  • I'm not a man u fan before you ask but this will be how pwoplw eventually remember rooney, for his imense technical skill, though at the moment it's fashionable to tear him down, which is exactly what people did to Gazza for most of his career. Plus, for every great performance (for England) he missed at least 2 and dissapointed in 3. Still, up there with Hoddle in terms of technical ability and great to watch when on form. Shame his mental issues weren't realised and the guy wasn't given help.

  • @ohmyspacecadet666 The difference between Gazza and Rooney is that Gazza has performed at the highest level for England and was the best player in the 1990 World Cup by a long way. Rooney has been very disappointing for England when it has mattered in the big games (like many others). It's all well and good scoring regularly in the prem against crap teams like Wigan, Blackburn etc, but you have to do it as Gazza did when it really matters at the top international level.

  • @THthefirst wigan and blackburn are crap? are u fucking stupid. its the EPL. u dont know what youre talking about. fucking prick. and rooney IS better than gazza

  • @sammysawaf1 Why is it that some people can't enter into an intelligent discussion with someone who disagrees with them, without resorting to childish abuse? Why call me a fucking prick for having a different view to you? We are comparing players at the highest level (ie. the World Cup) and so Wigan and Blackburn do not present the same opposition as e.g. Spain or Italy in the World Cup. Gazza was the best player in 1990, Rooney has never done that yet.

  • @sammysawaf1 PS you can't just repeat something to make it true - you say Rooney is "better" than Gaza, yet you have provided no evidence to support that view. As I say, Rooney can score freely against weaker Prem teams, but when he faces international opposition for England, like in the last world cup vs Germany etc he was poor. In fact, he's been poor for England for some time and when we beat Spain we did so without him in the side. I stand by what I said.

  • @THthefirst Fantastic player but its hard to rate Gazzas career as he didnt even come close to fulfilling his potential. He was ONE of the best players in 1990 but not as you say "THE best player by a long shot" Its not the same comparing Gazza and Rooney in England terms. The team that Gazza played in 1990 was outstanding, 1 to 11, every player was brilliant. Rooney has never had that. Do you also dismiss Lionel Messi club achievements bcos he hasnt done anything at International level either?

  • @Bcolly Not sure that I agree the 1990 England team was amazing - it had a v poor group stage, and it was not until the last min wiiner v Belgium that the tournament came alive. Fans were calling for Robson's head up to that point. Sure, it got to the semis, but player for player not sure they had the same success as the likes of Lampard, Gerrard for their home clubs. Rooney has had plenty of chances with the "golden generation" e.g. in 2006, 2010. He's good, but not great.

  • @THthefirst Everytime Rooneys in a tourny something goes wrong. 3 times hes broke his foot. 2006 he barely even played cos he broke a foot a month before and they rushed him back. 2010 id blame Capello, Awful.. Im not an England fan but i thought that 1990 side was v good, some great players and if it wasnt for a 5 year ban for English clubs some of those players possibly couldve had European success. This "Golden Generation" never was, in my opinion, Supremely over-rated by english media.

  • @THthefirst Gazza was a special talent but ill-advised and picked up some horrible injuries. An absolute maniac but impossible not to like him cos of the player and personality he was. Rooney makes it easy to hate him. grannys, prozzys, contract shit, red mist, a general all round cunt who looks like shrek on ridiculous money. Euro 2012 he's ruined his chance cos of a moment of petulance.

  • Without a doubt, the best english player of modern times. During the years he was playing no-one came anywhere near him. People like Rooney, Owen or even Shearer are and were prolific goal scoreers, theres no denying that, but they just dont have the panache or flair that Paul Gascoigne had. This bloke had razmatazz in abundance, it was like the ball was literally glued to his boot. He was magic, I doubt we will see the likes of him again in my lifetime.

  • a true genius. flawed, unfortunately, like so many of his ilk. but what great memories...

  • Legend !!!
