I think it's one thing to be excited and appreciate a compliment. Many people are giddy that 'so and so' complimented them in some fashion and then share it with their friends. It's part of our being connected.
But to RT a compliment is, as you say, broadcasting. It's like saying 'See, someone thinks I'm worthy'.
It's Twitter not the Grammy, Oscar, Golden Globe show. No everyone gets 90 seconds to thank the academy.
I don't do it. Ever. It needs to be resisted. It's like having someone pay you a compliment and rather than simply saying thank you, you insist on repeating the compliment to others you meet: "Pardon me, but I was just told that my masculine jawline makes women go weak." Get over yourself and stop being so nakedly vain and ambitious (you or your company).
Hilarious! Little embarrassed that I've done this, but I like to think I've hit the grey area where I've passed along stuff I actually thought was worth my followers' time.
I do think (honestly) Twitter has its place not only for conversation, but as a buzz builder. The trick is to focus on the conversation, and be extremely sparing in the buzz-building. I'm talking like 90% conversation/sharing, 10% buzz.
Ok, I'm on the same page when this is person to person. But what about in terms of compliments to a brand? I can see not retweeting every single "i puffy heart (brand name)!" But what if that brand gets creative tweets directed at them that are REALLY specific and highlight things about the brand that as their social marketer we do our best to highlight? Do others still see said brand as being tacky if those creative tweets are RT'ed? Would LOVE feedback about this.
Absolutely agree. If the person ADDS to your thoughts with some opinion, then I might RT it, but just praise? Nope. I once argued with a pretty major blogger who thought this practice was perfectly fine...he compared it to the praise on a book by other authors. Well can I just say I hate that too? I see the purpose if the endorsement is on the cover and I'm trying to decide whether to buy the book, but when it's inside on the first few pages it strikes me as superfluous self-promotion.

I try to think of value to the person who complimented me and value to my readers when making that decision. Usually there is no value for either of them, so a simple @ or DM thank you is the way to go.
But if someone loved my article and wrote a blog post about it, then I might RT that, because that would give them, their blog, and their ideas exposure too.
Hahah! Thanks for the shout out. I am SO taking you to dinner and complimenting you. Just, ya know, to see what happens. ;) But seriously, I agree with you. I think retweeting on occasion is fine if there is a good reason, but YES the constant retweeting of every compliment is aggravating.
Amen, my friend - Amen..... My favorite part: *serious eyes*.... YOU tell them! People - appreciate the love, pat yourself on the back and leave it alone!

I've been guilty of it in the past, but I am totally aware that it was tacky. And, it was TOTALLY me just being needy. Agree, though, 100%!
