  • Dum, dum, deedle dum, dum

    Duck, cover & kiss your a _ _ good-bye

  • I think you'll still be vapourised

  • I would hate to have to worry about broken glass.......

  • Vault-Tec. Preparing for a better future and a brighter life.

  • Better grab my stimpacks.

  • wow, none of the fallout shelters they built would have protected you. They might have survived the blast, but not the radiation.

  • looks like one dude wants a nuke up his crack... lol

  • Translation for Duck and Cover, Put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye.

  • In 1951, there were NO ICBMS (not even Sputnik, until '59). Any conceivable Russian nuclear attack against the US would have to have been carried by bombers, flying over the North Pole or Pacific Ocean, and that in turn meant a good chance of interception by US/Canadian air forces.

Thus, the idea and strategy of a "winnable" nuclear war prevailed --- because at the time, it actually was.

  • I love how lightning just flashed when I watched the bomb without warning part loll

  • @DaveDude571 no it would be a reference to the Russians

  • Now adays the turtle would still be America but the suicide prone monkey would be a Muslim. But the turtle would have no shell because Obama took it away.

  • Bert the turttle wld be so fucked up

  • the monkey hanging from the tree with dynamite could be a reference to japs

  • @DaveDude571 - it is. . .

  • @DaveDude571 More Like Soviets....

  • @MrMundy107 well i thought of it as japanese because of the kamikazes but since this is the cold war i suppose it could be that too.

  • obey the overseer

  • Obey the civil defense worker....

  • The idea of this was simply to make folks feel like they could do something if the nukes would have been launched. the film is silly but the threat was very real. We were very close to nuclear exchange a number of times. I thank god that our military was strong and able to stand off the russians. They were and are still a threat. Putin is not a good human being by any standard. The only thing that stands off scumbags like Putin, N. Korea, Muslim Radicals is military might.

  • how can you cover the back of your neck with your face?

  • 1:37 3:21 5:19 8:37 Early Integration? What progressive schools this town had.

6:12 OUCH! Poor Patty. Uninjured by bomb. Concussion by Paul.

8:16 "Duck and cover" until the tractor runs over your ass.

  • this movie gave me flashbacks of fallout 3.

  • kids must've been so screwed up after all this.

  • fuck me its a vaut-tec info film.

  • Get in the house fast and they're walking..and no it will not throw you around your ass is dust

  • I like his little Civil Defense helmet.

  • Duck and cop a feel off the chick under the next desk.

  • the bomb will distroy biuldings but is u duck and cover u will live

  • Hmmm... they're protecting themselves from a fucking fireball by hiding under wood... hiding under kindling!

  • @Hartford1992 It all depends on how far away people are from the blast. Yes, many people would die in an attack, but also many would be in the zone where these techniques could be of use.

  • Apparently monkeys are commies...

  • Michael Bay should direct a modern remake of this lol.

  • The EAS helps us today by providing real-time alerts. But, call me paranoid, but sometimes I think these 'comfort films' should be brought back with todays times, especially with all over the paranoia created with 9/11.

  • the moral of the story is. if Ivan had drop the bomb put your head between your leg and kiss your ass good bye kids.

  • hmm, do we still have those kinds of bomb shelters? i'm just asking because i've never seen those "S signs" in my life. if not, we should have them. just in case, you know? Call me paranoid...but there could still be nuclear attack... and I've grown quite fond of living.

  • @zkilla30 No, thet were de-activated a long time ago, mostly by neglect...

  • @wardenphil yeah i see what you mean...probably after the "Cold War" scare, right? i'm just saying i think we should start them up again...because the nuclear threat still isn't over if hostile countries still have those types of arms at their disposal.

  • @zkilla30 I'm not sure they would be of any use against today's terrorist / rogue nation threat. This would be a much smaller attack, but with little or no warning.

  • Stick your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye!

  • I heard a ThunderBolt 1000T and Federal Sign & Signal 2T22

  • Good thing for Burt that today's turtle has been bred to have shells that're 99 44/100 percent lead!

  • Baked Turtle anyone???

