  • Pasqualebrow1230 you re on the heaven part

  • My favorite of all times

  • YES!

  • ÄLSKAR DIRE STRAITS & MARK KNOPFLER.........ALWAYS!!!!

  • i like it

  • Even 240p cannot hinder the greatness that is Mark Knopfler.

  • Right! I am on the weird part of Youtube again.

  • just look at sultans of swing live in basel 1992.

  • When I heard this for the first time, I wanted to hear more by Mark and Dire Straits.

Luckily for me, a good friend of mine had Alchemy Live - and I copied it off of him on a TDK D-90 in guitar-forsaken India, of all places, and learned it pretty much note-for-note! LOL!

What great memories - none the worse for it now either!

The eighties were magical! For the first time I think ever, the world felt a kind of kinship and oneness that had been lacking hitherto.

    Brilliant times!

  • Mark Knopfler is the God of Guitar. Give me a HELL YEAH!

    (thumbs up not required)

  • sultans of pop

  • Really, Dire Straits is for sure one of the biggest bands in the world. This is 9:20 of pure genious live song.

  • just the best

  • the band is blowing dicksies all the time lol i heard this

  • Essa música nunca se repete, ouvi-la é como se fosse sempre a primeira vez

  • Mark Knopfler is a Musical Genius! Absolutely love his unique finger picking style that you very rarely see in rock/pop music! definitely one on the best guitarist of all time :)

  • awesome

  • Att schpoogle, if people in east Africa stopped fucking for a few years there would be no famine. If I can't afford to eat why would I have 9 kids!!! Take some responsibility for your own lives and stop begging the west to bail you out again and again

  • @58stoddart

  • Awesome guitar but the Sax is amazing!

  • My 138year old grand-daughter asked me as to why I was going to see Knopfler in Dublin last night was so I just played her that no more questions were needed.

He playedcwith Dylan the O2 in Dublin both were excelant good and all as Knopfler was [and he was magic] Dylan was even better really special night

  • @hunhunter777 you are either a troll or a idiot I cannot tell...maybe both?

  • I love this song

  • goosebumbs..i think this was the best live aid performance....

  • @BigTimeShowdown i dont think you can look past queen to be honest.

  • Bet he regrets wearing the headband !?...

  • If I had one wish it would be to jam with Knopfler, Clapton, Kieth Richards and David Gilmour. I could die a happy man if I jammed with any one of them!

  • Like dire straits, but he is ranked as one of the bst guitarists, funny. He is either not one of the greats or his guitar really isnt that great sounding. Ever heard of matthias jabbs? Check scorpions dynamite live in 83.

  • @535wer ; mmm I think a consensus of opinion is against you. Still we all have our own choices!

  • @535wer I've just listened to Matthias Jabbs. Yes, he's mind blowing but MK is definitely one of a kind. A man in a league of his own. One of the very best guitarists in history.

  • One of the best solos of all time in my opinion.

  • ...STILL AWESOME! Wow, takes me back......MK a god! made me pick up a guitar and still does! ; ]

  • 5:40 rocks

  • 62 people like to watch "The Glee Project"

  • So hard to play at the end there and he makes it look so effortless... That was a classic 80s stadium jam-out!

  • i want that jacket !

  • Mark Knofler, Eric Clapton, Brian May and George Harrison are the four British Apocalypse Knights.

  • @JaUhdeEsparta Er... Gilmour? Page?

  • @mrface19

    I'm Sorry, man,

I totally forgot those legends of guitar, don't know why.

England got the best guitar players factory. There's a big list.

  • GONN 087...Mark Knofler is god!!:)

  • cool song

  • Mark K with his fantastic group of guitar players at Live Aid are superb. The Sultans of Swing is one of the greatest rock and roll coolest songs ever.

  • Dire Straits sempre será , Mark Knopfler é....

  • Going Pickless!

  • ladies & gentlemen on saxophone: tim roth!

  • Godlike Genius!!

