@50kEm We teach that we release the ball off the first two fingers and that all fingers of the hand should "Flop Finish " with all fingers pointing toward the floor, or having an open hand with fingers to the floor.
hey coach im only 12 and i havent got the strength to shoot with the ball over my head yet what should i do to get a more accurate form than i have because shooting from my chest does not have the right arch i wish to have
@NoWallsNoBorders Shoot the ball from your shoulder height until you get a little older. Locate the ball in fron of the shooting eye and be sure to use your legs for the power base. See our video "MAKE THE 3 POINTER!!! Get Your Legs Into It!!" This will explain how you need to use the legs for the power.
@NoWallsNoBorders BTW, all shot mechanics are the same as above your head. To get better arc be sure to have the elbow finish the shot above your eye level. This should help the arc and don't forget the legs!!!!
Hey how do I prevent my elbow from flaring out during my arm stroke? When doing the form shooting drill, my elbow is in when im at my set point but it tends to flare out as my arm stroke begins. It affects my accuracy and it causes bad rotation on the ball. How should I approach fixing this?
@Blankettcape All the things that you mentioned as a part of the "Elbow Flare" is typical and does cause poor rotation and usually a flat shot. How to Fix! Find our Form Shooting Drill in our video play list and watch it several times. This drill is made just for working on shot problems in a controlled way. Only you can change this element and it has to be done with total consciousness of what you want to change until the change becomes a matter of "Muscle Memory." Start today!
@zxImSoFlyxz No, it is a practice thing. You do this over and over in the form shooting drill until it becomes a matter of "Muscle Memory." It takes a lot of focus on this element but you can do it. It may take a week or so, but once you have it, it's easy from there on.
my ankle has been acting up so i am taking 2-3 weeks off. I understand the most important part of a jumpshot is the form. can you tell me some form shooting drills that i can do at home??????. by the way. im not even able to walk to a court because my ankle is in a splint. so can you tell me some for shooting drills i can do at home???
@50kEm Sorry about the ankle. They are the worst when it comes to pain! You can use all the stroke elements that we talk about in our Form Shooting Drill. You can shoot the ball against the wall instead of a basket.
I watched the video on the form drill and I started using the drill but I still can't get my shot to release at my middle and index finger all the time. Is there any specific technique which would allow you to release the shot at both middle and index finger?
@mythbloodpk You can do this!!! You need to se our "Form Shooting Drill" to work on this or any other shooting element. First two fingers are essential!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I release the ball whit my first and second fingers as you guys say, but my coach tells me to release the ball only whit the index finger, which one is better?
@MrTautoification We definitely believe that the two finger release allows for better control of the ball on the release." This one finger release has been on the scene lately, but we consider it to be a poor element of your shot. This is pretty commonly felt that the one finger is a poor idea.
as i get older my range is starting to increase, but im noticing that my mid-range shot isnt as good as it use to be. can give give me some drills or tips/advice to me so i can get a great mid-range shot whether im wide open or being guarded? thanks
@50kEm The mid-range shots can be difficult to dial in without a lot of practice. One college coach who is really a respected coach did some analysis and determined that the mid-range shot was less effective than shooting from the 3 line. 28% versus 40%, but you should still work on this shot a lot.
@onemogain23 Use the entire range of the wrist in the follow through as this is where we finish our shot. This one most important thing to remember is that all elements of your shot can be changed, BUT you must spend the time working on the changes. We recommend that you use our video "Get Perfect Shooting Form!! Form Shooting Drill to establish the elements of your shot and create the MUSCLE MEMORY" necessary for the changes.
@BazhoFromTheHood Find a hoop and get busy using our "Get Perfect Shooting Form!! Form Shooting Drill." There has to be one somewhere near you. Go investigate and find one.
I have watched all of your videos on shooting but i have a problem. I get a decent amount of my shots in with a swish but when I shoot i feel no sensation in my first and second fingers, i also get little spin on the ball. I have watched your video on hand placement but still no good. How do i fix this? Also some times i find i don't have enough power when i try to put a big arc on my shot. Could you please help me?
@samwjheller Hey Sam, usually you have the sensation in your fingers, but some people do not. Not to worry as long as you are sure that they are the last fingers coming off the ball. How about posting a video so we can see what you are doing with your hand. It is almost impossible for us to help you here unless we can see what you are doing. Please watch our video "Make 3-Pointers!! Get Your Legs into It!!" and this will help you understand how and why to use the legs for your power.
