See the thing about Sammy, is live he sounds just like the studio cut. The guy was is amazing in that respect. For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge is one of their best efforts with Sammy, IMO.
Just all together and over the years, they have been such amazing group!
This is one band of great musicians that will keep influencing others for years to come . No doubt in my mind.
There are so many errors in the comments of this video; I thought I'd set the record strait.
Edward Van Halen built one of the most famous Guitars in history out of discount Charvel body and neck; because it was a great quality wood and had only cosmetic flaws. He used a router to make room for Humbucker style pickups. He custom wound the pickups; and thru trial an error found the dipping them in molten Sexwax surfboard wax he could produce a tonal quality that no other luthier had ever done.
Refering to Jim Yakabuski...live sound/production guy. Jim mixed Van Halen for 10 yrs. From F.U.C.K to the end of the Gary Cherone era. Jim did 3 tours w Avril. He's w Rob Thomas now. Jim never mixed Van Halen really loud. 106 db "A-Weghted". The re-union tour in 2008 was 113 db...really loud and brash. Jim's mix was more....brown.
@eddiehalenvan franki? dont you mean michael? and he's cool with wolfgang playin with his dad and uncle. michael is involved with chickenfoot with dave grohl.
@cameronhawkins1187 no Michael is pissed because thye never called him for the reunion and it's Chad Smith of the Chili Peppers that is the drummer for Chickenfoot
@vanhalenreaper I think the one that you are thinking of is a Strat the Eddie modified. It is called a Frakensteiner. Replicas are sold now, but I think they go for 20k or something like that. I would never buy one. The guitar Eddie plays in this video is probably a Peavey Wolfgang. I wouldn't drop the thousands of dollars just to buy a guitar that Eddie endorses though. Just get a good guitar with hot pickups, a high-gain amp, and practice your ass off.
Sammy is one, if not the only long time rocker that still got the good looks, pipes, that overall view. most dont do age well, look at me, I look like hell these days. lol. keep knockin them out Sammy.
I was lucky enough to be at The Tampa show in August 2002 ,and was on stage with Sammy & Mike, and I am in the DVD of that show.... What a night...To Bad Dave was Drunk.....
Michael Anthony is one lucky mutherfucker. He must have been the subject of BTO's song Takin' care of business..."Get a second hand guitar, chances are you'll go far if you get in with the right bunch of fellows".
The postings of get your own tone are so right. You need to learn what it is that you are able to get out of the gear that you have and the forge ahead with your own sonics and ideas. Its a quest that usually results in finding your own sound and style.Just remeber to always keep the tape recorder rolling so you do not loose the magic When it happens. Thanks for the posting and if anyone else has anything behind the scenes like, please post it. Cheers
He said his tone was from a heavily modified Marshall head, when actually it was completely stock with a variac transformer in the back. The main tone factor, the pickups, you have to know exactly what you want and tell the people at a certain pickup manufacturer so you can have them custom made. Even beyond that you can see people all over spreading all kinds of disinformation about it, such as the idea that his tone is in his amp, tubes, or hands.
Eddie said a lot of shit that wasn't true. But his tone doesn't lie. Plug a Strat with a PAF into a dimed plexi & you have the brown sound. Anyone with ears knew it was BS.
@elpuma817 though there are tones that are just unbeatable. Can't say I have or would ever spend a lot of money to slightly improve the authenticity of someone else's tone, that seems a bit over the top.
@elpuma817 . Yeah, I've got the 5150 II amp and the Music Man Guitar but it wasn't to get Ed's tone. It was because they are simply the best rig out there. I know Mesa players and every time I see them playing they have issues with them. I've been running the 5150& 5150 II's for 15+ years and have NEVER had a problem.
@elpuma817 yea that's why Peter Frampton called Ed back in the day and asked how the hell are you getting that drooling tone out of that stock marshall ;-) the rest of the tone is in your mind and hands ;;-)
@elpuma817 We stick together on that. As much as I love Eddie, Hendrix, Page, Vai,etc.... I feel people often waste their lives putting so much of themselves into reliving someone elses musical moments. Great music can still be created if you follow your own path.
Whoa, Eddie looks really pissed off, how could he be pissed off, look at all his amps! and that fucking sweet wolfgang. Maybe it is because the sound tech tells them to run through a song for 45 secs and then Sammy turns round to everyone and says the same exact thing, he is still fucking cool though.
a cheap way ive learned is to take like a pillow or something like that and put it in front of your cabinet, it takes out some of the highs and squeakiness and gives it a little more warmth. try it lol.
good thing for your room or jus use actual acoustics like cork is better but im not meanin this in a mean way im jus sayin i dont think ur gonna be able to take a pillow on stage to improve acoustics lol (again not meant to be mean)
think about it, eddie is a tone king, hes probably always pissed about his tone
