That version of Last One Standing at the beginning literally made the hair on my arms stand on end. Thanks for posting this - so cool to get a glimpse into the mind of a songwriting genius.
Thanks for posting. Neil is one of the greats over the past 20 years and it's been a pleasure to follow his great career. So many great songwriters came from the "2nd British Invasion" like the Finns, Elvis C. Tilbrook, Partridge, Sting. Many of Neil's songs are still being discovered, I hope, as they are as good as it gets.
Thank you so much for posting this. What a talented man- what a talented family! Neil rarely gets the recognition he deserves as one of the best songwriters of all time. Here in the US most people don't even know who he is and they think that Crowded House was a "one hit wonder". So sad. They don't know what they're missing.
I'm brokenhearted now, cuz Neil's been my favorite artist since ca. 1980, & I just saw the filthy cig (7:14-). The textural quality of his voice is so unique, I can't believe he would ever smoke!? A few yrs. have passed since this interview. I hope to God he quit.
what a rare, beautiful talent. hearing a simple piano version of "message to my girl", nearly broke my heart. oye, when the cigarette made it's appearance, though, my immediate reaction: "what the EFFE! someone knock that thing out of his hand NOW before he ruins that sublime voice!!" oof.
They've both written equally great songs. Neil's had more hits but it doesn't detract from the fact that they're both brilliant song writers. But when they collaborate they do occasionally transcend their individual talent.
Favourite would have to be seeing them at Splendour in the Grass a couple of years ago. It really cemented his and Tim's credability as song writers - here were thousands people who were still very young when the songs were released, yet still sang along to several hits word perfect.
Close second would be the Split Enz tour last year, madness.
I've seen Neil live many times, and every time I come away with at least one moment where I had chills running up and down my spine. His music, his lyrics, and his voice get under your skin and into your cells. He is totally amazing.
All right, let me rephrase: Paul Simon wrote all Simon & Garfunkel songs alone (save one), so this duo can hardly be counted as a "set of songwriting geniuses" (see above). Agreed?
@AndreasSimon This is great, been reading a book on the Finn bros which makes them come across a little unappealing - this reminds me of the humour of Neill Finn. Thanks for uploading.
Having seen Neil many times from the down in front of the stage (you have to get there early, but worth it), this reminds me of past shows and good times.
Hey great upload! Could you tell me where the version of Private Universe (5.30) is from? Would love to hear it all....cheers!

@drdmac You will find this version on the CD "Afterglow"; it is the acoustic version recorded at the same time as the one found on "Together Alone"

haha it's funny so many of the greatest singers have smoked, I'd love to know what difference it would have made if he never did.

What's wrong with that? It's his prerogative to do so. Yeah I agree it stinks, but I still think he's the best songwriter ever.

Neil's mother Mary once said something like this to him: "You'll always be alright, because a good tune is always in short supply."
RIP Mary Finn. What a gift she gave us with her sons.

"Time On Earth" is the best CD of 2007. You know life is good...because Crowded House is back. If only Paul was with them...
