  • "Just manic enough" aha one of my favourite TED talks

  • josh... are you working for big pharma? What the fuck is so great about what he's saying, he's bipolar just like most of us here. If he were on zyprexa, why is he so skinny? he's just one big talker. All he does is run his mouth, there's NO good side to this illness, did you ever stop and think to consider WHO is promoting bipolar Josh? they are pure evil and josh is working for them indirectly... From one bipolar to another talk the real issues, FLUORIDE = BIPOLAR

  • @negativetroll

    oh just noticed your nick..

anyw*.given what he said..why would you think he would actually take zyprexa? I took zyprexa in the past and it made me gain roughly 40 pounds. the first thing I did after I was released from the psych ward was to half the dose and get rid of it entirely in two weeks. It took two years to get rid of the 40 pounds with no effort whatsoever (I guess gaming addiction does help).

If you believe fluoride causes bip*, don't drink tapwater if it's contaminanat

  • @reconciliation86

I definitely agree that the pharamaceutical industry cares about profit only. If they can prove a marginal improvement and market their product, that's all they care for. And if somebody can prove that a different way of eating or thinking will provide an enormous improvement, they will do everything they can to shut them up or discredit them.

But I don't believe there is such a thing as pure evil outside of imagination. Everybody is shades of evil.

  • @reconciliation86

And the edge of everybody more successful than you is to know what shade of evil they want to be and what shade of evil the person they are interacting with would accept or endorse.

I know psych wards are tough, but the doctors and nurses aren't evil - at least that was my experience. They honestely tried to help and care as best as they can. And of course they don't understand and of course communication was difficult and not so important for them as it should be. But they try

  • I have forwarded this on to my psychologist friend who works with a lot of people who are bipolar...

  • There's a lot of wisdom in this idea. I have adult ADD and quite often coworkers and friends would call me crazy just for being different and thinking that everything is doable.I was raised in a socialist republic where being unordinary and eccentric was not well accepted by the society. Luckily, now I'm in a place where those qualities of a "crazy" are recognized. I'm working in the technological innovative field where you have to be "crazy" in order to create the future. I'm glad I'm CRAZY :)

  • I was meant to find this today... I was really meant to find this today. Thankyou so much... Very few rare people have the ability to change people's lives with a few words and this guy can and he is my fukkin hero!

  • this was a great talk, great job joshua walters!

  • TED should be a little more selective, this guy has nothing to deliver, zero

  • @HeilNizar I think your wrong, I rather enjoyed that

  • @HeilNizar I'm sure if you look at things on the other side too, this will be far more interesting than you could have thought of.

  • @HeilNizar i swear i almost cried when he finished, its like you have no idea what he is talking about, ...

  • Its just sad how some people here don't even understand what this guy just told the world.

Honestly, I'd rather be a very talented and gifted guy with bipolar than a normal person. Most men seek fame and fortune, but no fortune nor fame could ever buy talent and gifts.

Hands down Joshua Walters for giving both a funny and deep talk :)

  • yes , its a different level of sensitivity of different ppl and different level of consciousness , persiving the reality around us, and of course one group judging the other group from the level of they ignorance. the world is messed up

  • @Punniabi why?

  • "Maybe everyone's just mad"-The Mad Hatter

  • inspiring talk

  • Bipolar or Bi-WINNING? ; )

  • A wise friend once pointed out to me that "Normal" is a setting on your washing machine. And who the Hell wants to be a washing machine?

  • brilliant!

  • The Golden Phanny Pack of Life!

  • Awesome! I'm sick and tired of our society today framing anything slightly unusual as a pathology. Maybe this Joshua Walters is bipolar, I say he's bi-winning! Go man!

  • Awesome! Well Done Brother!

  • Check out the Terence McKenna video: "Schizophrenic Or Shamanic?"

  • i like this honest side of josh

  • Absolutely amazing. I now have a new term to use in my own mental health/mental illness awareness campaigns - "Mental Skillness"! As a person living with Bipolar Disorder, I can relate 100%. I've been to the same places... I nearly spit my tea when he mentioned the drugs and the pen. My 1st psychiatrist prescribed like that and it made me a very sick lady! I left him for a doc who listen to me. I now lead a very balanced life.