@m3v2p We canot say why your forearm hurts when using the flop finish. You should be doing nothing more than having a very relaxed finish to the shot.
Coach, I've got this question, should I push the ball with my index finger or should it go with the other fingers. And should I push the ball with my wrist?
@xiLOLix1 Well, you have watched this video and so it explains how to use your fingers and your wrist. The ball should be released off the first and second fingers just like a baseball. The wrist is noting more than an extension of your shooting arm with the "Flop Finish."
I have tendency to release the ball with my last two fingers (Pinky and fourth), and no matter how hard i try, i can't seem to get the ball to roll off my index, how do i fix this?
@aesophegas The answer to your question is simply, PRACTICE! There are no simple, easy ways to fix our shooting problems or any problem you may have in BB. It all comes down to PRACTICE! We suggest that you review our shooting videos, especially the Flop Finish and Form Shooting Drill. The FS drill will help you get control of the shot mechanics and change what you are doing from a short distance.
@ShotScience coach why are my shots not getting in? I mean when im alone i make every shot but when im in a real game they just wont fall. I follow your footwork, and shooting drill, and shoting form but in games i cant make them in. Can it be because its Double Rim?
@bletma281 Well, it is most likely due to the fact that you are not practicing your shooting at "GAME SPEED." When we practice at a very casual speed and then have to shoot in a fast pace game we have not shot in this environment and therefore are not very accurate. "More game speed practice."
im in a small shooting slump. i watched you interactive shooting guide and i took notes on why i thought i was missing. but im just starting to shoot free throws so i can get great shooting mechanics and get out my slump. do you think shooting free throws is good for my problem? and will shooting free throws help my shooting mechanics and make my shot more consistent and accurate??
I have a problem. Well i have been practicing my shot form for a couple of months by using your videos, but i still mis every shot. evrybody tells me that my feet aren't in the right position, but then i look on the internet and find nothing. Pleas help me out.
@JmanJblack Hey Jman, take a look at our video; "Don't Square up your Feet." There is the answer. We would love to see your shot in a video so we can help you work out your problems. We will be waiting for it.
@shotsience: I was Just wondering on how to deal with Pressure In games when shooting layups and jumpers, Because when I practise Im fine but In games The pressure gets to me and my low confidence to shoot always affects my accuracy
@Ollie872 Well several things may be going on here. First, you need to practice your shooting "at game speed!" This is essential because you will be under pressure, have some fatigue an not used to shooting at the game tempo. Secondly, your lack of confidence is probably due to not shooting in game situations. You want to shoot in game like movements when you shoot to get used to the speed. As your skills improve so will your confidence.
Coach... Im addicted to your channel its only my 2nd day here on your channel.. I already had lots of adjustments to do... THANKS FOR YOUR DEDICATION IN TEACHING US! One more thing... I got my form in shooting, release and follow through... my problem is POWER... i shot airball from long range... i start my warm ups with close basket shooting then move 2-3 steps away.. mid range and finally long range... any tips on how to strengthen your shot releases?
@joneenee Yes!! It's all about using your legs and the power they have for your shot. Check out our video "Get Your Legs Into It" for a better understanding of why and how to use the legs.
i am looking for some help with my follow through...my wrist goes sideways mos of the time i try to have it go straight...but its all over the place...any idea...??
i am looking for some help with my follow through...my wrist goes sideways mos of the time i try to have it go straight...but its all over the place...any idea...??
@somda2ig Well, this is an element of your shooting that you really have to work on. It is called "Pronation" where the wrist finishes to the outside. Your wrist always wants to finish "Directly toward the hoop." We always recommend that players use our "Form Shooting Drill" to work on the elements of their shot. It is short distance and low key where you can really concentrate. The Form Shooting video.
@ShotScience when I shoot I have a funky spin. I use the flop, but after seing videos of I shooting it seems I release the ball off the wrong fingers not the middle and index. Is their anything I can do to fix this. any tips or suggestions
@kobe24bryant81points It is best to release the ball of the index and second fingers for the best control on your release. To change what you may be doing is nothing more than a ton of practice. We recommend our "Form Shooting Drill Video" to help you make the changes.
@GuNNaGeTeM Simply work on your ball control. We have students who are 10-11 yrs. old and they are able to learn to control the ball. Actually when you spread your thumb to elevate the ball off your palm this gives you better control.
@ShotScience How could I work on my ball control? And also I don't know if you have some big 10 and 11 year olds but i'm 16 years old and only 5"4. My hand width is only 3 1/3 in and length 7 1/2 in.
