It just blows my mind how the most expensive, well built machines are constructed and fail from the simplest everyday materials. I still can't believe a piece of FOAM caused a billion dollar machine to fail. Why was it critical that something so simple means life or death? It just seems the machine was worth more than the foam that protected it. Just like planes should be made with the materials the black box is made of. Why not? Just makes me scratch my head.
@mbigboyny Cuz every single part must conserve weight to minimum. and it never is an easy task. Increase weight on the part lead to increase weight in fuel which will also then requires to increase fuel to push the weight of that increased fuel's mass.. Take all the weigh addtion multiply the distance the shuttle lauch.
after watching a few of these videos, these astronauts had NO IDEA that the wing was ruptured during take-off. this is what caused the "break-up" or literally the "burn-up" of columbia. they had absolutely no idea what was about to happen, I think ground control did. They caught the strike of the wing, and did not tell the crew how bad it really was. Maybe they didn't know how bad, but knew that it wasn't good. What do you do or say ? ....................

Why in hell did they not get the Russians to send up supplies while another shuttle was readied for a rescue mission?
@TheSpiritof1969 They could have done what I mentioned in my prior comment. Nasa doesnt cross their fingers to hope things work out. Linda Ham (mission manager) simply made the wrong choice to persue the matter. Manned and unmanned rocket launches (from any country ) take months and yrs of planning to get them off the ground. In this case, if foam came off the ET, you dont launch another knowing the same thing could happen again putting another crew in danger.
@amgen52 You assume that mission had the capability of an EVA that could reach the damaged area. The damage was on the leading edge of the wing, what makes you think that stuffing the cavity would have increased the chances of survival?
@TheSpiritof1969 All shuttle flights had EVA capability including STS107. This flight however did not have the robotic arm. Getting to the wing and under the orbiter was always practiced with tethers. That however could also do additional damage. Water bags and blankets could have prevented the aluminum spar from melting at 900 degrees long enough so the wing would not structurally fail. Or additional things could have been added like stainless tools etc. Lots of equip. survived
@TheSpiritof1969 I believe that it was Gene Kranz that suggested completing that very task on either the learning channels or the BBC's special broadcast on the investigation. Several instances of it are upload on here.
@cirvine11 quite possible. the shuttle was already shedding debris at that point though not bad so the thrusters and the computer would be attempting to compensate for the drag. the shuttle is on full auto pilot until just the final approach to ksc.

@Josiqvideos09 did you know about some large bundles of cash on Columbia that none of us were aware of? You say they wasted money so I'm just wondering how any was wasted when all that money spent on Columbia and it's mission was already used to pay the people and private companies that built it? If your boss came to you asking for your paychecks back because something you were instructed by him to work hard on was really a waste in his opinion? Would it help if he said you were probably going
Fuck you, Mr. Tubby. The shuttle program was dropped to allow for private enterprise to take over a big chunk of our space program. We still spend lots of money at NASA for future, and better space flight, and we pay big to fly with the Russians. It has nothing to do with money. The US will always be the greatest country on this planet, and don't you forget it.