  • God Save Mark Knophler*/

  • love this song

  • you get shivers in the dark, when you see Wasim and Waqar :P (Sultans of Swing)

  • It was one of those endless fantastic highlights this day. I'm so happy I could watch, listen, sing and dance the whole day and night long. Live Aid 1985 has become a myth the very same day.

  • The Bollox - no question!

  • dire straits at their best.

  • Gud Morning everyone lets have some dire starits to kick start our day

  • didnt think this song could get better but SAXAPHONE!!

  • seriously dont know how u can dislike this

  • Mark really does make it cry and sing!!

If this is wot hells about i want in!

  • Mark really does make it cry and sing!!

  • hey you, don't be so religious and the other one, don't be so rude. Music is not demonic and religion is not a shit.

  • @luissanchop music is not demonic??? what planet ya on mate?? what the fuck is heavy metal all about then,, half the shit they talk about is about satan ,, led zepplin , ozzy osborne,,metallica,, maryln manson,, daft cunts wi thier fingernails painted black, and upside down crosses for earing, get a grip o yerself,,,

  • i used to love tis music, until i realized,,, the performers are demonic,,, check out phill collins ,,with genisis,,,, performing -mama- live, with all the 6,s behind the stage in disguise ase guitars,,, open your eyes,,,, the music is demonic,,,hypnotizing,,, with hidden symbols,,,, those who can see , take alook at todays music,,, and analyse what it is your bobbin our head too

    idiot ...

  • No only is he a great performer ,but he also writes the songs!!

  • Mark looked fabulous in that clothes he wore.:)

I would die happy if I owned one of his legendary headbands with his signature on it.:D

  • Don't forget Richard Thompson! I think Mark and Richard are two of a kind.Super! Those two are the greatest! And though I have never met Mark I have met Richard several times and he's a great guy and hilarious! Great music! Oh by the way I am a guitarist now for over 35 years (just rounding it off) I never use a pick . found out early Knopfler didn't and developed my style after his.It does make a big difference on speed.

  • Don't forget Richard Thompson! I think Mark and Richard are two of a kind.Super! Those two are the greatest! And though I have never met Mark I have met Richard several times and he's a great guy and hilarious! Great music!

  • hes not using a pick :)

  • One of my all time favorite guitar solos.. Awesome!!!

  • the stuff he does nowadays or last 10years bloody awful jus like pete townsend from the who they jus like thier own music wataload of shit on cd

  • Knophler very rarely used a pick,,,, very interesting.

  • @wrsawy I dont think he was using a pick

  • @djs0793 he never uses a pick... !!! as real guitarists do XD

  • @wrsawy He never used one. That's his own style.

  • very cool post

  • Monster on the guitar.

  • BEST PERFORMANCE EVER

  • Seriously 60 people have no taste in music from the first tune this is a awesome song, Dire Straits is up there with U2, Deep Purple they can stand toe to toe with any band even the Beatles John McCartney admitted they had a awesome sound, how can anyone listen to this song & not like it the first time I heard this song I loved it 7 have never bene disappointment any album.

  • @z5a9

Songs are no better anywhere than this , as good as any

Knopfler is as good as it gets , Steve Howe is an exception THE BEST! guitarist ...

but Knopfler is total class ..

  • @z5a9 John McCartney eh???????? nice proof reading

  • @z5a9 U2 was there too but in terms of "musical complexity" U2 is nothing compares to Dire Straits.

  • Him and Eric Clapton are best friends Just imagine them back in the day smokin a doob and just jammin

  • Ferrarriace123... Awesome comment! ... Love this song!

  • I have to say, Mark's voice isn't my favourite. But the way he plays and seeing the others enjoying themselves on stage overshadows it completely. I'm 15 and I think that rock has been moving steadily downhill since the early 90's. but this music is genuine, enjoyable talent and it's a shame that it's been replaced with all manner of shit that's in the charts these days. Well that's what I think anyway...

  • if you dont tap your feet to this , you ent got no legs

  • @ferrarriace123

it is a foot-tapper - well observed mate

  • @ferrarriace123 you got that right :D

  • watch?v=46CNp89_52Y

  • If I could re-live my life I might - eh - ? relive it as the drummer in Dire Straits! - Mind you.... Perfect Strangers ??? Nawww..... I would still choose Perfect Strangers - The absolutely best musical unit never to make it...Practise did indeed make PERFECT!!! Plus....there was always.......?

