Peters, Lupone and Midler all did a superb job but as far as I am concerned La Merman was the greatest Rose of all. There is some raw pain and rage in her rendition that no other performer has been able to express that convincingly.
I like the Glee version by Chris Colfer much more.
BTW @apsara81cloud you should add him to your list of people who also sang the song.
I don't really like her singing style, that back-of-the-throat-gargling sound (eg 1:46) is just not one that I think should be in a song. Of course, if you like it, then lucky for you here's a song for you.
@Voesyy I feel like it's a perfect Broadway voice. It's not mainstream, but it's obviously not supposed to be, especially if we're talking current day's mainstream.
@Voesyy you douche. YOU YOUNG DOUCHE. I am tired and SICK of these Glee fans coming to the original clips and saying they like Glee better. TRUST me, we will not be listening to Glee in 30-40 years, we will STILL be listening to Ethel, Judy, Liza, Barbra, Patti, Bernadette... You won't though... You'll be in a soup line.
Had this album growing up though it's before my time.. Ehel could really belt one out!! Awesome performance that will stick in my head forever! Great post!
She's untouchable!!! Used to work as an usherette at the NYS Theater in Lincoln Center and saw her 8 times a week in Annie Get Your Gun!!! What a talent. WOW!!! Never saw enyone like her since!!!
im here because my school is doing annie and one of my parts is star to be. in the script, it describes her as a "would be ethel merman type girl." i couldn't be more excited.
who the fuck cares who and what brought you here! just enjoy this damn amazing song and learn to accept that people love different things! some love glee and some love Arrested Development .... DEAL WITH IT!!! get over yourselves!
Once this woman wrapped her tonsils round a role or a song... forget the rest. Even Mary Martin could not follow her in Annie get Your Gun. Of course Miss M. was no Nellie Forbush but... what she had was what Garland had... a direct route to your fast-beating heart. That voice cut through steel and all nonsense. Sing out Louise... no one ever had to say that to Ethel.
My top 5 Mama Roses: 1. Ethel Merman, 2. Rosalind Russel, 3. Tyne Daly, 4. Angela Lansbury, and 5. Bette Midler. Special mention and a close #6 to Chris Colfer, because he brought Gypsy back to popular attention and gave the best turn any 20-year-old male contralto could dream of. ♥
It will always be Ethel Merman's. No one can surpass hers. Tyne Daly's version is very good and so is Angela Lansbury's. Bernadette Peters's and Patti LuPone's, not so much, not that they aren't great in other roles. Catch Bernadette Peters in Follies if you can.
The matters of which or who should not be at debate here. The song goes on and without arrested development or glee, so many fewer would be linking there way here. So we should all be grateful to Miss Merman jaw dropping performance as head way and inspiration for those to come!
The matters of which or who should not be at debate here. The song goes on and without arrested development or glee, so many fewer would be linking there way here. So we should all be grateful to Miss Merman jaw dropping performance as head way and inspiration for those to come!
oh my god people! This is the land before Glee. get over it. jeez its like you can't stop obsessing over how Kurt sang on Glee... uh HELLO? He didn't originally sing this!
Hairspray actually brought me here! I'm playing Edna and at the end of the number "The Big Doll House" I belt out the line "FOR MEEEEE" and I was told to watch this cause its a reference to it
I have heard all of her stuff . This is Ethel at her absolute best. if you can't appreciate what she is doing here, then Ethel will never win you over. I just cannot imagine what playing the lead in Gypsy, say 4- 5 performances a week, must do to a performer and their pipes.
According to Sondheim's book, "Rose's Turn" came about as a result of a time crunch. Director Jerome Robbins wanted to choreograph a ballet in which Rose encounters everyone from her past that shows how she became who she became. He didn't have time to choreograph the sequence, so Sondheim came up with the initial idea of a series of reprises where she comes to the realization that she has at the end. Sondheim writes that it's unfortunate the world will never know Ethel Merman in a ballet.
So I'm new to this whole scene... Glee did NOT send me hear, I was actually looking up some old Bernadette Peters' songs and came upon her singing this and I was just blown away. I read that Ethel originated it but man... Bernadette was like possessed when she sang this song... it brings shivers down my spine...
I think the best ones I saw were Liza Minelli, Patti LuPone and Rosalind Russell. I would absolutely LOVE it if someone was able to find a recording of Dorothy Louden singing this song.
why are people talking about glee...chris colfers rendition lasted like 2 minutes and sucked in my opinion. if you think the glee version was better than ethel then you have no business in the world of theater.
my dad has seen gypsy with: ethel merman, bette midler, bernadette peters, and patti lu pone. He says that there is no competition, Ethel Merman is the best!!!!!!
@tutor323gurrl Umm thank you. Right there with ya. It's sad that people haven't heard about this stuff until it was mentioned on some tv show. Bunch of uncultured people. I bet none of these people can name another show Ethel Merman was even in