  • wonderful

  • This young man is being so honest and straightforward it's almost brutal. Many people just don't know what to do with a comedian when he's revealing his pain. He makes a good point

  • I just can't believe the people commenting here don't get his point. He's simply telling us that EVERYONE has a place in the society. Close-minded fools.

    Anyhow, inspiring.

  • This is an example of cultural marxism. "It's ok to be brain damaged". Well in reality its not, you fail evolution, but still you can pretend that you are special. So there is need to call madness creativity, to pervert common knowledge, lets not criticize mental illness, lets criticize common knowledge and culture.

You all can feel the fruits of creativity of the brain damaged economists and brokers, don't you. You like the recession? Imagine what a bipolar, shizophernic physician could do

  • @adapaevolved

This is not cultural marxism. If anything, it's the opposite. Bipolarism, schizophrenia, etc are so evolutionarily disadvantageous and yet they still persist in the human gene pool. There HAS to be a reason why this is so.

One theory proposes every few generations, a bipolar/schizophrenic family produces a genius. This explains why, despite causing so many problems, it still is sexually selected for.

  • i feel like this relates to me entirely

3:12 "many of the speakers here, many of you in the audience have that creative edge if you know what im talking about. you're driven to do something that everyone has told you is impossible"

    that made my spine shiver

5:00 "and being diagnosed with a mental illness doesnt mean you're crazy. but maybe it just means you are more sensitive to what most people cant see or feel.."

this is how i feel everyday, am i crazy

  • I'd've liked to see more originality here. This notion is not even remotely new or obscure so, I think, to present it at TED you should have more original research or ideas to present. Otherwise you're simply preaching to the choir and that's boring.

  • Comment removed

  • ".. how lucky you are." It's all about luck, my brother has schizophrenia and thinks he is a god, and I consider myself a completely rational person who is an agnostic/atheist. Pure luck

  • what the fuck is that belt for?

  • Ouch.

  • Actually, that's not true. I've taken enough drugs to think I was Jesus Christ. Man, that was nuts. And it can happen to you too!

  • Brillante actuacion!!!! Sencilla y directa y profunda a la vez.

  • I LOVE IT, really cool n' deep

  • I remember when TED talks were not always about business.

  • @OurFadedGarden how the hell is this about buisness?

  • obviously, there are many people who do not understand mental illness ... and those are the exact people this talk needs to educate.

  • Haters can hate, but I rather liked his talk.

  • Sorry, I dozed off for a few minutes. What did he say?

  • Q. what´s the difference between insanity and eccentricity?

    A. lots of money.

  • Wow. What a great point. Maybe no-one is really mad. Maybe there's no such thing as mental illness. There IS however, still such a thing as annoying cunts, and this guy is a prime example with his 'zany' persona. It takes him 5 minutes to relate something that Foucault could express in 5 seconds. Hardly ground-breaking stuff. Those lone laughers in the audience might as have stood up and announced 'HEY EVERYONE! I CAN RELATE! I TOO AM A CREATIVE TROUBLED GENIUS!'.

  • he cant speak very effectively. Seems a little subversive from my point of view. Maybe he's only trying to communicate his point to certain people, but i find it hard to locate his specific point.

  • 172 Psychologists watched this Video! He is Damn Inspiring!

  • @YTavish141 just curiosity, why is this inspiring?

  • @Paseosinperro Perhaps because he's so boring and unfunny that he makes you feel 100x better about yourself? I know *I* do.

  • excellent

  • Being mad/crazy is a good thing as long as it's not destructive. It's not against the law to be crazy and as long as you don't hurt yourself or others you won't be sent to a mad house. Plus! crazy - like believing in a god, gives you an opportunity to say or do just about anything as long as you don't hurt others or yourself ;)

  • @DurexDurpaneu2 some people have been put through worse just cause people deemed them "crazy" whether they were being destructive or not. positivity is a good thing but truth is too.

  • This guy is silently screaming for approval, disguising it as humble wisdom.

He hates and loves the Ring, as he hates and loves himself.

  • @Ashtree81 thank you Freud :-)

  • @yossieven

You know what? The moment I submitted my comment I realized I wrote it for the exact same reasons.

To satisfy my ego's thirst for attention. The mind works in funny ways yossieven.

  • @Ashtree81 I love how you judge him by just this.

  • dig

  • very deep and excellent point!

  • that was AWEESOM!

  • Brilliant.