Anybody who just saw canadian1797 racist comment, I apologize. If there is one thing I will not tolerate in my comments is the racist comments blaming tragedy on specific ethnicity simply because they are of a different race.
canadian1797 has been blocked. I will not repeat what he said but it was fouled mouthed language.
@yourjudgeandjury you said GOOD RIDDANCE as in it´s GOOD that they are GONE. Couldn´t you just say "it´s sad yes but people die all the time" not GOOD RIDDENCE.
@ElvarK1 I never said that and I never will about this accident! You need to check who you are directing your remarks to. I take great offense to your comment that I ever said GOOD RIDANCE to this crew. Not a day goes by I don't think about the accident. In fact I have the photos of both the Columbia crew and the Challenger crew sitting proudly on my desk at work. I think you owe me a public apology in this forum when it was your arguement with itachiitachi1946 about saying GOOD RIDANCE.
we wont be seeing any more video's like this for a while, seeing as the good ol' u.s. of A is virtually bankrupt and on its arse. maybe now you can consider keeping your nose out of other countries business and concentrate on keeping your own affairs in order. war-mongers.
@MrTubbymarshall and I guess we won't be seeing comments like this for a while, either, seeing as good ol' Europe is even more vurtually bankrupt and on its ass. Maybe now you can consider not being a complete idiot and concentrate on putting apostrophes in the right places. (by the way, I'm pretty sure stealing other peoples' countries and assembling the largest empire in history isn't exactly keeping your nose out of others' affairs, no disrespect to the UK, though. no one's perfect)
I THINK THEY MUST CONDUCT A OUTSIDE INSPECTION OF THE SHUTTLE BEFORE THE DESCEND, LIKE THE PILOTS OF A PASSENGER AIRPLANE, THEY DO OUTSIDE INSPECTION FIRST BEFORE PROCEEDING THE TAKEOFF SEQUENCE , BECAUSE IF THEY DO, THEY HAVE SEEN THE HOLE OF THE SHUTTLES WING, IF SO? THEY HAVE DONE SOMETHING TO PREVENT THE ACCIDENT....
this is total bull 7 min to re-enter the atmosphere maybe 1 min 7min no way hog wash if you ask MEEEEEEEEEEEEEE....at first they said lighting then foam you be the JUDGE!!!!!!
@Thatboy1980 "7 min to re-enter the atmosphere maybe 1 min 7min no way"
Why would you think it only takes one minute to reenter? Reentry is much longer than 7 minutes for the Shuttle, by the way. It's longer even for Soyuz.
"at first they said lighting"
No they didn't. There was one picture taken that convinced some (non-NASA/CAIB) people that lightning struck, but it turned out to be vibrations of the camera during a long exposure.
@roamingcroat and let me guess they told you that ,,,,, look it up nasa said lighting strike my friend then they said foam really that ceramic tile can stop meteorites at thousands if not hundred of mph my friend you are silly you believe anything this is apparent to me ....
@Thatboy1980 "and let me guess they told you that"
A quick back of the envelope shows that for the Shuttle to return from Low Earth Orbit in one minute, the average heat flux on its underside would be around 10 kW/cm^2 and its average deceleration would have to be 13 times that of gravity. I don't need NASA to tell me those numbers are wrong.
@roamingcroat and show me the link that say its take longer that seven min remember that burt rutan scale composites was the first private space plane it took only 1/2 min my friend look up apolo program my friend you believe any thing you read from nasa your a puppet on strings like the rest ...
@roamingcroat long exposure come on my friend E>M>P wave will have the same effect on a cam what will seem to be long exposure that's lighting but really was shot down by alien weapon eye witness seen the whole event in cal. on that day and Texas it made headline then they where forced to retract that story my friend i like nasa as will but they have there black programs just as all arm forces do special projects did they tell you that my friend...
@roamingcroat that whole craft is covered in tile my friend yes even the L.E.X leading edge extension and those numbers mean nothing do you know where i work ,,,,
@Thatboy1980 "that whole craft is covered in tile" For a back of the envelope, average heating calculation like that, assuming all the heat goes to the underside is a fair approximation. The heating on the upper side can be fairly well neglected. No matter. 10 kW/cm^2 is already an order of magnitude too high for even peak heating, let alone average.
@Thatboy1980 People like you are why everyone thinks conspiracy theorists are nut jobs. When someone actually has a valid point no one listens because they're thinking "Eh he's just like that mongoloid Thatboy1980, that queef didn't even know about reentry burn."
Im still sad about this. But, all Astronauts risk their lives, Its how we learn. My hat is off and I will always respect those who have fallen in our pursuit of space. This is something worth dying for.
@BLACKFLANIGAN Yeah we don't need to hear that kind of language.......and yourjudgeandjury kicks....it's up...up...it's gooooodd! You're outta here permanently....
@Marens777 That's crazy stuff. I tried moving annotations around a bit but it still does it. It's really weird because here, it's 7:51 in length. In the annotation editing page, it's 7:50. Sharp eye Marens.
i dont know if you guys know this but from thw wreckage of the shuttle they found data or something of that sort that said that four of the crew members were still alive for about 1 or 2 minutes after the explosion which meant they knew what happened and felt everything...chilling in my opinion
