  • great presentation.. congrats keep it up ..

  • I find the best way to rebuild engines, is to pull them completely apart, to single pieces, spread it out in a big cycle, then place the new parts i wan't installed in the middle, then leave it, go inside and start praying, the creator with do his thing, come back out in 7 days and it will be fully assembled and test run! REALLY, Have faith! trust me!

Note of caustion, be sure to take the new parts out of their plastic bags, for some reason the creator has an issue with that! (??)

    God Bless

  • @1BustedMyth Individual results may vary.

  • @bddc201 , Your not praying hard enough

  • u need to get a camera person so we can see you do it

  • You keep calling the crankshaft the cam shaft.... the camshaft is what governs the timing of the valves...

  • were did u get the kit

  • Great video, man. Really liked it.

  • its not a centrifical clutch its a governor

  • Hey,that kit cost more than $23.00. More like $123.00,these kits are not cheap.

  • thanks

  • kool what did the kit come with i hav a vintage briggs and stratton engine that needs a complete rebuild

  • @bubbah12345 ; I do not recall what the kit contained. Gaskets and piston rings, at least. You might want to look at the web site, or a similar one. I did the rebuild three years ago.

  • how much was the kit

  • @bubbah12345 ; The rebuild kit was $23 USA dollars.

  • @Desertphile where did u get it

  • @bubbah12345 ; I bought the kit on-line at .jackssmallengines . com

  • that thing was not a clutch it was a governor and that arm was the governor linkage, not a throttle. that linkage pulls on the carbs butterfly valve to keep the engine from overrevving

  • it was hard to resist sighing and slapping my forehead after watching this. But whatever it's cool that more people are getting into this stuff

  • @briggs5sboy ; Unfortunately I have zero experience working on small engines--- but if I don't try to fix them, they stay unfixed. The ranch cannot afford to hire someone to make the engines run.

  • at 3:20 they are called collets.

also, its an inlet, not input valve.

    im jack, 13 in england.

  • @minedronebiznis yes!yes! us young peolpe r awsome!we know more bout this stuff than some adults!crazy

  • dude its not a clutch

  • that counterweight cant move at all it is part of the crank shaft witch is solid

  • That gear and rod that you called a centrifugal clutch is actually the governor mechanism. That plastic yellow gear has a metal piece in the middle that opens when it spins and regulates the revolutions of the engine. That way you won't over rev and lose the rod or something! ;) Great vid though!!

  • Dude, the new piston looks like plastic.

  • It's called a wrist pin (not a link pin) ;O)

  • Well acually u can take the gears out but what u have 2 do is put the piston all the way 2 the upper position then there should be a notch on 1 side. u have to remember where that notch was when u put back together. There is 2 reasons u would want 2 do that. (1) If the egine rocks all over the place u get a xtremly precise tool to measure the crankshaft and piston rod to c the difference. if it is 2 different u have to get a knew rod to stop the rocking. (2) to clean the gears. A SNAPPER ENGINE?

  • How did you took off crankcase?

  • "How did you took off crankcase?"

The crank case has two tabs that accept a pry-bar. I just pried the case apart after removing the bolts.

  • good video.. wasnt sure if you knew what all the parts were called but ya did!!! its an easy job eh??? and i was wondering if you were going to say make sure you dont line up the gaps in the piston rings because this is not good for the engine and creates too much blow by.. ya them 8horse single cylinders are easy.. i got a 16hp opposed twin cylinder that im gonna tear apart and maybe my other 16horse twin cylinder too.. not sure yet..

  • where did you get the parts and the compressor please reply

  • "where did you get the parts and the compressor"

On-line via mail delivery from Jack's Small Engines.

  • Thanks for this video. You have given me confidence to tackle my 5hp Briggs.

  • Yes it is possible to convert one, but I generally avoid them apart from my lawn mower engine, I mean the ones I rebuild and apply for different uses are never vertical. Most none lawn mower applications require a horizontal motor, otherwise if you have a right angle gear box (lying around) , metal, and a welder, it can be done rather cheaply. the only real concerne with that conversion is the way the oil slinger works.

  • hey is there anyway to bore out a valve? and is there anyway to convert a horizontal drive engine to a vertical drive engine?

  • Howdy! I do not know how to convert a small engine from horizontal to vertical, but I have heard it is possible. I suppose only Google knows for sure.

As for valves, there are indeed tools to reseat valves, and there is valve grinding compound to do it. My knowledge on such things is almost zero: I am not a mechanic.

  • change the crankcase to one like on a lawnmower and makesure the carbarator bowl is facing down

  • hi nice vid man can u help me im looking for the part number to that dipper of yours i want to convert a vertical shaft to a horizontal

  • "hi nice vid man can u help me im looking for the part number to that dipper of yours i want to convert a vertical shaft to a horizontal"

Howdy. It is 222113, "Dipper - Connecting Rod." It is reference number 30 in the old repair manuals. If you send to me privately an email I can send the PDF document to you.