  • cartoons by disney

  • lol volcano eruption Duck and cover

  • Lol your so screwed any way! Wouldn;t you just love to go back and laugh at their nieve precautions.

  • Yea the best thing to do if fiery Armageddon is coming is to wrap a newspaper round your head! FFS. Best advice is sit down, put your head between your legs, and kiss your arse goodbye.

  • duck,duck,duck,cover, GOOSE! :D

  • lol, you all know the atomic bomb, and be ready when it comes, whe hopes it never comes, but it could

    that made my day

  • note at 3:49 those are CANADIANS we were youre eyes and eyes if it wasnt for us you'd have 5 mins to get safe instead of 4 hours how do you like Canada now eh?

  • too bad ivan never really nuked us and it was just paranoia

  • yeah but you have to admit we did help you even if it was just paanoia

  • yeah i guess

  • No there not, you can clearly see their Civil Defense armbands.

  • Ok, sorry my mistake, but you must admit, Canada did aid in the security of the U.S

  • Yes they did, you are correct that without Canada warning time would be more sudden. Thank God for NORAD!

  • w00t NORAD!

  • This must be brought back. You most BELIEVE AND OBEY the authorities.

    Fuck islam.

  • u rock.

  • oh god i love fear mongering

  • To bad we didn't have Vault-Tec.

  • this film was in no way an "educational device", if anything it was propaganda, the light theme was to trick people into thinking they would save themselves from the bomb, it was a device to try to alleviate terror of the atomic bomb, these people had no idea they would be absolutely defenseless against an atomic device, this film was just to trick the American people into being confident, keeping them from going paranoid and letting them know how powerless they where against an atomic bomb.

  • i think idea was to stop people from being lowered into a flase sense of security

  • Actually it was to give the American People something to do. It was created so that when something really did happen, they weren't running around. The whole civil defense idea was to give the public something to do to keep them distracted.

  • For some reason my comment dissapeared. at 4:44 there's a very nice FEDELCODE Model 2. :o

  • u think i shoudl duck and cover?

  • my history teacher said it would be funny to go around with a camera flash to peoples window and watch them duck and panic.

  • i said that exact same thing when we saw this video in history class! XD

  • I liked how that guy jumps off his Tractor at 8:17.

  • @Siren1000T1 I love it how his head was next to the tire.

  • quote from my history teacher on this matter "your supposed to duck and cover so you dont see the burning bodies and destruction around you, if your gonna die, might as well not see everyone else do it too"

  • I was in grade school living in Iowa during the 50's. I can remember practicing the duck under your desk routine during class. I thought I was pretty safe living in the Midwest. Only later in life did I realize that the Strategic Air Command down the road a piece in Omaha would have been a prime target for Russian missiles. Anything within a 2 to 3 hundred mile radius would probably been vaporized.

  • I grew up in CA and we ducked under the desks for earthquake drills.

I think we heard the Civil Defense siren test every Friday until the early 80s

  • Yes, curling into a ball when an ATOMIC BOMB goes off is really going to save you.

  • VIDEO UPDATE: If you see the flash, it's already too late.

  • well dude what we have to realize is that back then thy didnt know what to do if there was an atom bomb dropped.

ps: if you see the flash your totally screwed.

  • Are you people that dense? This was more or less to make people feel safe and protected, as much as could be expected during an atomic attack. Modern generations are insensitive idiots, as the majority of you are proving, American and non-American alike.

  • as fucking useless as telling people today that they should buy duct tape and plastic wrap, and that they shouldn't take liquids on a plane.

  • At least it's something. What would you do, stand there?

  • I think I'd at least find a fridge like in the new Indiana Jones movie.. and hope it's the right sort.. which I doubt. Or find some bomb shelter nearby. Those are better tips. Instead of this false atempt of security and missdirection.

By the way.. nice logo at the end eh? :P

  • This was such a sad time..i would hate to grow up at that time and have to "Duck and cover" What america did was terrible to and its a amazing that were almost in peace of Japan! i got to meet a survior and she toutched my heart!!!

  • Atleast we'll survive long enough for the Radiation Poisoning, considering the tractor doesn't get us first.