@GuNNaGeTeM well no matter what size your hands are you can develop good handles through working on your game. Spend at least 20-30 minutes a day on ball handling drills and it will come around for you.
Did I understand right, that when I got the ball in the set point and my hand begins the extention, my wrist and fingers are still being relaxed.I only elevate my elbow and snap my wrist just automaticly, because the shooting hand extends?
@TheBkiller12 The relaxation of the wrist occurs when you are finishing with your shooting wrist. The wrist is what is to be relaxed. "NO WRIST SNAPPING!" This imparts too much spin or rotation on the ball. We want a ball that makes 11/2 - 2 rotations before it gets to the basket from 15'. This keeps the ball soft on the rim.
@ImaPlaya18 You want it to be smooooth and silky and not herky jerky! If you try to speed up the stroke it will probably lose accuracy. To get your shot off quicker work on some of the mechanics and load your legs before you catch the ball or come out of the dribble.
Coach i understand the "flop finish" but I can only do it if my follow through is slow-normal speed. When I have a quick follow through, my wrist and hand tends to stiffen up and it's a lot harder to keep relaxed. By the way how fast should a follow through be?
@ImaPlaya18 It usually takes a few weeks of practice on the flop to get it down. The flop is not a fast finish at all. It is merely very relaxed so that we do not impart too much rotation on the ball.
@ImaPlaya18 That's it!! Total relaxation of the wrist on your follow through. Makes for a soft shot if it hits the rim. Soft on the rim often translates into a make!
Coach my hand bounces a couple of times after my release when my wrist is relaxed. Is that supposed to happen? When I watch your students, I noticed their hands don't bounce around like mine.
@AznJohnyBoy Bouncing is good. That indicates that your wrist is very relaxed. Everyone who shoots with the "Flop" has different levels of relaxation. Yours must be awesome.
Hey Coach, My name is Tommy and i have a problem, where when I follow through I find that my wrist points either left or right. I don't know why this is...any ideas?
@XxS0uThxP4WxX It points in these directions out of habit. Now it's time to change this habit for more accuracy. The fingers need to make their follow through "directly to the center of "The Nest." Turning your wrist in our out draws the ball in that direction. These follow throughs can be changed by using our video "Form Shooting Drill" where you really focus ion this shooting element as well as others. Let's start today!!
Coach, i need help. I used to snap my wrist but then i tried relaxing it. It felt natural and it felt like i was just "dropping" it into the basket and almost all of my shots from the Form Shooting Drill were a swish. Then I took a break ran through ball handling drills and when i went back to the form shooting drill i just lost that feeling. I cant get it back and its been 2 days :/ Im pretty sure my wrist is still relaxed, my hand bounces a couple times like before but it doesnt feel right.
@TheBboyPhresh this is a pretty common experience. Just stay with it because the "Flop" usually takes several weeks to get it down where is is effective. The "Form Shooting Drill" is key here. Anytime we make changes to what we do it takes time and patience to achieve it. It will come and your shot should become much more efective with fewer long rebounds. Make sure to include the other shot elements when working on your shot, like arc, etc.
@pixy4life Pixy, it may look like he is palming it, however, he has the ball on his finger pads. He learned to shoot the ball like this when he was 6 or 7. Can he shoot it or not? He always amazes me with his quick release and range.
I reviewed this video and started shooting with a flop....only to get the same result...I get a shot with waaayyy too much spin. How do i correct this?
@Exia123456789: If you have the wrist "RELAXED" the rotation should slow way down and not speed up. If you are getting too much rotation you are snapping the wrist at the finish.
my distance shot is fine but it just seems like i dont release the ball off my index and middle finger. it feels like it slips and i dont have control on the ball
@50kEm: What is a typical problem here is that you probably need to spread the thumb to raise the ball off your palm and it also gives you a grip on the ball with your thumb and little finger. Not releasing off the first and second fingers means that ir must come off the last three fingers. Typical here is that your elbow is either out too far or is flaring out as you shoot the ball. Check these things out and let us know how it's going.
when i release the ball from close/ mid-range i have control of the ball but when i shoot from distance it feels like a lose control of the ball and i miss. i do shoot the ball with my index and middle finger. do you have any tips so that ill have more control of the ball from longer distances??
@50kEm: Well 50k, you may want to spread the thumb of the shooting fingers because this will allow a grip on the ball between the thumb and the little finger. How is your longer shot? Is it under-powered? One problem that occurs is that we tend to push the longer shots rather than lift them. This may make the control of the ball a problem. Let us know.
