  • Classic Queens NY Girl

  • Etherl Merman Is My Idol!

  • I love JUICE!

  • Comment removed

  • Amazing

  • La Merman was THE Rose. Others were good but she had the verve and the voice!!!!

  • 18 people will never have he world on a plate

  • I like the duet with Buster Bluth a smidge more.

  • I wish Ethel's voice would have sex with my own voice so that some of the greatness that was hers will then be mine o.O

  • I just love her singing! Shes got i amazig voice! I love that sound that gargling sound!

  • I like the Glee version by Chris Colfer much more.

BTW @apsara81cloud you should add him to your list of people who also sang the song.

I don't really like her singing style, that back-of-the-throat-gargling sound (eg 1:46) is just not one that I think should be in a song. Of course, if you like it, then lucky for you here's a song for you.

  • @Voesyy I feel like it's a perfect Broadway voice. It's not mainstream, but it's obviously not supposed to be, especially if we're talking current day's mainstream.

  • @Voesyy you douche. YOU YOUNG DOUCHE. I am tired and SICK of these Glee fans coming to the original clips and saying they like Glee better. TRUST me, we will not be listening to Glee in 30-40 years, we will STILL be listening to Ethel, Judy, Liza, Barbra, Patti, Bernadette... You won't though... You'll be in a soup line.

  • charlotte linlin

  • @dondondodo Random, but I know what you're talking about. You were probably sent here the same way I was. :)

  • @blubberbotbeans6978 ;D probably so :P apforums?

  • @dondondodo yeah :P

  • @blubberbotbeans6978 WEWT OP FANS 4EVER

  • Had this album growing up though it's before my time.. Ehel could really belt one out!! Awesome performance that will stick in my head forever! Great post!

  • Oh, i loved her scene in Airplane! She is the best.

  • The best!

  • Lucille Bluth sent me.

  • @zitaspo Best ever scene in that show!!!

  • ernest borgnine deserves a special place in heaven for being able to last a week with this voice.

  • wtf she was horrible!

  • like this if god brought you here

  • Still the best. There is an ELECTRICITY there that blows the others away.

  • Tyne Daley's performance of Rose is really underrated.

  • I think Merman is amazing but for me Bernadette Peters really redefined Mama Rose. Merman created the iconic Rose, but Peters made her real for me.

  • She's untouchable!!! Used to work as an usherette at the NYS Theater in Lincoln Center and saw her 8 times a week in Annie Get Your Gun!!! What a talent. WOW!!! Never saw enyone like her since!!!

  • No one can touch this performance!

  • heard this on ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT

  • im here because my school is doing annie and one of my parts is star to be. in the script, it describes her as a "would be ethel merman type girl." i couldn't be more excited.

  • Glee brought me here sorry @madspyro

  • que bien la arreglaron en glee para que coincidiera con la historia

  • MAMA'S LETTING LOOSE Arrested Development yo :D fav song

  • who the fuck cares who and what brought you here! just enjoy this damn amazing song and learn to accept that people love different things! some love glee and some love Arrested Development .... DEAL WITH IT!!! get over yourselves!

  • Once this woman wrapped her tonsils round a role or a song... forget the rest. Even Mary Martin could not follow her in Annie get Your Gun. Of course Miss M. was no Nellie Forbush but... what she had was what Garland had... a direct route to your fast-beating heart. That voice cut through steel and all nonsense. Sing out Louise... no one ever had to say that to Ethel.

  • Thumbs up if you didn't need either Glee OR Arrested Development to bring you here, but have points of reference outside of the last ten years.

  • i am speechless...Ethel merman is amazing!

  • Airplane! brought me here

  • The One and Only Ethel!!!

  • My top 5 Mama Roses: 1. Ethel Merman, 2. Rosalind Russel, 3. Tyne Daly, 4. Angela Lansbury, and 5. Bette Midler. Special mention and a close #6 to Chris Colfer, because he brought Gypsy back to popular attention and gave the best turn any 20-year-old male contralto could dream of. ♥

  • LOL Buster! "I don't even want to smell like mother anymore" Love Arrested Development!

  • It will always be Ethel Merman's. No one can surpass hers. Tyne Daly's version is very good and so is Angela Lansbury's. Bernadette Peters's and Patti LuPone's, not so much, not that they aren't great in other roles. Catch Bernadette Peters in Follies if you can.

  • I don't care who covers this, it will ALWAYS be Merman's.

  • All good performers, but this is IT.. This is THE ONE the Ultimate... the voice, the soul,, she just IS IT!!!

  • surely ethel herself brought me here!

