If you really want a hoot, check out a track called "Seduction" on the "Space:1999" Year 2 Soundtrack. It was written by Derek Wadsworth in 1976 for a dance sequence in an episode titled "One Moment Of Humanity" and ( by the admission of Wadsworth, himself ) is based directly on this track. The only difference is the exact melody...otherwise it's a complete rip-off ! I'm surprised there was never a lawsuit.
Those lush orchestra sounds on this track? Polyphonic synths hadn't been out yet. They're all overdubs, painstakingly crafted by brother Joe. Simply amazing.
1975 Detroit. I was 10 years old and caught this song and artist (thanks WJZZ). Storm At Sunup is the first vinyl LP I bought after bringing home my Aiwa direct drive turntable with strobe and a front loading mechanism. I still have it too.
I didn't aspect such piece of music from Gino V. This sound remember me also Santana in his album "Borboletta"! Anyway Vannelli is still to be studied his sound and voice I just love it!!!
@cruptbside There was no orchestra when I first heard this, It was just Gino, his brother Joe, a percussionist named Diddo and I believe drummer Mark Craney! It sounded, even more richer than this recording. They brought the house down in Chicago at The Civic Opera house.
I heard him live at the Great Southeast Music Hall in Atlanta Georgia. It was the spring of , I think, 1977. This was a little venue that seated about 600 people tops. It was an astounding show. Almost like a private performance. He was a dynamic singer and song writer.
One of the BEST shows i've ever seen is Gino live. If you like his recordings, he'll take you even HIGHER live onstage! I especially love his extended jams like this one and "Where Am I Going" ,"Brother To Brother" and "Down With Love"
i rember this oh so well, it,s was thhe summer of 1975. the girls were great, and love was all around , i miss those day's with a passion. i only wish i would of followed my drean, of being a ro ck star, i think i stood a chance!
@LynnaRenae - I saw him at that concert as well and what was even better was that we had a friend in the music business at the time and I got to go backstage and meet him. Amazing man/talent
He is one of the most unique performers and musicans I've seen and this song is a masterpiece!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Saw him in concert years ago at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago!! @garyda1, yes his music transcends time, race and culture!!!He's the best!!!!!!
Gino Vannelli is one of my favorite artist of all time. The music and songs that he has composed are timeless master pieces. There are so many artist during his era that just do not exist in today's music. It's amazing. Gino's music takes me to another place and world in time. The vibe and feeling I get listening to his work is indiscribeable.
being a man,I saw him live in chicago he gave a very romantic show, he drove the women in the audience crazy he made me very jelouse. at the time i wished i were him.......
"Storm at Sunup" is a most refreshing musical head rush. It takes you to different levels of excitement when you least expect it...!!! What a Helluva!!! entertainer. I had the pleasure of seeing him live several times back in the early seventies.... What a explosion of energy i feel when i really listen... I feel like i'm on the stage playing all the instruments!!! What a helluva KAROKE!!!!!!
Incredible music, especially considering all the overdubbing that brother Joe did on the keyboard parts. Polyphonic synths didn't come out until the late 1970s.
@greeneyesmexico I heard him live for the first time in the late 90's... unreal. Then again a few years ago... whew.. I honestly think he sounds better live than on recordings. You would be soooo much more impressed with the genius that is Gino when you hear him live.
@kenferry You are so right! Recordings don't do Gino justice! Gino's voice is powerful, and he is such a sweet, soft, spoken man! Sigh! I heard him sing this in Chicago in 76, he was fabulous. The vibrato in his voice just penetrated me and lured me into a dream state! I believe he got a standing ovation afterwards. ever since i've been a really big fan of Gino's.
@rogdodge99 In 78 Houston-was dragged to this show. This tune started and he rose up thru a trap door center stage playing a white baby grand wearing all white. Was sitting right up close & I remember it being so unbelievably loud but so incredibly crisp and clean that it didn't hurt.To this day the best sounding live show I have ever heard.Kissed the feet of the person who dragged me-whole thing was great beyond belief
I sooooo wish this concert would be on DVD. I heard about this grand entrance from other lucky people that saw Gino live and they all they to this day that was the most electrifying concert they've ever seen. I'm still waiting to realised that dream :-(
Yes I have seen him 7 times in the past 2 years and have been a fan for 36 years....I can't tell you how awesome it is to hear him live, and if you EVER get the chance, go see him..It will be one of the best things in life that you will ever do for yourself !!!
@rogdodge99 YES Oh My YES!! Best concert I've ever seen.......it was back in the early 80's....never forget that night. He has the more incredible voice and his sense of music is awesome. Just love this man!
@rogdodge99 twice-first in 77-was dragged there by fellow music major pals in college(didnt know who he was and didnt want to go) To this day I get in my knees and thank the lord they did, because I was COMPLETELY blow away.Saw him again in 90...
Gino Vannelli has always been one of my all time favorite artists.
Man oh man, the grief I put up with back in the 70s when I listened to this guy. My friends had the atypical common demoninator type tastes in music, and they thought I was out of my mind for listening to Gino's stuff. I knew they were wrong then, and now... as a much older and wiser person, I know it for a fact. Few other artists have demonstrated the ability to make such passionate and well played music.
I just love his work and music. It was exactly who I was in the 70's a great voice and fusion jazz. I played this song and Love of My Life over and over. Thanks for posting.
Agree with all comments. I wore out a couple of 8 tracks of this album. Had a portable 8 track player with huge speakers. hooked to the lighter with an adapter, back in the late 70's. Incredible music, incredible talent! Bravo!!
That New Orleans show was the first night of that tour, and it was so powerful, that word got out overnight around the whole world what had just happened in NO, that the whole tour turned out to be magic with people screaming like the Beatles were coming for Gino. That is why he has such a special place in his heart for new Orleans, because that first night even blew him away it was so magical. Good job Mary. Doug Ridley from New Orleans, La
This was the first song I heard of Gino (I think it was in 1977). I found it abolutely marvellous. I had never heard anything like that before. Ready for November?
me too! got it on 8 track.... changed my life as a boy living in south texas..... moved to nyc after that... in my mind living out what i thought the music sounded like.
Of course, dear, I'm enjoying this other great classical one of his! Your kind sharing has transported me back to the middle of the 70s when I was beginning my studies in CU!
Hey Mary, I first bought Powerful People after hearing People Gotta Move, and then realized as much as I liked that song, it was the weakest song on the album or 8 track I should say.