@DEMONshot666 I know. I just found audio between Columbia and Mission control that is very scary. It isn't the same audio in this or any of my other videos or videos you see on YouTube. It's audio of either McCool or Husband that you can clearly hear how scared they are and the panic in their voice. About a fraction of a second later, transmission and the Columbia begins to break up. My jaw hit my desk when I found it. Will have to post it real soon.
@Heinrich1122 there is a link on the annotation at the end. I also posted the complete crew cabin video yesterday that contains about 5 minutes of extra footage, Check out my channel page to see it.
The video you see here on this page was posted when I first signed on to YouTube so I wasn't, at that time, allowed to upload videos greater than 10 mins in length.
@Stoozor It's coming guys. It's going to be a plane jane slide show to have the audio play against. Then I am going to work it into the timeline exactly from all the videos, reports, etc....I've been collecting here and there.
Be sure to subscribe so you know when it is launched.
@JanitorIsBack hmmmm mission patches show this is STS-107, several points during the video you hear the astronauts names, not to mention over 260,000 people say it is from Columbia STS-107. You are so very wrong and have no clue to what the heck you are watching.
@jerrythedutchmapler again you need to really get your facts straight before you say this isn't from Columbia. It is. The mission patches and the astronaut names used throughout. If you refuse to believe this is from Columbia then go suck a booster rocket.
Columbia was my favorite space shuttle. The 1st, the one who paved the way for Challenger (may she and her crew rest in peace), Discovery, Atlantis, and last but not least, the baby of the space shuttles, Endeavour. I hope Columbia and her astronauts are in a better place now with Challenger and her crew as well. I remember when i got up excited early in the morning to watch Columbia's reentry live, just to watch the death of these 7 astronauts and Columbia. I cried my eyes out for days,
@GoAtlantis135 I remember a comic strip that appeared soon after Columbia was lost. It was a picture of Columbia heading towards the gates of heaven and the speech bubble from heaven read "Columbia you are cleared to land. Welcome home."
I am working on another tribute for the entire space shuttle fleet and should have it ready by Monday if I can keep from tearing up. It is going to be an emotional video for viewers to see. Get tissues ready.
just so you no this video footage ends 4 minutes before the shuttles disintegration and the flames are normal.and as for the last parts of audio being removed is rubbish.they stopped filming inside the shuttle 4 mins BEFORE anything appered wrong to the shuttle crew.why make up such sick things.creep.
Fourth: Nasa believes that they are gods, but no matter how many great and unique discoveries that they make, but there is still something that they can not beat; all they have to die, such what kind of gods are they, nothing more than infernal souls.
So, thanks to real God Jehova, this evil empire NASA, finally it's began to end at July 8, 2011 ...
No one can fight against Jehova, God of Israel. All the humanity going to be witness of it.
@josiqvideos09 I agree that the astronauts had to accept the possibility of death, but they took that risk for the sake of exploration. Without NASA, we wouldn't have many of things that we use everyday, like GPS, computers, satellites, even cell phones, so you kind of have to give them some credit. How can you be sure that the people at NASA think themselves as gods? Where would we be in terms of technology without the space program? We would know nothing of the universe around us without it.
@micmaclovesmusic Great comment; But please remember this: GOD IS NOT AGAINST SCIENCE, Bible says, ''La ciencia avanzara en gran manera'' , so God already knows that we (humans), will going to create unique discoveries and wonderfull greatest Technologies devices ever imagined, but God is not against all that; is against the use of those POWER, FOR puporses that do not help people in their living needs, like needs of food that can be payed with all those millions from Nasa. Thanks.
@josiqvideos09 Thank you. And I was not trying to say that he is against science. I'm just hoping that with the Shuttle Era coming to an end, NASA can focus on developing faster and more efficient spacecraft that can take us further into our exploration of the universe without using extensive spending or taking lives.
@Doever I respect your comment; but the good part is that you also have to die someday... By the way, let me tell you that don't matter if you have deny about God existence, and say there is no god; if you someday feels that you have to repent, and accept His existence, please feel free to do it, there is still time, until you are alive. And please do this, read the Bible, but not partially read it all, and then tell me again that there is no good. God bless you.
@josiqvideos09 lul, NASA isn't ending...The Space Shuttle Program is. Similar to the Apollo missions ending. We will have another program in a couple years and NASA will be in charge. So, rage quit yo.
Come on, how much hypocrisy here: NASA kills them.
First: Cut their voices for respect? Respect of what? Come on, what happens when people kills people in our earth, what happens when a kid is abused, what happens with all them, are they respected?
Second: They known the risk, so they should be agree with the possibily of death.
Third: Expending millions of dolars, in such kinds of shit, when in our planet millions of people and children have no food to eat.
Very gruesome death. I read a report that was not pubicized too much that said one astronauts' scalp they found embedded into the inside of the helmit. .......RIP