I know that shooting the ball with backspin is important, as it decelerates the ball when it hits the backboard or rim. However, I've noticed my own shot has a lot of spin and too much. I've watched other videos saying that most players get only about 2 revolutions per second, whereas I get far more. So what I'm asking is, how can I get that optimal and perfect spin on the ball?
@Exia123456789: Start with reviewing this video. The idea is when we "Flop Finish" with the wrist it is a very relaxed finish and it imparts less rotation on the ball. When we snap our wrist the ball will spin faster and therefore have too much energy wrapped up in the rotation. When it hits the iron it will result in a long rebound. A slower rotation will have less energy and therefor stay around the basket and even a possible make. Fast rotation usually results in a long rebound. Soft!
@onemogain23 it's all one fluid motion. Your arm extends upwards and you release the ball as you reach the top of your jump. Watch our other shooting videos and you'll see what we mean!
@theLALfan24: The fingers need to finish with the fingers and the thumb pointed toward the floor and bent at the wrist. Any change you make to your shot is going to feel very uncomfortable for a while. Not to worry as It should get better. It may take you a little while to get the "Wrist Flop" working, but it is a key element.
i am starting to release the basll off my index and middle. i notice that my shooting is OFF. it is brutal. should i stick with it?. and how long will it take to adjust to it?
@50kEm: Stick with it!!!!! It usually takes a few days to a week to get this down. It may even go into two weeks, but your will really like the result. Shoot every day 3-500 shots and be sure to use the "Form Shooting Drill" to work on it.
@ARCHYNAP: For us at Shot Science we fully believe that the ball needs to be delivered off the the first and second fingers. We believe that shooting the basketball is much like throwing a baseball or a football. The first two fingers allows for much better control of where the ball needs to go.
@Kd4Master: Yep, that's it!!! When you finish the flop all finger should be extended toward the floor with the ball last released off the first and second fingers.
hi coach, when i first playing basketball i shoot with all five fingers bend down. after i see how ray allen and other great players shoot a ball, including slow motion videos, i tried to shoot like them, none of the fingers are bend, like the flop finish.but since then i ve been struggling for more than 2 years coz i can hardly control the ball to let it roll off the index finger, when it doesnt, the ball go way shot and really hurt my confidence..it doesnt improve even i shoot 5 hours a week=((
@timothy1949: Timothy, you have to get us a video of your shot. It will help you to see it as well, because we never are able to see ourselves shoo the ball. We are waiting!!!!
Hello to the ShotScience crew. My shooting form, relying on the wrist strength, is one that seeks the highest possible release point, which means that my release happens while my arms are nearly pointing directly towards the sky, not on a diagonal line towards the hoop. Would it make sense to simply work on my wrist strength and endurance to avoid weakening, since I've been using this for years, or would you recommend I drill myself to a lower release to expend less energy on the wrist snap?
@ConcaCon: Well interestingly, you can get too much arc. The best arc is achieved by merely allowing the shooting elbow reach a height higher than you eye level. The power that you generate for your shot should be the result of using the legs. These muscles, the glutes, quads, hammies and calves are the largest and most powerful muscles in your body. When yo learn to connect this power to your shot it should become "EFFORTLESS" in your delivery. The wrist is not a good power source.
That makes a lot of sense. The bigger the muscle, the larger the potential power derived from it. In that case, seeing as I have pretty strong legs, it would make sense if instead I trained my leg muscles more and tried to incorporate them more into my shot motion. I will try that out, along with watching my elbow-eye connection. Thank you for the advice.
These last shootarounds and pickup games, I've used my legs a lot more on my shot. I like to raise my heels before shooting, jumping off the ball of the foot. I fade backwards just a bit while jumping as I feel quite comfortable with it. The whole shot does feel effortless and doesn't tire me. Weird enough, I even get more friendly bounces than before. During shootaround, over 60 % fell in from 12-15 feet and with enough reps it'll keep improving. Thanks a lot for your advice.
@ConcaCon well, you want to try and NOT fade when you shoot. The best thing you can do is to jump straight up and land in essentially the same spot you took off from. If you're moving directionally when you shoot, you are adding in another parameter that can go wrong with your shot. When you jump straight up and down, you are shooting a MUCH less complicated shot, which is what you want!!