  • Do you know where I can find a 3hp horizontal shaft rebuild kit just like yours

  • Hi! "Jack's Small Engines" has a on-line parts database that will probably meet your requirements: there are more than a dozen engines here at the ranch and I've found parts for all of them at "Jack's Small Engines." I will send to you a private message with the URL.

  • you need some marven mystry oil and if u give up on this let me know

  • use brakleen to clean parts best stuff ever

  • if you want your engine to look relly clean sand blast all the outer parts

  • also carb cleaner is a great way to clean off greese i use it all the just wipes off like nothing

  • Hi!

How did you cleaned the inside of the engine? I want to do the same to my 3.75hp Briggs. :)

  • I used gasoline to clean the inside of the engine. Fortunately the oil had been changed regularly, so it was not filthy inside.

  • thats the last straw im gunna set the building on fire

    he took my stapler

  • Is it me or does this guy sound just like Milton from the film 'office space' ?

  • has anyone seen my stapler...?

  • the input valve and the exit exhaust valve lol id be afraid to lose the valve keepers through the cracks on the deck why didnt you show how to use the valve spring compressor i wouldve like to seen it

  • Its not even a centrifigul clutch it is the throttle

  • no its actually the govenor and oil slinger. but i see where ur coming from, the governor controls throttle so i'll give u that.

  • piton ring cap??

  • you never honed out cylander your rings arnt going to seat right

  • Unlike on most larger engines, this Briggs has an aluminum cylinder. Called a Kool-Bore by Briggs, honing will only tear up the cylinder wall. Piston rings will seat by themselves in an aluminum cylinder if the cylinder itself isn't too badly worn. (And if this is the case, you just have to replace the block; boring out an aluminum cylinder doesn't produce satisfactory results.

  • "Unlike on most larger engines, this Briggs has an aluminum cylinder. "

Thank you for that information: I have no idea how to actually do the job--- it was all guesswork on my part.

  • I can defenitly see a carburator. I have yet to see on being rebuilt yet...

  • what do u need the lapping compund for

  • "what do u need the lapping compound for"

It grinds away some of the metal under the valves so that the valves seat better.

  • "piston ring cap"? You mean rod cap. Piston rings are the rings that go on the outside of the piston to make a seal with the cylinder wall for vacuming air/fuel into the combustion chamber and allowing for compression.

  • what you refer to as 'link pin' is called a piston pin, and the 'piston rod' you refer to is called a connecting rod. Inside the main bearing cap is what's called a rod bearing. Its purpose is to provide a smooth non friction surface to connect to the journal of the crankshaft with. That crankshaft spins all the time the engine is on. So, metal on metal would eventually wear both the crank journal and main bearing cap down. Hence, they use a main bearing.

  • technically, piston rings are called o-rings. I'm not criticizing. I dropped $50 twice to take a small engine repair class. The terminology I learned I'm sharing with you, to save you the money I spent.

  • o-rings are seals not piston rings

  • mayeb u can help me.. got my engine about 3 years ago .. and then i fueled it up and didn't work... but i'm guessing that because there is no blade .. the engine isn't in balance... so do i need some sort of flywheel? because i'm going to restore it sometime soon and i want to make a go kar (i'm hoping to find a supercharger :D)

  • heh, getting the valve springs, retainers, and tappets off is the easy part.... the hard part is putting them back together. Takes a couple minutes to get them off, and at least 15 minutes at times to get them back on.

  • the 'half drum things cut in half' is called tappets. Their purpose is to slide into the valve spring retainer(the washer type thing) to hold the spring in place.

  • hey i have a very very similar engine and i rebuilt it me too! :P

  • Who would have thought that an internal combustion engine would be so complicated.

  • me.

  • if you want to see complicated, look at an automatic transmission for automobiles.

  • Fascinating so far.

  • OMG!!!11 i like yours free energys motor!!! why governments for make war against your teslazzz??

  • Is there anything you can't do? I think not!

  • "Is there anything you can't do? I think not!"

Alas, I cannot do MOST things! It sucks.

  • well I'm forever impressed, sir!

  • Did you ever have trouble getting the new rings to clear the cylinder walls?

  • Smile and nod to idiots like their opinions matter? Somehow I just don't see Desertphile even throughly relaxed being able to do that, and that gives me joy.

  • then again maybe he can for just a minute or 2 before he shreds their silly superstitions.

  • "Smile and nod to idiots like their opinions matter?"

ROTFL! I've tried to do that, really I have! It's just so damn hard to merely thank a clueless nut and then ignore him / her. It's so much easier to just call them names.

  • brilliant comment! LoL!!