@tjrxk7 and I have the pictures of the melted helmets and visors, what was left of the seat restraints along with a severed helmet ring, a charred and partially melted emergency O2 canisters (report says it was deployed/in use when found) and a couple of other photos I am still pondering whether to put into a video or not. But every time I go back to look at the photos and start thinking of ideas, I can't get the images of the crew and what they went through out of my mind.....
check out the harrp flashes through the window, they were taken out by there own government.. sick.. the us government and bankers need to be toppled and overthrown before they bring about the end of the planet..
@karimano24 You've got to be the biggest idiot ever. That is the entry burn caused by entering the atmosphere at a high speed, it happens with every shuttle. What a moron. Also it's not HARRP it's HAARP. Are you a mongoloid?
heros no matter what any body says these people are a special kinds of people who are smart and have nerves to do things that most people would not dare to do may these folks rest in piece and may we always appreciate there jobs they do this also goes for the challenger crew too r.i.p all of you
Guys, I know the captain could of took a physical look at the wing before re-entry and have suplies sent up, but they were Heroes! They save other lives by pointing out the new Shuttle faults, such as weak wings etc etc! They were volunteers and they were a test crew for it, they are Heroes...
@LeClassics It's not, you can hear some light airflow at first, but even as they are flying reentry they are still in about a 98% vacuum, the airlfow gets louder down around 70,000 feet or so, where the air density begins to pick up more. During the first part of reentry, all they really hear is the APU running.
@LeClassics Since its realy hot when you re-entry to earth, becuase of the Blunt nose the atomousphere will go over the plane and produce heat on the Aluminium so its orange - If you actuely stick your hand into the atmousphere it will basicly disintergrate apparently :P Soz for the mis-spells :P
I apologize for the outright racist comment made today about mission specialist Kalpana Chawla by youtuber AtomicFlash500 stating it was her fault for the accident because of her ethnicity. The comment was immediately removed and the user banned.
i find videos like this odd as well.. when we know what fate they had. It is strange seeing them alive and well and happy.. knowing what is about to happen to them in a few minutes time. I hate it when the video ends.. you know that within 4 minutes or so after.. they must have been suffering a horrible death
@superdave31 well didnt it explode basically instantly? I mean surely at that speed and the fact that it was insanely hot would have killed them in a millisecond.
@IcyScythe oh yeh i suppose. I still find videos odd tho when you know they will be dead in a few moments time, sad really. Also does make me wonder how many people may have suffered horrible deaths like the people in sept 11 - or recently the air france plane that just dropped out of the sky, but took 4 minutes to hit the sea...
@superdave31 Ya knowing for a full 4 minutes ahead of time you're falling towards your death would definitely be terrifying. And ya watching videos of "dead men walking" definitely has a weird vibe about it.
what i dont get is supposedly some nasa engineers asked nasa to give them pictures of the damage (before it came back home) and nasa refused. i dont get this.. why do people refuse things like this? what is there to lose by alllowing the engineers to look at it? As for their deaths.. some people have suffered horrfic horrific deaths that we just cannot imagine what they went through
@superdave31 "what is there to lose by alllowing the engineers to look at it?"
The answer is, sadly, absolutely nothing. The engineers thought they may have a problem and wanted images, but the managers wanted proof there was damage before requesting spy satellite images or alerting the crew. A spacewalk would have been dangerous, so there was reason to not do that, but not asking for satellite images was quite simply wrong.
Sadly, it's a "hindsight is 20-20" type of situation.
@RainbowManification reading up on it though, i get the suspicion that while the ship was in space.. before re entering eearth - engineers were worried the ship was damaged (but nasa thought nothing could be done anyway, even if it was damaged) - and i wonder if they told them then.. that they had worries it was damaged
@RainbowManification this is not true. during the older space missions such as apollo they had blackout because of the plasma created during re-entry, blocking communications sent down to earth. the shuttle, now having satellites to send transmissions to on the trailing edge where there is no plasma to block transmissions, keeps full contact with houston during re-entry.
@Za7a7aZ "Roger, uhhhhh...." static followed by what sounds like muffled screams. Go view my latest video, "So Close To Home". You can barely make out faint screams in the garbled final transmission before it totally breaks up. You can also see one NASA person begin to tear up when that transmission was received.....All followed by other NASA persons in Houston calling out "We're taking a few hits on the tail, not too bad...." and other warnings.
It just blows my mind how the most expensive, well built machines are constructed and fail from the simplest everyday materials. I still can't believe a piece of FOAM caused a billion dollar machine to fail. Why was it critical that something so simple means life or death? I remember the accident happened when I was 7, when I saw it on TV I started to cry...
How the countdown clock on the landing site has counted down to 0 and started over again while there was still no shuttle seen.
Those people are heroes. They risk their lives for the sake of humanity.

