  • Very engaging tester... Good job man. Of course I'm probably pretty bias considering that after a few days of intense searching, I think I have settled on this camera :) For the price I just can't find any camera that seems to have better looking output. Also, as far as I can tell (please correct me if I'm wrong), I can buy a 32G 30mb/sec SD card that will capture 3 hours of 1080p HD footage on this cams highest quality setting for just $200. Is this true?

  • The exposure looks great

  • @BBrtqB The size and number and physical size of sensors are a huge factor in cost and performance. Good cameras have 3 sensors, one for each primary color (RGB). They also have more secure audio inputs, more manual control, more advanced settings, function buttons instead of digging through layers of menus, and larger lenses to take in more light. You're right about many new small camcorders being better than older MiniDV cameras. Compare the Canon FS H100 to the Panasonic Ag-DVC7.

  • Wow. This footage is just incredible

  • Hey bud. How did u make the effect at 0:32?

  • what did you do to get the film look...

  • @lvlik9 me?

  • hmc150 or the jvc gy-hm100u...what do you guys think....

  • @lvlik9 easy HMC 150 best cam out there at this time for what your looking for

  • Does it shoot in SD format too?

  • yes but why shoot in sd when you can shoot in 24p 1080

  • @FilghiProductions Exactly! lol

  • yes I got the hmc 150 now.. What should I do for that dept of feeld look? I still need to get more memory cards and a 4hr long batery... and yes I am shooting at hd 24p 1080.... lol sd mode

  • @FilghiProductions

Because the wedding company I work request that some of them are shot in SD. people don't want 24p for weddings.

  • @enjoyhappytimes Do they even know what 24p is. I doubt average joe walmart knows.

  • why would you both with SD just use normal cam

  • Nice footage, thanks for sharing. I'm about to purchase this camera and I got two questions about the editing process:

1-using FCP, can you easily edit 1080/24p and 720/60p on the same timeline, or at least 720/24p & 60p? It seems like it's what you did with your video...?

2-I've heard Panasonic offers free transcoding software to convert AVCHD to DVCPRO HD in order to make the edit easier (no jerkness while scrubbing) Did you try this?

Your help would definitely be a plus, thanks a lot!

  • Well, I think I've found the answer to my first question: using cinema tools to conform 60p into 24p. Anyway, I'm curious, what mac configuration do you have? Did you encounter any problem? (I've not heard only good things about editing AVCHD, that's why I ask)

  • I have a Mac Pro Quad with GeForce 8800 GT and 4 GB of Ram. It works fine for me just using "log and transfer" to bring in the footage (encodes to Apple ProRes which edits easily, at least in FCP6), and then I also use cinema tools to conform the 60fps footage to 23.976. The only weird thing I have happen has to do with gamma and some kind of incompatibility with FCP6 and Snow Leopard.

  • Great Footage. I'm curious, does anybody know home come the footage seems to chop up during the blind fold scene around minute 1:12. I've seen many cameras do that so i don't know which one to buy. does it have to do with shooting progressive/interlace or they way it's encoded? Any help would be great.

  • most likely your video card, there's a process known as vertical sync which the videocard will wait until the entire image is rendered before displaying it. YouTube doesn't seem to use this feature or whatever and sometimes only part of the image is displayed as its still rendering the rest. it all has to do with the refresh rate of your monitor (most likely 60Hz) and your video cards ability to sync with that refresh rate.

  • on all the test footage with this camera, even in HD, the video is still kinda blurry and this camera just doesnt seem like it has STUNNING image quality.

  • ever hear of MANUAL FOCAS?...

  • what is this song called?

  • hey buddy, does your editor support the file formats the camera records in?

i bought this camera right, i finally did some shooting, but the camera recorded in other non normal file formats, now i am suppose to download a converter so ican edit ?

what did you use to edit, and did you need to convert any file formats??

  • how did you do the hallway thing??? thats sooo sick

  • Wow. Puts my DVX to shame! AND RECORDS TO SD CARDS!!?? Importing my footage would LITERALLY be a process of dragging and dropping. Ugghh. Well maybe a few more years and I can afford this puppy.