@ShotScience: I land pretty much on the same spot, it is more that my legs fall a bit forward and my back reclines a bit allowing additional space when contested. My best shots are in motion so I incorporated the fadeaway element into my form. Vince Carter used a similar form. Even when shooting from a spot, he turned his back backwards a bit and let his feet fall forward at the point of release and still landed on the spot he jumped from. Of course you're right about staying straight.
@Noobykins: O.K., the first problem is you need to decide whom you want to listen to for your stroke information. We used to work with that guy, but there were real diferences in what we believe and what he believes. We certainly believe that the ball should be released off the first and second fingers just like throwing a baseball or a football. When finishing off these two fingers you should feel that release for a moment using the Flop Finish, or being really relaxed. Who do you believe?
@iJeSuSxX: Yes there are tips in our videos that will help you with the follow through. Check out our library on our YT channel. If it is still unclear get back to us.
Love your videos, they really help. Okay, you may have touched on this in one of your videos but I have a question. For a while now I have been shooting the ball and flinging it over the top of my head (not knowing until someone pointed it out and I recorded my shot and sure enough, he was right). So my question is, how can I stop shooting it over the top of my head. A big issue was that my hand was in line with my arm not bend to hold the ball so I had to get power by flinging it over my head.
@JustCallMeHonda: This is such a common problem!!! The only way to break this is to focus on this element using our Form Shooting Drill and getting the ball up in front of and above our shooting eye. Imagine that there is a pane of glass in front of you and your nose, chin and belly button are touching the glass. When you go to your Set Point NO PART OF THE BALL can be touching the glass or going beyond it. This keeps the ball in the"L" position..You will not fling it when you do this!!!
i have a question that has been bugging me. i was told to flick your wrist hard on your shot. alot of people tell me shooting is all in the wrist, so i tend to try and flick my wrist hard. so am i supposed to flick my wrist with force? or just let it "flop" over with no force?
@mattjr3; Well, you can do either way, however, it is our belief that the harder you snap the wrist the more rotation you put on the ball. The more rotation on the ball the more energy that is wrapped up in the ball. When the ball hits the rim it expends this energy and a long rebound usually results. The softer "Flop" finish allows the ball to spin much slower and thereby have less energy making for soft rebounds that tend to stay around the basket and possibly fall in. Your choice!

Hey Coach,
I have watched all of your videos on shooting but i have a problem. Could you please help me?
samwjheller 3 months ago
@samwjheller Hey Sam, usually you have the sensation in your fingers, but some people do not. Not to worry as long as you are sure that they are the last fingers coming off the ball. How about posting a video so we can see what you are doing with your hand. It is almost impossible for us to help you here unless we can see what you are doing. Please watch our video "Make 3-Pointers!! Get Your Legs into It!!" and this will help you understand how and why to use the legs for your power.

my forearm will start to hurt 4 some reason when i use the flop. Am i doing it wrong because it wouldn't usually happen b4?
m3v2p 4 months ago
@m3v2p We canot say why your forearm hurts when using the flop finish. You should be doing nothing more than having a very relaxed finish to the shot.
ShotScience 4 months ago
Coach, I've got this question, should I push the ball with my index finger or should it go with the other fingers. And should I push the ball with my wrist?
xiLOLix1 4 months ago
@xiLOLix1 Well, you have watched this video and so it explains how to use your fingers and your wrist. The ball should be released off the first and second fingers just like a baseball. The wrist is noting more than an extension of your shooting arm with the "Flop Finish."
ShotScience 4 months ago
Hey Coach,
I have tendency to release the ball with my last two fingers (Pinky and fourth), and no matter how hard i try, i can't seem to get the ball to roll off my index, how do i fix this?
aesophegas 4 months ago
@aesophegas The answer to your question is simply, PRACTICE! There are no simple, easy ways to fix our shooting problems or any problem you may have in BB. It all comes down to PRACTICE! We suggest that you review our shooting videos, especially the Flop Finish and Form Shooting Drill. The FS drill will help you get control of the shot mechanics and change what you are doing from a short distance.
ShotScience 4 months ago
should your hand really bounce up and down?
m3v2p 4 months ago
@m3v2p The hand does not need to bounce up and down, just be very relaxed on the wrist finish. This imp[arts a very slow rotation on the ball.
ShotScience 4 months ago
Coach should i flick my wrist when shooting
bletma281 5 months ago
@bletma281 It is more of a "Flop" than a flick. We want to keep the rotation to a minimum.
