The maple top is real, carved top. Just not as thick as a Les Paul top. But it plays and sounds very nice and is $2000 less than an LP. I'm comparing to my 82 LP custom.
I played one of these about 6 months ago in a store in another town. Sounded like absolute junk. Felt fine, looked good, sounded bad. Thin, thready highs, flabby lows, all around bad. But I played another one last week, played great, sounded great. All I can think of is perhaps the batteries were dying on the first one. I have an 83 LP Custom as well :) The 2nd one was definitely nice, for a very nice price.

Is the spalted maple cap "real" or is it a veneer? Just wondering, not that it mattters much, looks great sounds awesome!