  • This guy is not just coming up with witty jokes to make people laugh, but what he's delivering is far more valuable and rare. What he's saying is coming from a deeper place. You just need to listen with a bit of sensitivity and non-judgement.

  • @Zen4Zorba but no one really cares.....No one that matters anyhow!....hows that for deep!

  • @Zen4Zorba This is youtube, people don't have that.

  • @Zen4Zorba yeah cool story bro. not funny or moving? thumbs down. simple as that

  • @Zen4Zorba I believe that you are very right..besides something that he made me realize was what is being "normal" all about.. I mean as to who sets the standard...we were created with different abilities and limitations and it takes one session with a psychologist to term you normal or abnormal....There is definitely more to what a human being can definitely do....

  • This guy needs to leave the speaking circuit and collect aluminum or something. As for who ever at Ted invited this idiot to speak..well that guy should be ashamed. Really Ted is much better then to put on a complete rambling moron. The guy who put him on need to be let go or at least get some sort of suspension for bring down Teds rating and wasting the collective time of many people unlucky enough to have clicked on to this sorry excuse for a talk!

  • @DK0526 After listening to the speaker and reading your comment, I fully agree that one of you is an idiot - and I'm pretty sure that this is you

  • @TheMkireev Thats Ok Dorks have been wrong before...and dorks of a feather flock togther! You and dorko can rub pricks together and see if you can start a fire!

  • Comment removed

  • @DK0526 man, you better check yourself with a doctor about this urinary incontinence

  • @TheMkireev ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss...whats that?

  • TOO SLOW. The pauses for his "jokes" really detracted.

  • That wasn't one of the best TED talks i have seen...almost interesting, but he quoted from books !? THAT is not very creative...at none...see... that's creative....

  • too much waiting for the two clapping fellows to finish. he should have just talked on. this is kinda waste-of-time, most of the time.

  • YOU INSPIRED MY LIFE!

  • Hmm. He was not a great speaker, and I did kinda come away feeling like he's a little bit crazy, but he makes an interesting point.

  • too much obssesion with the ******* success ...."if you are mentally ill, don`t worry, you can even obtain success more easily"

  • THIS, THIS, THIS. Anyone that doesn't see the humor is unfortunately NOT crazy enough.

  • I loved this, his perspective, opinion, I can concede to the many comments that say this is lacking in humor, but a wonderful Ted Talk nonetheless

    liked, faved

  • this guy is my hero.... feeling like jesus is crazy

  • Bush could follow this douche.

  • Genius perspective.

  • its always nice to see the bright side of the so called bad things, as creators or inventors, most people think we are crazy

  • This guy is brilliant. I can't believe he's receiving so many negative comments.

  • Comment removed

  • Anyone who has actually SUFFERED from bipolar would be hard put to say anything good about it.

  • he's cute...

  • get another serving of crazy yo just plain boring mop top

  • TED used to be a must watch.

    if you beatbox, get stuffed.

  • Very inspirational. He's speaking another language, for those of you who think he's trying to be funny. It's really not supposed to be funny, it's just pure inspirational awesomeness encoded from the magic of hyperspace =)

  • douchebag alert!

  • it all depends on what other people think you're capable of...

  • Articulation of crazy. I like it.

  • This was great.

  • Why people is asking this guy to be funny?

He is just making a point.

  • @AnthicusZithna What point?!

  • @AnthicusZithna because he's descibed as a comedian and the talk is descibed as funny...perhaps?

  • cant wait for SWTOR, and I hope they make a Portal 3. portal 2 was so much fun!!.. If you want to take a wikked, shit, eat a lot of nuts.

  • This talk is a little awkward, and it certainly isn't the funniest thing I've ever seen, but then I don't go to TED expecting funny in the first place. What he's done is taken a shot at degstigmatizing the lower excesses of mental illness. He doesn't deny the helpfulness of drugs, nor do I, but he may be correct in thinking we're "trimming too much fat," so to speak.

  • It was only a five minute talk, and to be honest, a very thought provoking one. He brought up interesting points about the ill defined line between madness and genius and did it in a span of about five minutes. Anybody who didn't appreciate the talk had better be curing cancer to complain about how it wasted five minutes

  • this guy reminds me of Conan O'Brien

  • I'm also bipolar and this guy is a douche. Although sometimes I am a douche I don't go up on stage and say it's kind of awesome. But sometimes it is.