ShotScience 5 months ago
@ShotScience coach why are my shots not getting in? I mean when im alone i make every shot but when im in a real game they just wont fall. I follow your footwork, and shooting drill, and shoting form but in games i cant make them in. Can it be because its Double Rim?
bletma281 5 months ago
@bletma281 Well, it is most likely due to the fact that you are not practicing your shooting at "GAME SPEED." When we practice at a very casual speed and then have to shoot in a fast pace game we have not shot in this environment and therefore are not very accurate. "More game speed practice."
ShotScience 5 months ago
Hey coach,
im in a small shooting slump. i watched you interactive shooting guide and i took notes on why i thought i was missing. but im just starting to shoot free throws so i can get great shooting mechanics and get out my slump. do you think shooting free throws is good for my problem? and will shooting free throws help my shooting mechanics and make my shot more consistent and accurate??

@shotsience: I was Just wondering on how to deal with Pressure In games when shooting layups and jumpers, Because when I practise Im fine but In games The pressure gets to me and my low confidence to shoot always affects my accuracy
Ollie872 5 months ago
@Ollie872 Well several things may be going on here. First, you need to practice your shooting "at game speed!" This is essential because you will be under pressure, have some fatigue an not used to shooting at the game tempo. Secondly, your lack of confidence is probably due to not shooting in game situations. You want to shoot in game like movements when you shoot to get used to the speed. As your skills improve so will your confidence.

i am looking for some help with my follow through...my wrist goes sideways mos of the time i try to have it go straight...but its all over the place...any idea...??
somda2ig 6 months ago
@somda2ig Well, this is an element of your shooting that you really have to work on. It is called "Pronation" where the wrist finishes to the outside. Your wrist always wants to finish "Directly toward the hoop." We always recommend that players use our "Form Shooting Drill" to work on the elements of their shot. It is short distance and low key where you can really concentrate. The Form Shooting video.

@ShotScience when I shoot I have a funky spin. I use the flop, but after seing videos of I shooting it seems I release the ball off the wrong fingers not the middle and index. Is their anything I can do to fix this. any tips or suggestions
kobe24bryant81points 7 months ago
@kobe24bryant81points It is best to release the ball of the index and second fingers for the best control on your release. To change what you may be doing is nothing more than a ton of practice. We recommend our "Form Shooting Drill Video" to help you make the changes.
ShotScience 7 months ago
What should you do if you have little hands like me? It makes it harder to control the basketball with the tips of your fingers.
GuNNaGeTeM 7 months ago
@GuNNaGeTeM Simply work on your ball control. We have students who are 10-11 yrs. old and they are able to learn to control the ball. Actually when you spread your thumb to elevate the ball off your palm this gives you better control.
ShotScience 7 months ago
@ShotScience How could I work on my ball control? And also I don't know if you have some big 10 and 11 year olds but i'm 16 years old and only 5"4. My hand width is only 3 1/3 in and length 7 1/2 in.
GuNNaGeTeM 7 months ago
@GuNNaGeTeM well no matter what size your hands are you can develop good handles through working on your game. Spend at least 20-30 minutes a day on ball handling drills and it will come around for you.

Hey, Coach!
Could your explain The Flop finish more detaily?
Did I understand right, that when I got the ball in the set point and my hand begins the extention, my wrist and fingers are still being relaxed.I only elevate my elbow and snap my wrist just automaticly, because the shooting hand extends?
TheBkiller12 7 months ago
@TheBkiller12 The relaxation of the wrist occurs when you are finishing with your shooting wrist. The wrist is what is to be relaxed. "NO WRIST SNAPPING!" This imparts too much spin or rotation on the ball. We want a ball that makes 11/2 - 2 rotations before it gets to the basket from 15'. This keeps the ball soft on the rim.
ShotScience 7 months ago
So how fast should your shooting stroke be?
ImaPlaya18 7 months ago
@ImaPlaya18 You want it to be smooooth and silky and not herky jerky! If you try to speed up the stroke it will probably lose accuracy. To get your shot off quicker work on some of the mechanics and load your legs before you catch the ball or come out of the dribble.
ShotScience 7 months ago

ImaPlaya18 7 months ago
Coach i understand the "flop finish" but I can only do it if my follow through is slow-normal speed. When I have a quick follow through, my wrist and hand tends to stiffen up and it's a lot harder to keep relaxed. By the way how fast should a follow through be?
ImaPlaya18 7 months ago
@ImaPlaya18 It usually takes a few weeks of practice on the flop to get it down. The flop is not a fast finish at all. It is merely very relaxed so that we do not impart too much rotation on the ball.