@KeepItGayStageNazi Shouldn't you be happy that it's being brought to the public eye at all?
Isn't it a GOOD thing people are seeing it on a show and being curious as to the original?
'Cause I think its amazing when people who would have never found it on their own discover just how amazing any of it is, through a TV show or otherwise.
@RabbitVasque Of course I'm happy people are being introduced to it. I'm just bragging that I'm nerdy enough to have known about stuff like this without the aid of television. Although knowing stuff like this makes tv more entertaining. Especially Family Guy. SOOOOOOOO many musical theater references. No need to get so defensive btw
@KeepItGayStageNazi Not defensive in the least, since I'd seen the 1962 movie adaption years ago, and therefore not the target of your comments to begin with. I was thrilled when Glee used half of Rose's Turn.
I'm always excited when more people like things I like, no matter how they're turned on =)
@RabbitVasque I am also glad that people are finding out about this stuff, I just feel more awesome that I didn't need TV shows. Although, it may just be the people who I hang out with, or the "community" of people I talk to online, but it seems like musical theater is making a comeback!
There has been talk that BarBara Streisand is going to be Rose in yet another upcoming revival...can not wait! Ethel will always be Rose, no doubt, but to see babs back doing her thing, well, WOW!!....Not sure they have found GypsyRoseLee, but I think Anne Hathaway would be perrrrfect....
@theatrebritty I have been a Bernadette fangirl since second grade (when the teacher showed Into the Woods in class, and I went home and watched it obsessively for days), but this is probably the one time I would pick Lady LuPone. There's something about her Rose that's so perfect for me. Not that Bernadette isn't fantastic, but Patti's is wow...
@rebeccawesome I think vocally, Bernadette's got it. I think Patti had all the built up bitterness and anguish at never being able to live her dreams down pat. She just became Rose...it was such a moving performance.
I've liked Bette Midler's the best because it's just scarily accurate to someone who's facing the fact that she's deluded herself and all of her armour is coming down. I am a huge huge fan of Ethel. She set so many bars and created so many models in her career. I have to say I find this vocalization of Ethel's a bit "squacky" though. I like Bette.
I preferr Chris' version because, at least for me, it has so much more feeling to it, I mean, when I hear Chris singing it, I can feel all the hurt and anger but this is pretty plain.
To my untrained ear this is the better version at least in vocal terms, has the perfect timing, Patti's Lupone version is good for her acting, her anger is so palpable and it reflects a bit too much on her vocals, Bernardette Peters does an excellent Job too both vocally and acting wise, as for Glee's version, it wasn't better or worse, just different, Chris Colfer needs to live a bit longer for him to be able to grasp the necessary feeling for this piece, but he did a good job too
I could listen to this over and over-in fact I am-and I'm just blown away. It's the first time I ever heard her sing and her voice is so clear and distinct while singing, she makes all the so-called present day "divas" I've heard sound thick and mushy.
I know, it can be annoying when people say "oh that songs from Glee!" and they've heard the Glee version before the original. But I love Glee, and it's wonderful that they're bringing back such brilliant songs.
I love Ethel Merman so very very much. And Rose was basically THE ROLE for her, but my favourite Mama Rose will always be Bette Midler. That was also THE ROLE for Bette. This is one of my top five dream roles. A weird thing for a 16 year old to say isn't it :P <3
This was my dream role when I was three. XD. I do not judge at all!
My favorite is Patti Lupone cause she captured the psychotic and desperate side of it really well. I love that each person had more prominent feature of mama rose that the others didn't have. Bette was sympathetic and more funny, Ethel was more demanding, etc.
@broadwaymelody33 Patti Lupone's rendition is my favorite version as well and you make an excellent point about how each actress highlighted a different aspect of Rose than their predecessors/successors
Ethel is the only Rose who did the show WITHOUT A MICROPHONE. Keep that in mind when comparing her with later performers who could vary the volume for effect and didn't have to worry about being heard in the last row!
Nope. They didn't start using mics on Broadway until the 1960s. But Ethel started singing back in the 1920s, before it became common to use microphones while singing. Back then, if you didn't sing opera you had to belt in order for everyone in the house to hear you. Hence why she belted all her songs. I don't know if she ever used a mic in the shows she did after this, though.
@foreveremo She didn't use a mic in any of her shows. They weren't used until the mid-1960's. She had a voice that could easily be heard in the back of the theater. They had to in those days.
@chocolate674 So was the character. That was the point of Ethel's depiction. The performers in glee have neither the responsibility nor privilege of confining a number into the parameters of a play script and its characterization for the stage. They have more liberty.