  • @CatFacedKillers That comment was affirmation of your skillness :)

  • Cmon Ted...we demand real science and rational talks !

  • Sadly that was just 6 mins that I will never be able to get back. If I wanted to listen to a nut ramble I would have just went to the local psych ward. Ted usually has good speakers why they put this guy? Do they need to balance good speakers with cr@p?

  • @DK0526 you're just another pragmatic d*osh.

  • i think people didn't laugh because they were scared, honestly this wasn't thaaat bad..

  • @filipasusanafreitas Could also be that we have a better health system that can identify the disease. You know, science.

  • i feel bad because there is like one or two people that laugh. =/

  • Tesla was an obsessive compulsive. If he was treated for his "illness" we would all be working with DC and not using computers, since he was the inventor of AC and of the integrated circuit.

  • @srvvlhm on a lighter side.....if his illness was cured.....

his inventions (inspiration) might have taken off much quicker had his ability to convince people to use his type of current over the almost insane idea of DC at an industrial scale.. Edison's plan.......

    we may never know......

  • @azmanabdula so you're referencing Tesla? Sure he was a genious with a side edging on madness, but was that bipolar?

BTW Tesla is one of my favourite historical persons. I am in awe of his work and achievments, some of which requires radical free thought on a level i find it hard to comprehend.

As a person with "obsession binges" i can to some extent appreciate the creativity manic episodes can bring, and agree with the speaker here that the key is not passing the good amount of crazy/manic.

  • @gulllars im sorry but i dont know what you mean......

are you saying the speaker is right about showing people just enough of your "crazy" side......

to be appreciated without looking full out crazy?

  • @azmanabdula sort of. The first part about about Tesla is an argument that "not normal" thinking can lead to great things if paired with a personality and knowledge able to wield that way of thought.

The second part is a comment that i myself have periods i deeply immerse myself in a subject sometimes for all of my spare time a few weeks before moving on. This has lead me down an aspiring polyglot/polymath lifepath, and a free-thinker.

Some crazy can be good as long as it's not self-destructive.

  • @gulllars nothing is good if its makes you self destructive : )

    but you're right.....

    peace

  • i'm just wondering, how does one qualify or apply to be on ted talks?

  • So I should go hire that guy I saw yelling at a tree and manage him to make millions?

  • There's a good Mad-Pride kindof movement called "The Icarus Project" which has good things to say about living with bipolar, etc.

This random internet stranger anyway recommends checking it out, it's interesting.

  • @filipasusanafreitas it may be because Indian culture is more embracing of psychological differences.

I mean the main religion there is polytheistic, that's gotta help. No matter who you are, there's a few Deities perfect for you. There's more gaps for people to fit into.

On the flipside, I'd expect cultures built around monotheistic religions to be probably more authoritarian and psychologically oppressive on the whole. Coz it's "my way or the highway".

  • The hell did I just watch?

  • Zyprexa is nasty stuff makes me a zombie. I've always thought that things like ADHD were good because people with ADHD tend to ignore the commercials and focus on the actual show. They are also better at multitasking than normal boring peoples. =)

Everything and everyone has a use just depends on how you apply it.

  • Being in a similar if less exaggerated situation, I do agree with this point of view and I frequently bring up Beethoven and Van Goh along with Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. However, I think that the magnitude of bittersweet beauty that comes with a force like that was not portrayed to its full spectacularness here... I feel like it was a great set up which then fell flat. But it makes me happy to see this concept creeping out into the big world... That we are seeing imperfect as a perfection.

  • This is probably the most useless, pointless TED talk Ive ever seen. Oh noes I HAS BIPOLARS but look!, Im a comedian and Im on TED too and I can waste 5 minutes of your time if you actually watch all this junk! :D

    /next

  • well ...what can one add to this!?! ...the intro is remarkably louder than the presentation ...the vision statement is 'Ideas worth spreading' in terms of technology/entertainment/design ...perhaps the commentary already addresses "being just crazy enough" enough ...Ok I'm done :-])

    peace

  • @filipasusanafreitas Hmm...have you ever been to India? I'm not sure I'd hold India up as some paragon of balance... Yes, aspects of American culture now are highly problematic, but except for maybe Bhutan, I'd assert that "modern" life is presenting a challenge to humanity worldwide...it's just more pronounced in North America & Europe. Your comment...its wording and tone...doesn't indicate balance and peace either. Maybe if we had more compassion instead of anger for those who suffer...