  • Bette owns my heart

  • like this if you dont give two shits who brought you here

  • Er, how about "Thumbs up if it doesn't matter what brought you here as long as you enjoy the song"?

  • Gypsy belongs to Ethel Merman. Always has, always will.

  • Singing by Kurt, it takes another dimension...

    Love Chris <3

  • Glee! Brought me here! :D!

    Kurt Hummel!

I love how Chris Colfer sings this song

But this one is way cool! too!

  • Well. I prefer Kurt singing that song. D: His voice is powerful.

  • Umm, thumbs up if just the beauty of this musical brought you here?

  • Which year was this?

  • The matters of which or who should not be at debate here. The song goes on and without arrested development or glee, so many fewer would be linking there way here. So we should all be grateful to Miss Merman jaw dropping performance as head way and inspiration for those to come!

    Peace Love and Taco Greece

  • The matters of which or who should not be at debate here. The song goes on and without arrested development or glee, so many fewer would be linking there way here. So we should all be grateful to Miss Merman jaw dropping performance as head way and inspiration for those to come!

    Peace Love and Taco Greece

  • How do all these people who came here for arrested development know the song was also on glee? They are both good shows, just for different audiences

  • I like this version and lizas and bettes and Bernadettes and not so much lupone, it depends on the recording.

All in all Ethel did a good job!

  • i got brought here just cause i wanted an audition song....

  • OH MY GOD PEOPLE! SHUT UP ABOUT GLEE!!! THIS IS ETHEL'S SONG, LET'S LEAVE IT AT THAT!!!

  • amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! awesome!!!!!

  • i studied this for drama class and fell in love i like this version but personally i adore bette midler and her rendition

  • Sorry but Glee brought me here =)

  • Glee brought me to watch Gypsy... Both Kurt and Ethel are amazing, but Ethel is far better!!!

  • thumbs up if you don't care who brought who here. In the end we're all listening to the amazing ethel merman.

  • Glee brought you to the queen bee. Those drones. ALL HAIL ETHEL!!!!

  • Glee

  • Glee brought me here. But it's alright. I'm here aren't I?

  • the first lady of the stage the one the only the Merm

  • RIP Arthur Laurents

  • Thumbs up if the Musical Gypsy brought you here and not Glee or Arrested Development smh...

  • I love Glee but it's version doesn't come remotely close to the brilliance and power of the original.

  • oh my god people! This is the land before Glee. get over it. jeez its like you can't stop obsessing over how Kurt sang on Glee... uh HELLO? He didn't originally sing this!

  • @mayrita247 I liked the part when you said Glee.

  • Normally, I like the original best, but in this case, I prefer Bernadette Peters' version. She does more with it, I think.

  • Nothing on the divine miss M, but definately enjoyable

  • Hairspray actually brought me here! I'm playing Edna and at the end of the number "The Big Doll House" I belt out the line "FOR MEEEEE" and I was told to watch this cause its a reference to it

  • you shouldnt need glee, arrested development, or any other show to bring you here

  • Love kurt...

  • @Whatdidyoudotome same! I prefer the Glee version, although I wish it was longer.

  • I have heard all of her stuff . This is Ethel at her absolute best. if you can't appreciate what she is doing here, then Ethel will never win you over. I just cannot imagine what playing the lead in Gypsy, say 4- 5 performances a week, must do to a performer and their pipes.

  • @BTURNER1961 she was the BEST.

  • Oh Christopher Colfer.

  • they only put half the song on glee because it was relevant, the other half would have been nonsense in glee ;D

  • Sorry but i prefer Glee version (kurt), but this is cool too xD

  • According to Sondheim's book, "Rose's Turn" came about as a result of a time crunch. Director Jerome Robbins wanted to choreograph a ballet in which Rose encounters everyone from her past that shows how she became who she became. He didn't have time to choreograph the sequence, so Sondheim came up with the initial idea of a series of reprises where she comes to the realization that she has at the end. Sondheim writes that it's unfortunate the world will never know Ethel Merman in a ballet.

  • So I'm new to this whole scene... Glee did NOT send me hear, I was actually looking up some old Bernadette Peters' songs and came upon her singing this and I was just blown away. I read that Ethel originated it but man... Bernadette was like possessed when she sang this song... it brings shivers down my spine...

  • Ethel Merman's version is by far the very best! No contest!

  • sorry, but i have to said that i like this song, since kurt of glee sang it xD

  • I think the best ones I saw were Liza Minelli, Patti LuPone and Rosalind Russell. I would absolutely LOVE it if someone was able to find a recording of Dorothy Louden singing this song.