and to get the brown sound you have to sell your soul to the devil haha...no i think the brownsound can be achieved (roughly) by pushing mids, dropping treble to a less grainy tone, and pushing bass without becoming boomy, have plenty of gain.....and just decent equipment, pickups, amp ect.....i know there will be a million comments now bc i had an opinion about something lol
i agree plum all ya need is the right equip such as the right guitar the right amp the right gain and amount of gain and the right guitar and amp settings and good acoustics wouldnt hurt lol
it's a mater of what era tone you want for 1978 tone go for a 25watt marshall plexi superlead a superstrat a touch of delay and reverb turn all knobs all the way up and let 'er rip other wise for any other tone go getyourself a 5150 amp and look on the internet for good tone settings the rest is trial and error.
your rite ejg5150. but wouldn't ya say the basics of the brown sound would be a marshall amp and a single humbucker pickup guitar. that rings ture no matter what era of vanhalen..
The only thing that matters is the pickups you use. If you want to use a cranked Marshall that's fine, but it's not how he got his sound. The tone is from the pickups, and the drive is from his playing style. I happen to know the right setup, but it's pretty hush hush.
pickups are important but i dont agree...its a formula-like a recipe. its a combination of things, speakers also play a huge role here. most guys who imitate eds sound use waaay too much gain/distortion. no stomp boxes can get it. its an amp thing more than a pick up thing, imo. the mids have to be there, and pedals typically fizz out in this application. the amp transformer matters ...the most important thing is the amp, and its components.
The guitarists' sound comes from 1.his hands 2. his gut,, 3. his heart,,,4. his soul.....and that's it!! seriously,,,,,Eddie could be using a rubber band w/a wooden board, and you would "know" it was him,,,,it's in his blood ,,,,maaaaaaan!!!
He used several amps, some of which were combos. The amp and speaker thing goes out the window there. He didn't just use Marshalls either. He had a Fender he used too.
The mid boost is in the pickups he used, and the gain was in his playing style. He really wailed on those strings.
i completely agree with you, you can get his exact amps and settings on the amps, and mods on the amps, i have tried this myself, yet not quite a v h sound, but then tried with an old evh replica guitar with the exact same pickups evh used and tried playing in his style it sounded just like evh, it was the pickups mainly in my opinion
Bodacious8828, i think eddie was mad cause it looked like he was trying to listen to something with his guitar. (tuning, monitor level) but alex started playing a drum solo in the middle. so basically ed was trying to listen, alex was making noise.LOL
And to add-on, Michael and Sammy both said they would never perform with Van Halen ever again.
I actually went to one of their shows in 2006. Lynyrd Skynyrd was my first ever concert earlier that year. I thought that was out of this fucking world... I was wrong... lol
Saw Sammy and Scorps last year in Orange County. He kicked f(&kn ass! Unbeleivable, blew the Scorpions off the stage. It was actually embarrassing for them, I think (their soundman didnt' get it right either).
Not a Sammy fan, but I never saw him actually looking sexy as in this video, wow, he definately can sing but I never knew he could fit the front man sexy image
Sammy looks extremely HOT in this clip. Best I have ever seen him look, tanned and the hair all sun-bleached. Nice to work in LA and run your Cabo San Lucas empire! He earned it - he keep himself clean, and worked hard. Too bad they went their separate ways. You ROCK Sammy!
I was such a big fan of Ed, That when I was around 14 (born 1965) I built my own "Frankenstrat" look-a-like guitar, complete with the red, white & black pinstriping! To: anyone that hasn't heard "Catherine" by Eddie & Alex, please check it out on you tube. Ed has always been my guitar hero! I learned how to do hammer-ons and pull offs (finger tapping)before I learned how to play simple chords! !
I can't for the life of me figure out why so many DLR fans can't get with the program on this 5150 tone! It's pissed me off for years that DLR fans have this stick up their ass about nothing else sounds good but him. He WAS good, yes, but Sammy rocks and he is a great guy as well. DLR is a jerk off to his fans. Eddie's tone during the Sammy Era sounded HUGE!!! It was such an awesome and unique tone. No one else sounded like that in rock n' roll. The chorus added so much dimension to his tone.
1993...damn I feel old. I was born in 1972. I graduated High School in 1990. Damn I feel old. Hey, you have an excellent hero there!! Eddie is one of my (MANY) guitar heroes.
every body needs to shut up I'm tired of reading the same thing on every Van HAlen video i watch (SH is better that DLR no DLR is better than SH) let me put it this way its getting old they both gave great songs to the band they both are unique and both of tham have those songs you just cant stand to listen to so stop its getting old (bunch of 14 year olds who think they know everything)
they are two complete different guys. different performing and singing styles who each contributed to VH and made good images for em. some ppl prefer one over the other but get a grip. that battle was for the 80s and thats it. get over yourselves
I don't care what anyone says, Van Halen reached it's true potential with Sammy Hagar. His voice is better then Daves, he plays guitar and he's not the egotistical weirdo Roth is. EVH screwed up badly with the way he treated this guy and he took Michael Anthony with him, bad move there too.