  • he sucks at beatboxing :(

  • @filipasusanafreitas Every nation has its problems, India's no exception. As for the existence of bipolar disorder in India, it's fair to assume it's there but remains largely undiagnosed. Generally speaking, many cultures outside of Europe and the US do not place such an emphasis on diagnosing and treating mental illness.

  • Fail. Needs more Clifford Stoll.

  • man this guy is boring.

  • Well, what I like about TED talks is that no matter what, there is something you can get out of them; some talks give out a lot of inspiring ideas, some fewer and some close to none but even with those you can look at the comment section and find out about how people think differently about those videos which is interesting and eye-opening.

  • When people say "performer" instead of saying what the fuck they actually do on stage, I always instead hear "pretentious arsehole"

  • It's one of these things that if you say this is pointless people will say you're an asshole, and you don't get it. Really though, the emperor is naked

  • @dylanlawless1 Very true.

  • How do I get bipolar?

  • I was sceptical when I saw the title of this.

    I was right.

because evertime the title of the video suggests the person in it to be creative or crazy it just ends up to be silly, boring or banal.

but i guess it helps not beeing to aware of yourself, when you`re in public ;-)

thats the key to success! at least in showbiz :-))

  • Its not about being normal or not, its about being in a mindset which allows you to integrate successfully with society.

  • Is it me or is this very very unfunny.

  • @librariannz i'm not sure it was meant to be haha-funny. I think a lot of the laughs were "oh yeah i've been there before" laughs.

  • @librariannz i dont think it was meant to be funny

  • @librariannz It's not you.

  • @librariannz

    he's being serious

  • @librariannz Wow did you think you were watching a comedy sketch?

  • @librariannz

    It must be you

    Go back to sleep...

  • This guy is a fucking idiot and a loser making people laugh over mental illness, especially to a group of fucking peddlers dishing out the drugs to 'cure' it. Low TED. Real low.

  • @iwanttotubereallybad you should've watched the whole thing, and there's no need to swear, you're sending out a negative attitude. Low iwanttotubereallybad. Real low.

  • hes got the same name as me :O

  • I thought Jesus was a carpenter not a comedian. At any rate...yay for non-existent diseases!

  • Normal is just a cycle of the washing machine nowadays ...

  • Psychiatrist treats body disorders as much allergologist treats allergies, are they blamed for normalisation? Allergies are also bodies disfunction, as much mania. If he would be in mania, he wouldn't be able to perform. Quite a few of famous people had asthma, so what? If not treated, bipolar tends to get worse. Psychiatry isn't about making smb "normal" it's about helping people to live. With treatment people can also be "abnormal" by "normal" people standarts, but this isn't what's treated...

  • im diagnosed bi- polar and this guy is an idiot

  • @brandonpringle16 that's just your illness talking

  • @brandonpringle16 I am diagnosed bi-polar and you are a this guy. plus he's funny. and he's not. cause he's bi-polar. awesome talk. or not. whatever.

  • I think he has points. the opposite of logic is something most of you don't understand. it's why a rare person becomes a legend, and no one knows who any of you are.

  • @AndrewPMello ya he has points but he portrays them wrong and compleatly misses the point that it is a mental illness, mania is a beast that cannot be tamed, embracing it will only lead to chaos, this is somthing i understand and you do not so please respect the comments of people much smarter then yourself

  • @brandonpringle16 look up positive psychology. I'm sure you are far more intelligent than I. I hope comparing your self to others gives you confidence. Life isn't this grid of intelligence and idiocy - it just is. Study the great people of this earth and you will notice a common thread that mr. walters is talking about.

  • @brandonpringle16 ??? Um. you are the expert? I think he's brilliant.

  • After seeing the red leather gimp guy on TED, this speaker really couldn't impress me anymore dispite being bipolar as hell.

  • This is disgusting. He's proud of his psychotic break when he was a teenager. He's exploiting himself.

  • I don't understand why everyone assumed he was going to do a set. It was a solid, professional presentation that included some wittiness. He had a point and if he presented it as a comedy sketch, the idea would likely get clouded in the punchlines.

  • Beautiful. Poor audience but he didn't falter a bit.

  • Wow, the libertarian psychologist Thomas Szasz would love this talk!