  • why are people talking about glee...chris colfers rendition lasted like 2 minutes and sucked in my opinion. if you think the glee version was better than ethel then you have no business in the world of theater.

  • The glee song starts at 2:20 I say this because I was so

disappointed and thought that this was not the song that i hear on glee(:

  • my dad has seen gypsy with: ethel merman, bette midler, bernadette peters, and patti lu pone. He says that there is no competition, Ethel Merman is the best!!!!!!

  • everything's coming up milhouse!!

  • Kurt (Chris) =P .... did better..sorry...

((Usually originals are better =P xD))

  • Glee sucks, go away!

  • fuck glee. Arrested development (The second greatest TV show ever created) brought me here.

  • If you had to be brought here by a TV show, I feel sorry for you.

  • @rootbeeronbroadway so true

  • this guy is obsessed with roses turn or he was born in the 50s in new york cause all his videos are roses turn

  • glee sent me here

  • Chris Colfer does a great rendition of this!

  • I do love Glee and it's version but you can't beat Ethel Merman, her voice is so memorable and just.... amazing!

  • Her voice is like nails.

  • I prefer Glee's version :D

  • broadway brought me here way before any tv show

  • @tutor323gurrl Umm thank you. Right there with ya. It's sad that people haven't heard about this stuff until it was mentioned on some tv show. Bunch of uncultured people. I bet none of these people can name another show Ethel Merman was even in

  • @KeepItGayStageNazi Shouldn't you be happy that it's being brought to the public eye at all?

Isn't it a GOOD thing people are seeing it on a show and being curious as to the original?

'Cause I think its amazing when people who would have never found it on their own discover just how amazing any of it is, through a TV show or otherwise.

  • @RabbitVasque Of course I'm happy people are being introduced to it. I'm just bragging that I'm nerdy enough to have known about stuff like this without the aid of television. Although knowing stuff like this makes tv more entertaining. Especially Family Guy. SOOOOOOOO many musical theater references. No need to get so defensive btw

  • @KeepItGayStageNazi Not defensive in the least, since I'd seen the 1962 movie adaption years ago, and therefore not the target of your comments to begin with. I was thrilled when Glee used half of Rose's Turn.

I'm always excited when more people like things I like, no matter how they're turned on =)

  • @RabbitVasque I am also glad that people are finding out about this stuff, I just feel more awesome that I didn't need TV shows. Although, it may just be the people who I hang out with, or the "community" of people I talk to online, but it seems like musical theater is making a comeback!

  • She kind of sounds like Pearl from SpongeBob LOL

  • There has been talk that BarBara Streisand is going to be Rose in yet another upcoming revival...can not wait! Ethel will always be Rose, no doubt, but to see babs back doing her thing, well, WOW!!....Not sure they have found GypsyRoseLee, but I think Anne Hathaway would be perrrrfect....

  • Oh BRITTY I have to agree...Ethel IS Rose!

  • God Smiled.............Merman Sang............everything that followed was second billing

  • 14 people don't have it!

  • @MaZiPaN3000 I think so... But I agree.

  • thumbs up if Arrested Development brought you here, not Glee.

  • @MadSpyro LOVE THAT SHOW.

  • @MadSpyro how bout if you actually seen it on Broadway or the movie with Natalie Wood

  • @MaZiPaN3000 yes

  • Arrested Development brought people here WAY before Glee did

  • @MalchiorXapian Bigger thumbs up if you came here independently.

  • @MalchiorXapian Fuck Glee. It's all about Arrested Development.lol

  • I can't ever decide who is my favorite Rose...Ethel, Bette, Bernadette, Patti...

I got to see Patti, and she just knocked my socks off.

Also, am I alone in waiting for Liza to play her?

  • @theatrebritty I have been a Bernadette fangirl since second grade (when the teacher showed Into the Woods in class, and I went home and watched it obsessively for days), but this is probably the one time I would pick Lady LuPone. There's something about her Rose that's so perfect for me. Not that Bernadette isn't fantastic, but Patti's is wow...

  • @rebeccawesome I think vocally, Bernadette's got it. I think Patti had all the built up bitterness and anguish at never being able to live her dreams down pat. She just became Rose...it was such a moving performance.

  • Oh, Ethel, no one will ever come close to that brass.

  • I only know about this song because of Glee, and I have to say, it's cool to get to hear the original too :D

  • I've liked Bette Midler's the best because it's just scarily accurate to someone who's facing the fact that she's deluded herself and all of her armour is coming down. I am a huge huge fan of Ethel. She set so many bars and created so many models in her career. I have to say I find this vocalization of Ethel's a bit "squacky" though. I like Bette.