  • Yes he whould have been fried!

  • duck and cover in a bus that,s smart dumbass

  • This is six years after Hiroshima... and the government could do this?

Makes me appreciate the power of the media we have these days...

...and yes, perhaps this could have saved a few people, but what's important is that they're ridiculously minimizing the threat, obviously in order to keep the public happy about the Cold War. And that's just terrible.

  • holly shit i need some paper

yeah like a pease of paper is going to protect you from your atoms geting distroyed

  • Yeah! Protect your face with a newpaper...It's the same like you do nothing...

  • Americanos noiados.... duck and cover from yourself!!

  • ataboy tony :P

  • ZOMG NUKE

EVERYONE GET A PIECE OF PAPER

  • ...the world is save at last... good old cold war times. Was easy back then... duck and cover. Wondering if this will work at the appearence pf my Ex-gf, too. hope so

  • a piece of paper will save you from an atomic explosin.

    bullshit

  • put your head between your knees... and kiss your ass goodbye

  • it's amazing how much protection is afforded by ones' own arse.

  • I think we should all jump up in front of a wall at the moment of the flash, leaving a permanent black shadow on the wall...Years later people will come along and say "MY GOD, THESE PEOPLE COULD LEVITATE!"

  • Yeah, if you are gonna get nuked might as well do it quick.

    Radiation poisoning sucks.

  • @pmgodfrey Hell yeah.

  • - @SupaBriMan26 -

I love what Lewis Black said about the nuclear Holocaust.

"The adults in the community said that I can protect myself from a fire fuck ball......by hiding...under wood. I'm hiding under kindling. Maybe I can get some sticks SO I CAN BURN FASTER.

And I thought, wow. If this was a real attack, when the all clear sounded I could get up and go out to the playground AND MELT."

  • Someone tell me were to get this song LawL.

  • How come they always used those stupid close harmonies back then? And what's with that bizarre screeching sound right after they sing Duck: i.e "Duck....screeech.....and cover"?

  • Jihad monkey?

And it's largely psychological, though it MAY help if you are far enough from the hypocenter. (There are too many variables to take into account to say that it would help you anywhere)

  • that civil defense worker looks kinda shady..........

  • WHY DOES THAT MONKEY HAVE A FIRE CRACKER?!?!?!?!?

and ducking under a desk isnt gonna save me from an a-bomb....if it knocks down houses....im skrewed.

  • THE PAPER IT DOES NOTHING!!

  • hmmm that small wall in the park looked safe

  • Next time we're going to be attacked by atomic bombs, i'll remember to always have my newspaper with me to cover my head when i duck...

  • HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! ;)

  • Poor monkey LOL

  • wen a bomb hits ill remember to duck so the tremendous heat and radiation just pass above me n ill be just fine lol

  • Actually the duck & cover method will help if you are far enough away from the epicenter. There are three parts to the blast (excluding the aftermath). The first is the radiation, and this is followed by a shock wave. The shock wave is divided into two parts, a positive peak pressure and impulse, followed by a lesser negative peak pressure and impulse. The shock-wave impact & debris are the only things you can avoid by

"duck & cover". Close exposure to the radiation will instantly cook you.

  • I think, the purpose of that movie is a psychological thing. People should think they can protect themselves against that danger.

  • Yes, because whenever something comes to hurt America, we always take the defense. Wow, how the American spirit is shining in this!

  • i think they lied to everyone back then to not cause panic because, what if they told everyone the truth about nukes and freaked them out but a real nuke never came?

  • This is a perfect example of how the gov't. lies to it's citizens. This would have been absolutely USELESS and they knew it, but didn't bother informing us. There is no telling what they are lying to us about now. Same crap, diffeent day.

  • So you'd rather they tell children that they will enevitably be burned to less than charred skeletons in the most painful and last experience of their lives?

  • Of course not, MoonlMover. That was a rediculous comment...but it was irresponsible to outright LIE about this. It continues today.

  • Actually, this technique would provide at least a minimum of protection against flying debris in the initial concussive blast. The heat, fire, and radiation that followed moments later? Not so much. But it's not a COMPLETE lie. It's intended to ameliorate worries among children and would result, at least marginally, in fewer injuries.