Same. I really love his version. I think it's better

This song gives me LIFE

A weird thing for a 16 year old to say isn't it :P <3
winnconway 1 year ago
@winnconway
This was my dream role when I was three. XD. I do not judge at all!
My favorite is Patti Lupone cause she captured the psychotic and desperate side of it really well. I love that each person had more prominent feature of mama rose that the others didn't have. Bette was sympathetic and more funny, Ethel was more demanding, etc.
broadwaymelody33 1 year ago
@broadwaymelody33 Patti Lupone's rendition is my favorite version as well and you make an excellent point about how each actress highlighted a different aspect of Rose than their predecessors/successors

Ethel is the only Rose who did the show WITHOUT A MICROPHONE. Keep that in mind when comparing her with later performers who could vary the volume for effect and didn't have to worry about being heard in the last row!

@filmmekker Ethel is the only Rose who did the show WITHOUT A MICROPHONE
You said... I can too, but I am not a liberal lunatic, so Broadway put people FAR LESS talented than me on stages that I belonged on.
So much for FREE SPEECH on Broadway.
ugha323a 9 months ago
@filmmekker really?/ did she not use a mic??
foreveremo 9 months ago
@foreveremo
Nope. They didn't start using mics on Broadway until the 1960s. But Ethel started singing back in the 1920s, before it became common to use microphones while singing. Back then, if you didn't sing opera you had to belt in order for everyone in the house to hear you. Hence why she belted all her songs. I don't know if she ever used a mic in the shows she did after this, though.
thesoundofmusic1991 9 months ago 2
@foreveremo She didn't use a mic in any of her shows. They weren't used until the mid-1960's. She had a voice that could easily be heard in the back of the theater. They had to in those days.

Glee's version is really good, Chris Colfer did an amazing job. But I gotta say, this is freaking sweet... tops Glee's version by a long shot.

i respect this, but I think i like the glee version better, i dont know but this one was like in your face.
chocolate674 1 year ago
@chocolate674 So was the character. That was the point of Ethel's depiction. The performers in glee have neither the responsibility nor privilege of confining a number into the parameters of a play script and its characterization for the stage. They have more liberty.
