I remember my dad telling about his friends went to an island with them crawling with coconut crabs and they saw what it did to the coconuts and then it got dark outside and they had no lights and the crabs were everywhere and one of the guys tripped and fell to the ground. He was screaming at the top of his lungs imagining what they were going to do to his head if he did get up quick enough.

These are dangerous because of the name their pincers are able to rip apart coconuts and climb the trees rather than wait for the fruits to fall.

Not true that they only eat coconut. In fact they eat all kind of fruits they kind find, carrion and little animals such as frech slipt turtles. Plus it was doubted for a long time that they could open coconuts cause in some experiments the crabs starved to death with a pile of coconuts around them. But then they discovered them doing it in their natural habitat.