  • So, does the camera have interchangeable lenses? If not, what the heck do you do??? It's hard to get a straight answer out of anyone online!

  • Can I use Windows Movie Maker for importing?

  • If you're going to buy an expensive camera why use windows movie maker? It's like the ultimate suck of video editing. I highly recommend getting Adobe Premiere if you're using a PC. That being said you can probably use WMM if you use 3rd party importing software.

  • hey i plan on getting this camera within this year, i dont have a mac and dont want to spend $800 on final cut would pinnacle 12 be good enough for this or sony vegas? footage looks amazing by the way

  • @deshirolla1 I've heard about some people using those pieces of software sucessfully but can't say for certain because I don't use either of those.

  • @deshirolla1

try the free download of corel video studio pro x2 from the corel site, if your computer has the grunt (quad core & plenty of ram 8gb) it is a stable platform to edit with and rarely crashes, the title options are limited but overall for the money it is good, just remember to save when you are editing. I have also used the latest pinnacle studio 14 ultimate but it is slow and crashes .

I have had an hmc 150 for the last year and still fall back to the corel for editing

  • @deshirolla1 actually vegas is really good! i use it on PC platform & premiere pro on Mac

  • great video,

did you use any lens adapters or is this just the stock camera?

  • its just the stock camera.

  • First of all this is amazing. Second how did you get the footage to look like red one footage off this camera? Is it because it's shot in HD at 24fps? Also can you edit the footage from this camera on Final Cut?

  • the shallow Depth of field gives it the "film-like' look. You can get that by leaving the iris wide open and zooming in. Although real 35mm cameras naturally have a shallow depth, you can short of fake it or force it with the HMC150

  • OK! I have this camera but the 24p looks fake! whats going on! why yours looks so film like!??

My video looks like its strobing with double images.. blur.. I hate fake 24p

Can you explain what did you do to the camera, are u' using a lotus, etc..

I have tried all the 24p setting 1080/24p 720/24p.. Just does not look like your video..!! Maybe is the software I'm using that it is introducing blur.. when its panning or when something moves..

  • What software are you using, I ingested all the footage through FCP6 using its "Log and Transfer." With this camera you have to have pretty current software for everything to work right, Either FCP6 or 7 or Premiere CS4. ALthough I haven't used it I believe Panasonic makes a standalone software for viewing the raw footage. Hope that helps

  • I knew it! You don't have Vegas Video..!

I got the problem under control now! I can't shoot 720p/24p because vegas video only has 720p/25p LOL

What I did was rendered the video to 1080p/24p (23.976 3-2 pulldown) Flawless frames now. No echo image when panning or going up and down..

So I'm shooting at 1080p/24fps to edit in Vegas Video 9

  • raw footage use vlc

  • He shot in 60p for the 24p timeline, which slows it down real smooth. Says so in the video, if I'm not mistaken.

  • Looks awesome! What's happening during the hallway shot (28 seconds in)? Is that just yt crapping it up, or is that cmos artefacts or something?

  • OMG! The shot starting at 0:14 is AMAZING!!!

  • LOVE this freaking camera. Love Ben Gibbard. I vote this the best video on youtube. end of discussion.

  • agreed

  • does it have threads for a lens? like a wide angle or fisheye?

  • yes, I used a UV filter and warming filter for some of this video in fact

  • instead of using a warming filter, you could just wb off a light blue

  • I did both actually, but yes that works too

  • oh cool

i forgot, does the hmc has wb shift?

  • not that I know of, but it might be in the new firmware, I haven't installed it yet

  • Nice video I loved it. This is one of my favorite cameras. I trying save up enough money to get. And what was the song by the way.

  • Wow I love the footage this thing provides :) have to buy one now

  • Does the HMC150 have instant AF?

  • yes but the MF is always better

  • sometimes it jerks along, was that a wanted effect or maybe my internet connection? then, how long did it take you to upload it?