ElvarK1 3 months ago
@ElvarK1 I never said that and I never will about this accident! You need to check who you are directing your remarks to. I take great offense to your comment that I ever said GOOD RIDANCE to this crew. Not a day goes by I don't think about the accident. In fact I have the photos of both the Columbia crew and the Challenger crew sitting proudly on my desk at work. I think you owe me a public apology in this forum when it was your arguement with itachiitachi1946 about saying GOOD RIDANCE.
yourjudgeandjury 3 months ago
@yourjudgeandjury shit sorry my last comment was not meant for you but for itachiitachi1946 when he commented good riddance on this video.
he came up with some philosophy that people die all the time and that 7 people dying at once wasn´t that important.

Thatboy1980 7 months ago
@Thatboy1980 "7 min to re-enter the atmosphere maybe 1 min 7min no way"
Why would you think it only takes one minute to reenter? Reentry is much longer than 7 minutes for the Shuttle, by the way. It's longer even for Soyuz.
"at first they said lighting"
No they didn't. There was one picture taken that convinced some (non-NASA/CAIB) people that lightning struck, but it turned out to be vibrations of the camera during a long exposure.
roamingcroat 7 months ago
@roamingcroat and let me guess they told you that ,,,,, look it up nasa said lighting strike my friend then they said foam really that ceramic tile can stop meteorites at thousands if not hundred of mph my friend you are silly you believe anything this is apparent to me ....
Thatboy1980 7 months ago
@Thatboy1980 "and let me guess they told you that"
A quick back of the envelope shows that for the Shuttle to return from Low Earth Orbit in one minute, the average heat flux on its underside would be around 10 kW/cm^2 and its average deceleration would have to be 13 times that of gravity. I don't need NASA to tell me those numbers are wrong.
"nasa said lighting strike"
Source?
"ceramic tile"
The damage was to the RCC leading edge.
"can stop meteorites"
Not without damage, and not large ones.