ShotScience 7 months ago
Is this an example of the "Flop" finish? watch?v=HOXz9QBV2iI
Just a video of Ray Allen explaining how he shoots :)
ImaPlaya18 7 months ago
@ImaPlaya18 That's it!! Total relaxation of the wrist on your follow through. Makes for a soft shot if it hits the rim. Soft on the rim often translates into a make!
ShotScience 7 months ago
Coach my hand bounces a couple of times after my release when my wrist is relaxed. Is that supposed to happen? When I watch your students, I noticed their hands don't bounce around like mine.
AznJohnyBoy 7 months ago
@AznJohnyBoy Bouncing is good. That indicates that your wrist is very relaxed. Everyone who shoots with the "Flop" has different levels of relaxation. Yours must be awesome.
ShotScience 7 months ago
Hey Coach, My name is Tommy and i have a problem, where when I follow through I find that my wrist points either left or right. I don't know why this is...any ideas?
XxS0uThxP4WxX 7 months ago

TheBboyPhresh 7 months ago
@TheBboyPhresh this is a pretty common experience. Just stay with it because the "Flop" usually takes several weeks to get it down where is is effective. The "Form Shooting Drill" is key here. Anytime we make changes to what we do it takes time and patience to achieve it. It will come and your shot should become much more efective with fewer long rebounds. Make sure to include the other shot elements when working on your shot, like arc, etc.

Exia123456789 8 months ago in playlist Shot Science For help!
@Exia123456789: If you have the wrist "RELAXED" the rotation should slow way down and not speed up. If you are getting too much rotation you are snapping the wrist at the finish.
ShotScience 8 months ago
Hey coach,
my distance shot is fine but it just seems like i dont release the ball off my index and middle finger. it feels like it slips and i dont have control on the ball
50kEm 8 months ago
@50kEm: What is a typical problem here is that you probably need to spread the thumb to raise the ball off your palm and it also gives you a grip on the ball with your thumb and little finger. Not releasing off the first and second fingers means that ir must come off the last three fingers. Typical here is that your elbow is either out too far or is flaring out as you shoot the ball. Check these things out and let us know how it's going.
ShotScience 8 months ago
Hey coach,
when i release the ball from close/ mid-range i have control of the ball but when i shoot from distance it feels like a lose control of the ball and i miss. i do shoot the ball with my index and middle finger. do you have any tips so that ill have more control of the ball from longer distances??
50kEm 8 months ago
@50kEm: Well 50k, you may want to spread the thumb of the shooting fingers because this will allow a grip on the ball between the thumb and the little finger. How is your longer shot? Is it under-powered? One problem that occurs is that we tend to push the longer shots rather than lift them. This may make the control of the ball a problem. Let us know.
ShotScience 8 months ago
I know that shooting the ball with backspin is important, as it decelerates the ball when it hits the backboard or rim. However, I've noticed my own shot has a lot of spin and too much. I've watched other videos saying that most players get only about 2 revolutions per second, whereas I get far more. So what I'm asking is, how can I get that optimal and perfect spin on the ball?
Exia123456789 8 months ago
@Exia123456789: Start with reviewing this video. The idea is when we "Flop Finish" with the wrist it is a very relaxed finish and it imparts less rotation on the ball. When we snap our wrist the ball will spin faster and therefore have too much energy wrapped up in the rotation. When it hits the iron it will result in a long rebound. A slower rotation will have less energy and therefor stay around the basket and even a possible make. Fast rotation usually results in a long rebound. Soft!
ShotScience 8 months ago
when you shoot do u flick ur wrist to make ur arm straight or do you move ur arm and then flick your wrist?
onemogain23 8 months ago
@onemogain23 it's all one fluid motion. Your arm extends upwards and you release the ball as you reach the top of your jump. Watch our other shooting videos and you'll see what we mean!
ShotScience 8 months ago
my fingers close and go into each other after i shoot sometimes.is it something that affects the shot because it doesn't feel comfortable to me
theLALfan24 8 months ago
@theLALfan24: The fingers need to finish with the fingers and the thumb pointed toward the floor and bent at the wrist. Any change you make to your shot is going to feel very uncomfortable for a while. Not to worry as It should get better. It may take you a little while to get the "Wrist Flop" working, but it is a key element.

ARCHYNAP 8 months ago
@ARCHYNAP: For us at Shot Science we fully believe that the ball needs to be delivered off the the first and second fingers. We believe that shooting the basketball is much like throwing a baseball or a football. The first two fingers allows for much better control of where the ball needs to go.