  • lovely

  • OHHHH when kurt said "GET OFF OF MY RUNWAY!" I just thought that was kurt bein kurt but now i now it's from this ;)

  • thumbs up if you found this vid searching for the Glee version xd

  • Love her, love this song. but I keep pictuiring Iago from Aladdin when i hear this.

  • I preferr Chris' version because, at least for me, it has so much more feeling to it, I mean, when I hear Chris singing it, I can feel all the hurt and anger but this is pretty plain.

  • @waytotheend4 She sounds pretty hurt and angry to me!

  • @waytotheend4

Same. I really love his version. I think it's better

    >.< nobody hurt me.

  • To my untrained ear this is the better version at least in vocal terms, has the perfect timing, Patti's Lupone version is good for her acting, her anger is so palpable and it reflects a bit too much on her vocals, Bernardette Peters does an excellent Job too both vocally and acting wise, as for Glee's version, it wasn't better or worse, just different, Chris Colfer needs to live a bit longer for him to be able to grasp the necessary feeling for this piece, but he did a good job too

  • She sounds completely fucking insane. I love it. :'D

  • This song gives me LIFE

  • I could listen to this over and over-in fact I am-and I'm just blown away. It's the first time I ever heard her sing and her voice is so clear and distinct while singing, she makes all the so-called present day "divas" I've heard sound thick and mushy.

  • i love more much glee version . chris is amazing for this

  • I know, it can be annoying when people say "oh that songs from Glee!" and they've heard the Glee version before the original. But I love Glee, and it's wonderful that they're bringing back such brilliant songs.

  • I love Ethel Merman so very very much. And Rose was basically THE ROLE for her, but my favourite Mama Rose will always be Bette Midler. That was also THE ROLE for Bette. This is one of my top five dream roles. A weird thing for a 16 year old to say isn't it :P <3

  • @winnconway

This was my dream role when I was three. XD. I do not judge at all!

My favorite is Patti Lupone cause she captured the psychotic and desperate side of it really well. I love that each person had more prominent feature of mama rose that the others didn't have. Bette was sympathetic and more funny, Ethel was more demanding, etc.

  • @broadwaymelody33 Patti Lupone's rendition is my favorite version as well and you make an excellent point about how each actress highlighted a different aspect of Rose than their predecessors/successors

  • 1:46 - 2:03 is Lucille #1 on Arrested Development when Buster moves out LOL

  • @mulusonic LMAO! And when Lucille #1 is taken to rehab Buster is home alone singing to it. :)

  • Save the Gypsy boy!!!

  • The gal had pipes, there's no denying - a veritable one-man band...

  • LUPONEEEEEEEEEEEe

  • I miss true tough broads! LOVE this.

  • Ethel is the only Rose who did the show WITHOUT A MICROPHONE. Keep that in mind when comparing her with later performers who could vary the volume for effect and didn't have to worry about being heard in the last row!

  • @filmmekker Ethel is the only Rose who did the show WITHOUT A MICROPHONE

You said... I can too, but I am not a liberal lunatic, so Broadway put people FAR LESS talented than me on stages that I belonged on.

So much for FREE SPEECH on Broadway.

  • @filmmekker really?/ did she not use a mic??

  • @foreveremo

Nope. They didn't start using mics on Broadway until the 1960s. But Ethel started singing back in the 1920s, before it became common to use microphones while singing. Back then, if you didn't sing opera you had to belt in order for everyone in the house to hear you. Hence why she belted all her songs. I don't know if she ever used a mic in the shows she did after this, though.

  • @foreveremo She didn't use a mic in any of her shows. They weren't used until the mid-1960's. She had a voice that could easily be heard in the back of the theater. They had to in those days.

  • muh muh muh.. m..m... muh... mama?

  • @Grayfaces do u know who is even saying that? whoever it is sounds very unstable

  • Lucille is home alone

  • I cant pick a favorite. obviously glee did it justice but nothing done on glee can top broadway. ever.

  • thumbs up if the glee people sent you here

  • hahaha this is a cool song she puts a lot of humor into her singing.

  • i like Bernadette better. Merman's was good but Peters was more emotional

  • Glee's version is really good, Chris Colfer did an amazing job. But I gotta say, this is freaking sweet... tops Glee's version by a long shot.

  • I'm happy that Glee exposes younger audiences to material like this. :-)

  • a powerful voice of her time !

  • i respect this, but I think i like the glee version better, i dont know but this one was like in your face.

  • @chocolate674 So was the character. That was the point of Ethel's depiction. The performers in glee have neither the responsibility nor privilege of confining a number into the parameters of a play script and its characterization for the stage. They have more liberty.