I was wrong... lol
Bodacious8828 2 years ago
Was Eddie mad at something? He kind of stormed off and then Sammy was like we'll see you tonight, maybe not.
Bodacious8828 2 years ago
Saw Sammy and Scorps last year in Orange County. He kicked f(&kn ass! Unbeleivable, blew the Scorpions off the stage. It was actually embarrassing for them, I think (their soundman didnt' get it right either).

Not a Sammy fan, but I never saw him actually looking sexy as in this video, wow, he definately can sing but I never knew he could fit the front man sexy image

Ugh Ed....why must you tune to E standard, stick with E flat.
PatVanHalen5150 2 years ago
Sammy looks extremely HOT in this clip. Best I have ever seen him look, tanned and the hair all sun-bleached. Nice to work in LA and run your Cabo San Lucas empire! He earned it - he keep himself clean, and worked hard. Too bad they went their separate ways. You ROCK Sammy!

ahhhh i miss this band.

It's like so weird to see Eddie rockin' a tune out on stage and not jumping around all over the place.

WHO'S THE BOSS????
FOXACHECK 3 years ago

Hagar is a much better singer than DLR. But DLR is more unique and gave Van Halen their original sound.

1993...damn I feel old. I was born in 1972. I graduated High School in 1990. Damn I feel old. Hey, you have an excellent hero there!! Eddie is one of my (MANY) guitar heroes.
BullShnit 3 years ago
see how eddie took charge? he said fuck it and started a song. that shows who the boss is.
FOXACHECK 3 years ago 6
No actually the sound-man told them to play a song. and Eddie listened to him.
evh5150316 3 years ago
every body needs to shut up I'm tired of reading the same thing on every Van HAlen video i watch (SH is better that DLR no DLR is better than SH) let me put it this way its getting old they both gave great songs to the band they both are unique and both of tham have those songs you just cant stand to listen to so stop its getting old (bunch of 14 year olds who think they know everything)
twosup 3 years ago 5
they are two complete different guys. different performing and singing styles who each contributed to VH and made good images for em. some ppl prefer one over the other but get a grip. that battle was for the 80s and thats it. get over yourselves
SpadeDrummer17 3 years ago
Why argue who is better I have great memories from both lineups!