  • I wanted to ask, what program do you use to edit the .mts files produced by the HMC-150? And is it an easy program to use? I wondering if my computer will be able to handle the editing of these high quality images.

  • Final Cut, it doesn't edit natively but FCP6 has "log and transfer" which encodes the video to Apple ProRes and is an easier codec to handle. I've heard you need a pretty powerful machine to edit AVCHD natively

  • nice footage. if i get this camera i'll definitely be slowing down that 720p a lot. any experience with 1080 recorded @ 60i then slowed down to 24p?

  • Not much, I'm not super familiar with interlaced video, but from what I know the image is composed in two scans, so if you slow a 1080i60 down to 30 or 24, you lose about half of your resolution. I could be wrong though, anyone else know?

  • Video looks fantastic. I know you

capture Prores and then after editing, do you

convert back to H.264 for delivery? Is that right, or what format did you send to youtube?

Do you notice and changes from the original video through this work flow and several conversions?

  • Yes I do encode back to H.264 @ 1280x720 for YouTube. I think I encode the video back to 3 mbps which isn't very high but YouTube lowers even more and the h264 codec can handle it fine. I don't personally like how much compression YouTube puts on it but what can you do? It looks to any keen eye phenomenally better at 1080p with less compression.

  • song?

  • Coney Island, by Death Cab for Cutie

  • how does SD card compare to P2? What am I missing out if I buy this camera? Better picture quality?

  • Advantages of P2 - allows for up to 100 mbps when recording while SD allows for about 24 mbps. On a still frame you might see less compression on P2 basically. Disadvantages of P2 - 16GB P2 card is about $750+ and records about 20 min of video, while 16 GB SDHC card is about $30 and records 100 min. both are rewritable. Also HVX170 costs about $1000 more than HMC150.

  • How would this compare to some of the higher end sony's? From what Ive seen it looks a little superior to its fellow sony's.

  • It depends on your budget. I like this camera cause out of the box comes a complete camera that works. Obviously Panasonic and Sony have they're differences but I love the layout on this camera. It only took me about an afternoon to figure out almost all the things this camera does. it's downfall is that it doesn't have interchangeable lenses. But if your looking for a camera that does that you'll expect to pay at least twice as much just for the camera and then lenses on top of that.

  • That's pretty sick, dude.

  • How easy is it to edit avchd from this camera? what editing software was used?

  • Really easy, you can read up in the description if you want but I used FCP to pull all the footage in through "Log and Transfer" which took a matter of minutes, it'd take more time if you wanted to name each clip but still tremendously faster that DV. It encodes clips to Apple ProRes for use with almost any piece of software. The one thing is you have to have the latest version of whatever software your using to import avccam. Either FCP6 or Premiere CS4 if you use Adobe.

  • One thing to keep in mind, ProRes is great, but you're transcoding the footage to a much easier to edit version. If you want to edit AVCHD natively, you'll need a beast of a machine to do more than simple edits and get a smooth preview. Quad Core type of thing.

  • @lartrak just copped a i7 ....lovin' it.

  • do you use media tapes? also do you have to get a firewire cable to connect it to your PC then just load the files in?

  • Camera is solid state so no tapes, records to SD Cards (SDHC to be exact) connects via USB 2.0 cable for transfer or if you've got an SD card reader you can plug the chip straight in. I got 1 16GB SDHC class 6 card and reader for like $30 on Amazon.

  • sick, can it also record on HDD?

  • I'm not sure (maybe and external?), but then again I'm not sure why you'd want to either. HDD's haven't gone over real well on cameras. Solid state allows for recording in extreme temperatures, and rough handling situations without skipping. HDD's are possibly more fragile than DV tapes and can easily fail during the conditions I listed above. Plus you can get SD cards at around $2 per GB these days and a 16GB card records almost 100 min of 1080p footage on HMC150 at highest quality.

  • Pretty incredible

  • Show off!

  • what kind of price are we talking here fellas?

  • $3,500
