I just started a few weeks ago and this is the hardest, toughest thing I ever tried. Diving for a certain distance is one thing (I once thought I was good at) but fighting for the ball, getting tackled and getting upset about it can make you use your breath within seconds... which is when you have to rush to the surface and your opponent scores a goal - D'OH!

Yes, that's really funny. First thing UWR-players will tell you when trying to recruit you is that you can't really get hurt in the water. A few days later you learn that getting out of water with some scratches is totally normal.

Weirdly, it's both true: you couldn't possibly wrestle for the ball like that with five or more players involved on land without at least a twisted ankle after 60 seconds. Under water it's not a problem. (99% of the time.)

UW rugby happens to be one of the most demanding sports in the world.

Stamina required is massive, so is the ability to read the game and act lightning-fast.

I played it for 6 years, and I can tell you that this is hard, very hard.

There was no training game where you left without bruises and bumbs.

Hard to imagine what you view as sports, if this does not fit the bill.

you only have to be fit enough to still swim (and wrestle) when your oxygen supply is low but you also need some emotional stability to keep from panicing when you're upside down under water and getting a random kick from somebody's flipper.

I suspect that one of the reasons that UWR-players are so social: you need people who won't mind occasionally getting punched, kneed or scratched.

This looks cool. What makes it different from water polo is putting the goals on the bottom of the pool. WP has a ball that floats and the goals also float, so WP is still mostly a "flat" game.

What would be even cooler would be zero gravity sports, but right now that's just too expensive.

I played a sometimes now, and its a bit freaky the first time. Its like learning some entirely new shit. first you must get used to the scuba gear, then you must improve your lungs and get used to diving, then u need to learn a technical way of not swallowing the water. Then play and have fun. Run along the water, pass to your teammates, get up get some air, back down. score goal goal goal
