I'm just glad to see that sci fi in general has been building up more steam than fantasy. I mean there seem to be dozens of sci fi movies and games every year, but look at fantasy, aside from harry potter and twilight fantasy has been on a slow decline
So whereas I though it was a good rant, you are setting up what I see as a fictitious (ooooh!) problem with the fantasy as a genre. I'm not even a massive fantasy buff myself, so I have no emotional interest in making you enjoy the genre. I'm just pointing out that there is a lot out there to read that could blow your mind and inspire you.
It's the same with sci-fi really...many people think all sci-fi has to be in space. I'll leave that topic alone in this comment section though.
I think you will find that 'orcs, elves, dragons', otherwise known as 'high fantasy' is only one subgenre of fantasy material. I agree with you when it comes to fantasy games in general, as they are often of the high fantasy persuasion.
However, since I enjoy reading fantasy/sci-fi, I want to let you know that the world of fantasy novels is very innovative and flexible . You just have to stay away from high fantasy if it bugs you.

I think that's likely why Square has been throwing so much sci-fi shit into their FF series for years. Started in FF6 back in '93 with the steampunk stuff, then 7 with genetic engineering/eugenics etc, then 8 with cars you can drive and all the sci-fi shit there. Even their "magic" was sci-fi based energy control. 9 was back to fantasy and so was 10-ish, but the ones after that, fucking bullet trains and Ghost in the Shell style computers and shit. It's become more of a sci-fi style series now.
Great Rant! Some Very Good Points. I can't be pissed at it too much though. Largely because it's the only bonding experience Me and My brothers had from our Dad's time growing up table top roll playing that is. Your right though something needs to give on the fantasy scene. I found your whole spiel a lot more entertaining than anything on the sci-fi channel save maybe science fiction theater 3000.
You'll get a more novel experience in books because it's a one man show. When you get a group of people together who all need to be paid salaries as they work on something, you can't be as risky. This applies to games and movies. Although it would seem that originality is appreciated and rewarded, most of these companies that produce fantasy games and movies would rather be safe and copy already successful products. This, I agree, is a curse.
It sounds like you're talking about cliche fantasy because there is a lot of novel fantasy out there if you look hard enough. Everything in the fantasy genre is going to have some similarities because that's what a genre is, but there are plenty of authors who stray from the beaten path. Try out these (especially on audiobook as the readers are top notch) - Patrick Rothfuss (if you read any of them, read this guy), Joe Abercrombie (a close second), Robin Hobb (in chron. order), George R R Martin
I mostly prefer Japanese Fantasy games. They have more personality to me. They try to do things different, and range from almost western fantasy to sci-fi.
I actually am a Fantasy fan and I agree with you. I love Tolken stuff, but everything that directly rips it off is boring as hell to me.
Diablo is really different. Theres no dragon, orcs, or elves. Its more of a Gothic fantasy, and theres not a lot like it to my knowlege. I think Diablo is the best western fantasy genre. The Warcraft games were fun, but I think WoW was the worst idea ever. They took everything they did right in the series and removed it to make it a generic Fantasy RPG
@TheWALOS Diablo is absolutely one of the only good recent Fantasy stories / games.
Personally what I hate most though, is when people lump in Sci-fi and Fantasy. It bothers me, A LOT. It also bothers me though, that a lot of "sci-fi" is actually just fantasy wrapped in a "science" skin. Fantasy + future doesn't mean science fiction... it means fantasy in the future! I'll never consider StarWars as science fiction, and "Space Opera" is not specific enough to be a genre.
@batmanrules1014 Yeah seriously that shit got old really fast! There is nothing more boring, cliche, and unoriginal than wizards and dragons! Fantasy can burn in hell for all I care
F.uck those fantasy RPG!!! 2012 games develper should create more futuristic/sci-fi RPG...thumbs up if ya agree!! -anti skyrim-

Essentially Star Wars is a fantasy westerm, set in a science fiction universe.

I agree about Diablo. It was a twist in a different direction, and I actually love Diablo II.

But ... I'm addicted to Everquest 2. I will say this much.
