, the song is very passionate, intimate, and somewhat sad.. I would've like to hear it recorded just on piano.. would've been amazing! Now i know!
now, i wonder who will actually NOT agree with you on this. I mean, you are absolutely right, this song works much better without the cheesy acoustic instruments and multi-layered vocal arrangement. I didn't like it when i first listened to it even when I admired the lyrics from the very beginning, then i heard her perform it stripped down to just piano and... frankly, i am on the verge of tears every time i listen to it. (I still consider Beekeeper her least succeed record, though)
@caliboiblu Yeah, she does that a lot. Check out 'Maybe California' live on UK Absolute Radio. Also there's a version of 'A Sorta Fairytale' recorded from a Swedish TV show that just blows me away. :)
she's from North Carolina but she lives in Cornwall (England) with her husband and daughter so she's got a little accent sometimes...but sometimes she simply sings words differently and no one knows why, y'know it's just because she's tori amos.
From what I know she actually lived in the D.C. area for many years. I have relatives who went to her father's church. {he was a minister}....This song is beautiful! I agree with what you say about the production but the words and the way the song flows is so beautiful it blows me away!
Ahhh. All tingly now. :)

I like this version much better than the recorded album version. It sounds more sad and sincere without all the backing vocals during the chorus.