ShotScience 8 months ago
Hello to the ShotScience crew. My shooting form, relying on the wrist strength, is one that seeks the highest possible release point, which means that my release happens while my arms are nearly pointing directly towards the sky, not on a diagonal line towards the hoop. Would it make sense to simply work on my wrist strength and endurance to avoid weakening, since I've been using this for years, or would you recommend I drill myself to a lower release to expend less energy on the wrist snap?
ConcaCon 9 months ago
@ConcaCon: Well interestingly, you can get too much arc. The best arc is achieved by merely allowing the shooting elbow reach a height higher than you eye level. The power that you generate for your shot should be the result of using the legs. These muscles, the glutes, quads, hammies and calves are the largest and most powerful muscles in your body. When yo learn to connect this power to your shot it should become "EFFORTLESS" in your delivery. The wrist is not a good power source.
ShotScience 9 months ago
@ShotScience
ConcaCon 9 months ago
@ConcaCon: Glad we could help out. Keep us up to date on your progress.
ShotScience 9 months ago
@ShotScience
ConcaCon 8 months ago
@ConcaCon well, you want to try and NOT fade when you shoot. The best thing you can do is to jump straight up and land in essentially the same spot you took off from. If you're moving directionally when you shoot, you are adding in another parameter that can go wrong with your shot. When you jump straight up and down, you are shooting a MUCH less complicated shot, which is what you want!!
ShotScience 8 months ago
@ShotScience: I land pretty much on the same spot, it is more that my legs fall a bit forward and my back reclines a bit allowing additional space when contested. My best shots are in motion so I incorporated the fadeaway element into my form. Vince Carter used a similar form. Even when shooting from a spot, he turned his back backwards a bit and let his feet fall forward at the point of release and still landed on the spot he jumped from. Of course you're right about staying straight.

@ConcaCon: It sounds like you are working it out for yourself. Keep us up to date.

Hey coach,
how do I use my index and middle finger to touch the ball last,
and what do you mean by sensation, because the only way I can get a feeling is by flicking with the index and middle finger which I was told not to do
(Swish Shooting Method by Tom Nordland)
Noobykins 9 months ago
@Noobykins: O.K., the first problem is you need to decide whom you want to listen to for your stroke information. We used to work with that guy, but there were real diferences in what we believe and what he believes. We certainly believe that the ball should be released off the first and second fingers just like throwing a baseball or a football. When finishing off these two fingers you should feel that release for a moment using the Flop Finish, or being really relaxed. Who do you believe?
ShotScience 9 months ago
@ShotScience How do I know if im shooting with my middle and index? Do they have to flick down?
Noobykins 9 months ago
@Noobykins: Yes, they do. We refer to this as the five-down finish. All five fingers finish pointing toward the floor.
ShotScience 9 months ago
@iJeSuSxX: Yes there are tips in our videos that will help you with the follow through. Check out our library on our YT channel. If it is still unclear get back to us.
ShotScience 9 months ago
Love your videos, they really help. Okay, you may have touched on this in one of your videos but I have a question. For a while now I have been shooting the ball and flinging it over the top of my head (not knowing until someone pointed it out and I recorded my shot and sure enough, he was right). So my question is, how can I stop shooting it over the top of my head. A big issue was that my hand was in line with my arm not bend to hold the ball so I had to get power by flinging it over my head.
JustCallMeHonda 9 months ago
@JustCallMeHonda: This is such a common problem!!! The only way to break this is to focus on this element using our Form Shooting Drill and getting the ball up in front of and above our shooting eye. Imagine that there is a pane of glass in front of you and your nose, chin and belly button are touching the glass. When you go to your Set Point NO PART OF THE BALL can be touching the glass or going beyond it. This keeps the ball in the"L" position..You will not fling it when you do this!!!
ShotScience 9 months ago
i have a question that has been bugging me. i was told to flick your wrist hard on your shot. alot of people tell me shooting is all in the wrist, so i tend to try and flick my wrist hard. so am i supposed to flick my wrist with force? or just let it "flop" over with no force?
great videos hope you get back to me!
mattjr3 9 months ago
@mattjr3; Well, you can do either way, however, it is our belief that the harder you snap the wrist the more rotation you put on the ball. The more rotation on the ball the more energy that is wrapped up in the ball. When the ball hits the rim it expends this energy and a long rebound usually results. The softer "Flop" finish allows the ball to spin much slower and thereby have less energy making for soft rebounds that tend to stay around the basket and possibly fall in. Your choice!