It was suborbital.
"look up apolo program"
Apollo had much higher g force on entry than Shuttle. The Shuttle generates much more lift. Apples and oranges.

"even the L.E.X leading edge extension"
Shuttle hasn't got leading edge extensions...
"do you know where i work "
Nope.

@DEMONshot666 I know. I just found audio between Columbia and Mission control that is very scary. It isn't the same audio in this or any of my other videos or videos you see on YouTube. I cried my eyes out for days,
GoAtlantis135 8 months ago
@GoAtlantis135 I remember a comic strip that appeared soon after Columbia was lost. It was a picture of Columbia heading towards the gates of heaven and the speech bubble from heaven read "Columbia you are cleared to land. Welcome home."
I am working on another tribute for the entire space shuttle fleet and should have it ready by Monday if I can keep from tearing up. It is going to be an emotional video for viewers to see. Get tissues ready.

Thanks, and please respect all comments.
josiqvideos09 8 months ago
@josiqvideos09 I agree that the astronauts had to accept the possibility of death, but they took that risk for the sake of exploration. Without NASA, we wouldn't have many of things that we use everyday, like GPS, computers, satellites, even cell phones, so you kind of have to give them some credit. How can you be sure that the people at NASA think themselves as gods? Where would we be in terms of technology without the space program? We would know nothing of the universe around us without it.
micmaclovesmusic 8 months ago
@micmaclovesmusic Great comment; But please remember this: GOD IS NOT AGAINST SCIENCE, Bible says, ''La ciencia avanzara en gran manera'' , so God already knows that we (humans), will going to create unique discoveries and wonderfull greatest Technologies devices ever imagined, but God is not against all that; is against the use of those POWER, FOR puporses that do not help people in their living needs, like needs of food that can be payed with all those millions from Nasa. Thanks.
josiqvideos09 8 months ago
@josiqvideos09 Thank you. And I was not trying to say that he is against science. During the first part of reentry, all they really hear is the APU running.

I hate it when the video ends.. you know that within 4 minutes or so after.. they must have been suffering a horrible death
superdave31 9 months ago
@superdave31 well didnt it explode basically instantly? I mean surely at that speed and the fact that it was insanely hot would have killed them in a millisecond.
IcyScythe 9 months ago
@IcyScythe oh yeh i suppose. I still find videos odd tho when you know they will be dead in a few moments time, sad really. Also does make me wonder how many people may have suffered horrible deaths like the people in sept 11 - or recently the air france plane that just dropped out of the sky, but took 4 minutes to hit the sea...
superdave31 9 months ago
@superdave31 Ya knowing for a full 4 minutes ahead of time you're falling towards your death would definitely be terrifying. And ya watching videos of "dead men walking" definitely has a weird vibe about it.
IcyScythe 9 months ago
what i dont get is supposedly some nasa engineers asked nasa to give them pictures of the damage (before it came back home) and nasa refused. i dont get this.. why do people refuse things like this? what is there to lose by alllowing the engineers to look at it? As for their deaths.. some people have suffered horrfic horrific deaths that we just cannot imagine what they went through
superdave31 9 months ago
@superdave31 "what is there to lose by alllowing the engineers to look at it?"
The answer is, sadly, absolutely nothing. The engineers thought they may have a problem and wanted images, but the managers wanted proof there was damage before requesting spy satellite images or alerting the crew. A spacewalk would have been dangerous, so there was reason to not do that, but not asking for satellite images was quite simply wrong.
Sadly, it's a "hindsight is 20-20" type of situation.

RainbowManification 9 months ago
@RainbowManification i was wondering that too - did nasa tell them their shuttle was damaged? i dont know
superdave31 9 months ago
@superdave31 Nasa loses radio contact with shuttles during reentry, so if they knew they couldn't tell them.
RainbowManification 9 months ago
@RainbowManification reading up on it though, i get the suspicion that while the ship was in space.. before re entering eearth - engineers were worried the ship was damaged (but nasa thought nothing could be done anyway, even if it was damaged) - and i wonder if they told them then.. that they had worries it was damaged
superdave31 9 months ago
@superdave31 thats interesting. Maybe the people at nasa didn't tell them because they where trying to cover their asses
RainbowManification 9 months ago