  • The biggest thing that people today don't understand is that 1951 was at the very beginning of the nuclear age. There were no Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles with their practical Hydrogen Bombs. Atom Bombs were relatively small and delivered by airplanes -- not unlike what Japan experienced in 1945. No one said that one could survive the immediate fireball, but MUCH of a city would experience the destruction of the edges -- and many towns would just get the blast effects.

  • By far, in 1945, MOST of Japan survived the TWO atomic blasts. MORE people would have survived there had they any idea of methods of escaping blast and fallout effects. This was only six years later. The technology was not yet to the point that it got to just twenty years later -- when, unfortunately, it could have resulted in the extinction of life across the entire world. This was a reasonable response to the threat then.

  • For years I have shown this in my college history classes. Students always laugh. They have difficulty accepting that people were serious took this because, rightly, they see through the illogic and basic lunacy of the film's premise. Thank goodness for counterweights like Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove."

  • What if the brick wall in front of you falls over on you?

  • its funny now but back then...

  • WTF?

  • duck and cover, becuase your shirts are going to protect you from fire and radiation. bullshit

  • these videos were meant to control a panicky nation scared of commie nukes. Also on the outer edges of the blast radius this would have saved lives maybe not the shirt but the whole duck and cover crap.

  • This film has been ridiculed for years, and is very easy to do this post cold war. But it's important to keep in mind it was done for children, and in my view it was good guidance that if followed would have minimized burns and physical injuries from a nuclear blast.

The aftermath of any nuclear war would have been horrible, to a level depending on how much of the country was hit, but anyone's outcome would have been improved by minimizing their initial injuries.

  • If you're close enough to recieve "burns and physical injuries" from the blast directly, you've already recieved enough radiation that you have next to no chance of surviving. Would you rather die outright, OR, die a horrible, agonizing, prolonged death afterwards? I choose to NOT "duck and cover" and get it over quickly.

  • I know, most people think that, but it's the reverse - blast and heat dangers would go much farther out than initial radiation would and could last for quite a while -- fas dot org has good reference information on this if you're interested. For somebody that stayed exposed outside, it wouldn't be painless or even quick unless they were close enough to the blast. This is terrible stuff to think about and of course I'm very glad such a war never happened.

  • 7:14 to 8:06 appears in the tv of the videogame Prey.

  • People felt they had to live this way because of a handful of violent males, posturing and threatening one another, hence the cold war. Films like these show us just how insane patriarchy is and how this violence is justified and normalized in everyday life. Nothing about patriarchy is ever normal or natural, however.

  • That'll work.....then you can survive and hipity-hop out into the wonderland of radiation, waste and charred corpses. Sounds like a good time.

  • I love how when the stick of dynamite explodes, the monkey is just gone.

  • "If there is a warning, you will hear it before the bomb explodes".

Because after it explodes, you'll be dead.

  • This is the very reason why Americans are so paranoid. Living in a such world where your governemnt prepared children for Red's attack in such way they have emotional problems all their lives, no wonder why most of them are so paranoid these days. Hell, I would be too if I had to learn as a youngster what A-bomb could do to you.

  • What I love is how they show a building collapse and then tell you to hide under a blanket...

  • AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA!! That was hallarious. Nothing beats ole American cartoons that kept public at bay.

"oh look an a-bomb! let's all just sit here and wait!"

    Hahah... nice one.

  • haha people back then were freakin idiots!

  • i actually just asked my dad, and he said that they didn;t beleive this. they knew they would die. its just the goverment trying to use propaganda. not really well though.

  • Well I know that the government and most people knew that it wouldn't work but I guess people just wanted to believe it worked to make them feel safer I guess.

  • 6:12, the kid smacks his head, and again in the bike scene.

  • If you duck and cover you will die too...

  • Well if the true effects of the h-bomb was shown to the public on tv there would be widespread panic. The scientists and military already knew humans would vaporize or be torched alive.

  • A newspaper isn't going to save you from atomic warfare. If anything, your head will probably catch on fire.

  • Man, what a time that was...