  • sax part is a bit new age until Knopfler decides to save the situation and start playing again

  • I'm a massive Dire Straits fan. I wish MK had not allowed any sax on Sultans ever. The Alchemy version - watch that and compare. You want to hear his guitaring in the last few minutes cleanly, not the sax competing with it. I don't know why he allowed it. Other than that, Knopfler is God (maybe higher).

  • Oh, how I wish that I had lived in the 80's.

  • Apart from the fact that Mark wrote/played some of the most beautiful guitar music of the era, did he not also has have the cutest bum? Not sure if it is evident in this video but I think this opinion may be borne out by other aficianidos. What do you think?

  • amazing!!!

  • mark knofle must be god

  • How is it possible I remember today how he played his intro 25 years ago!

  • This makes me reach for the guitar every time I see it. Inspirerd me to buy my first strat !!

  • 59 people must be al-qaeda.

  • @EconoLodge140

72 and you must have paranoia

  • non è la migliore versione di "sultans" dal vivo, mi ricordo che rimasi molto deluso all'epoca del concerto davanti alla tv, sembra che Knopfler fosse decisamente non in forma quel giorno! peccato!

  • Me hace sentir vivo.

  • God Save Mark Knofler .

  • @Gonn087

    I just might, yes

  • chikh avec sa gittar thagelleb

  • Ilsley, Knopfler...best.

  • Always awesome!!!

    Close to heaven!!

  • QUE BUENA MUSICA, QUE TAL GUITARRA LO MAXIMO.. ERES UN GENIO MARK KNOPFLER.. COMO ME HUBIESE GUSTADO ESTAR EN ESE CONCIERTO... RICHARD PERU

  • este clip é incrivel, demorei a encontra-lo, é muito bom mesmo.

  • MY FAVE PART OF THIS SONG IS THE TROMBONE ITS NS

  • pas Sean Penn, le grand Terry WILLIAMS !!!

  • weltklasse song!!!!!!!!!nur das saxophon stört ein wenig.....

  • True music strangely disappeared after Live Aid.

  • This is so good.

  • 7887zz The drummer can play better that the fatuous Penn can act.

alastair: I guess you are a Euroliberal. Grow up. Bletchley Park (military intelligence) won the second world war, holy war got the Spaniards out of the Low Countries, smart bombs saved thousands of lives in Iraq. As for rap I agree with you!!

  • Not only is this one of the best songs ever, but Dire Straits were nice guys who mainly knew how to play well. Rhythm section lacked a bit of depth sometimes, Ilsley great on bass. Knopfler in a class of his own, including Clapton and Page.

  • Did you notice Knopfler's footwork on the pedals. Amazing.

  • Don't think a lot of you younger viewers realize that all the groups & singer went on stage with no rehersals or sound checks for the venue also some of them had never played or sung together before. Live Aid was one great fantastic Jam session. Enjoy the music for what it is and why they were there, making a difference to people dying of starvation in Ethiopia.

  • I don't think Mark Knopfler knows how incredibly talented he is! He is singing like a god, and when he's not singing he's playing something epic on his guitar! Creds to the whole band, but Mark is amazing.

  • Comment removed

  • Ilsley on bass was just great. Rhythm section was awful. Why did the guitarist think he could play like Knopfler and dance like Bowie? Embarrassing. Hope they got rid of him.Lovely drumming.

  • Mi Babi Rick y roll is. Alright....

  • how is it possible that the crowd doesn't go totally nuts watching this? ^^

  • ci72kid Couldn't agree with you more. This is genius.

  • mui bueno

  • This is pure heaven. How Knopfler played without a plectrum I will never know. Geordie genius I guess. Who else can play like this Englishman? Clapton is the closest, and Page.

  • They're the real sultans of swing

  • probably the best music ive ever heard ,,,,,,such talent ,,,,
