I agree about how teachers are not as technology intelligent as they should be.. I had to give my teacher a lesson on how to use her new laptop! Good video but i have to say that things will change! I know more than my parents, my little 11 year old sister knows more than me, and my 3 year old niece is amazing at how she knows how to use cell phones and computers, when i was 3 I did not know how to use a computer! i did ride a 2 wheeler for the first time though.
at University over here in Munich it's all online ... communication, management and content ... professors most of the time use powerpoint ... w-lan and computeraccess everywhere ... sorry for your medival teachers ... that will change over the years ...
technology was not intended to make the population of the world dummer was it. But try find someone that knows how to bake bread from scratch, flour, yeast, water, salt. With out a breadmaker. Try giving a kid the responsability to cross the road safely with out useing the crossing lights. These things that are 'making out lives easyer' are dumming down society to the point where somthing we ddnt need before, eg breadmaker, has become a necessity. And we cant make bread with out it!!
@pheiniger I understand your point that industrialisation/technology has made us lazier and most living in developed countries have lost the original skills and knowledge that kept us alive, but funnily enough, these days you could probably just search the internet for instructions on how to bake bread, probably right here on youtube!
So the real problem is, if we lost our technology (plus all the resources to teach us these skills again) then we'd be screwed. But we'd probably still adapt...
@metallicpumpkin very true :) i like this topic cause technology affects people in so many different ways depending on which situation they are in. In the end arguments for and against cancel each other out. u can be a robotics engineer and design a factory that runs with no human presence which means the company pays less for production costs in the long run and most likely lower costs to cover mistakes previously made by workers. but then u have the other side... i was a worker in the factory.
School are there to make us educated citizens of the world.
HIGHER education is what actually prepares u for the workplace.
This makes it wrong to blame the educational system for its lack of technology in its own curriculum, as it really has no point in being there.
ANY program, ANY device, ANY piece of technology relevant today that is not absolutely self intuitive, has one if not several instructional videos online.
All that is required of us is Educational Agility, and not to be lazy.
at our school in aus, every child in my grade has a laptop, tht is throughout our state in Aus as aprt of an education revouloutiion. I find that this technology is such a distraction and won't take my cppu to school nemore b/c it hinders my work to much. I know most of my peers experience this to. Just soemthing to think about??
I am a master's student studying communications (specifically Internet Media) and this presentation blew me away! I'm so impressed with the fact that not only are these middle school students familiar with some of the web 2.0's heavy-hitters but they've incorporated them into an artful project centered around the importance of technology in the classroom.
I know this vid is two years old, but the message is just important today as it will be in years to come. Technology and social media FTW
If teachers can not keep up with Technology, what does that say about our future for the kids? Tomorrow's work force is what will keep this country afloat. When teacher's can not keep up, they need to be moved out and replaced by those who will do the job.
computer technology is good i agree, but not for teaching it distracts and im sure i would have concentrated more in school if it wasnt for the lures of the internet.
technology is just a medium for reading, and the best reading can be had in a book, i too prefer to sit in front of a bright flashing screen but books are best.
I strongly disagree with your statement about "best reading can be had in a book." Is the book not just another medium? You seem to be caught up in your own opinion and can't see the larger picture.
I am not pushing technology in the classroom when teachers don't understand it or are not ready for it. I am simply providing a glimpse of how the students feel about it and why it is important to them.
Yes, the book is just another medium. But sometimes, just sometimes, it's good to get away from the blinking monitors and such for just a little while. Technology, when used too much, can and does reduce the ability to do things for yourself.
So, even if you understand and are ready for it, some limits to technology wouldn't be a bad idea.
Technology is the new carpentry or sewing. It's just a means to an end and that end is the same as it ever was. I have never given a powerpoint presentation in my life.
Also, just because our students today are savvy with their cell phones and social media sites does NOT mean that these skills transfer to technology in the education setting. Most students are just as lost as teachers are when it comes to education technology.
reading is hardly the point. i'm using ytmnd's and embed youtube in my TOK presentation, its working great. i don't have to befriend a librarian in a another city to get a rare book.
technology is a cool guy, it eases life and doesn't afraid of anything.
Technology is much, much more than just written word. It is filled with a mass of various media to study and learn from. Not only that, as a communication tool and a means to convey information (educational or critical) technology, and more specifically the internet, has connected the entire world.
Technology can be distracting, but so can anything else if a person is not disciplined enough to stay on task.
Very profound! This was a beautiful exposition on weighing the uses and abuses of technology as well as how the the generation gaps can influence the learning methods in operation now.. well done!
This is a really great representation of what our kids have to endure in a typical classroom. I am glad you have posted this... I can use it to help encourage future teachers to learn and incorporate appropriate technology for their students.

New screens have been made (see: kindle) that don't give you irritable eyes when reading. Which means you can have a library sitting in your pocket.
