  • This goal will always bring a smile to my face.

  • what killed russia here was the aggressive set up in Canada's zone but the two russians falling over each other didnt help. And what's up with the hook in the neutral zone - Lemieux might have not scored that goal. Blatant penalty.

  • selfish play, the backdoor was wide open....

  • We dont care how we win, we dont give a shit about the rules as long as we come out on top! IF a Russan player hooked a Canadian player like that on the Winning Goal of this game, He would end up in the box & the Goal, taken back, and (most) of us know it.

  • I often wonder what it was like for the Soviets returning home after being beaten in these tournaments.

  • @summer20105707 - I believe some of them may have ended up like one of Canada' noted hero's, Doug Harvey.

And perhaps some ended up like Joe Louis, Max Schmeling helped Joe with gifts of money and it's believed he also paid Joe's funeral expenses.

Joe Frazier ended up in a one room shack, hardly fitting for a man who made Millions for the US Government.

Hey & just an after thought, if the 2 Joe's had learned to skate, they would added a lot of "punch" to either team Can. or USA. We R brainwashed

  • talk about passing the torch

  • you guys cant argue about calls and non calls cause thats hockey people could dig back and find ones on the Russian players too its just cause it happened on this play is the reason your arguing about it, and the score tells who the better team was, thats why keeping score was invented to say the Russians were better is a lie because they lost lol

  • Canada > the world

  • Awesome, awesome, awesome! The greatest goal in hockey history!

  • there are a few moments in time that are burned into your memory. this is one of them for me

  • An interesting fact, Hawerchuk was the player of the game after this goal. He was one the most underated players in recent times.

  • @boskey10 -He probably got player of the game for the hook on the Russian who would have had Lemieux @ the :24 mark.

And add to that, similar shit like that was going on all games against the much superior Russian teams.

The Russians were superior & every Canadian player who ever played against them, knew it. They expected non calls from the very biased officials,& when they did get called, (which was very seldom), they were infuriated!

They were head & shoulders above Can., now just a head

  • @hanksnow2 Back then that clutch and grabbing was normal back in 1987. The Russian team's where great sometime even the best but in the this Canada cup we did have the better goaltending and we where slightly better. At one time in the late 50's,60's and between 1979-81 the Russians where the best in hockey. From 84 to now Canada has the had the edge in International play. You just can't blame officiating when canada beat them, its who ever makes the least mistakes win the game.

  • @boskey10 - At about the 1 Min. mark, you can plainly see # 27 being hauled down by Hawerchuk, @ :24 it's not that evident as it is only part view.

If this obvious hook was called, not only Can. does not score, they should get penalized, & the best team would have won.

I have most all USSR/Can. games on vhs & have watched them over again & there is so much going on, & you can't see it all.

The 76 Flyers/Russia game was probably the worst game ever played with respect to human rights.

  • @hanksnow2

I would expect that though. The flyers were dirty even by our standards in North America.

Do you have any Montreal Canadiens games vs USSR in the 70's. I'm a habs fan and I'd love to see that.

  • @summer20105707 -I bought my first VCR in Feb. 1979($1750.00), to have a copy of "The Series of The Century", soon to be forgotten by the NHL & their loyal supporters. You may remember the final game was 6-0 Russia, with out "K" & "T" in their line up.

So from then on I got every international game that was available to me. There may be parts of some games on youtube though.

I was a Habs fan until 72, then I figured the NHL was not as good as I once thought, but my son became a Hab & still is.

  • @hanksnow2 - Taking another look @ this, it looks like the Russians are a man down, another reason why the penalty should have been called,....unless, of course, there is some kind of bias in the officiating.

The penalty should have been called shot handed or not, but just 1 of the many, many non calles by corrupted officials.

Bogus calls on icing, off-sides, & penalties were required 2 keep the games close, & who in N/America would disagree.

Granted after the Fall of the Wall it's down hill.

  • @hanksnow2

I'm sick and tired of hearing this shit all the time. Our Canadian players played the Canadian brand of hockey at that time. We played according to the rules we knew. Officials arent always perfect. BUT I AM SICK OF THE CAN'T CHECK A PLAYER PASS AROUND THE PUCK HEAD SPINNING GARBAGE THAT PASSES FOR HOCKEY IN THE NHL THESE DAYS. These guys were great. The teams today can't compare with the likes of this, Guy Lafleur or Mr Hockey Gordie Howe. Too many Primadonas

  • @summer20105707 - I know your sick & tired, but just look at under 17, Juniors, Spengler & soon to be the world's, which the officials will be under some kind of pressure to have Can. Or the US win, so Cherry can say something in favour of Can or the N/American in a pos tone

  • @hanksnow2

After looking at this video again the biggest error Russia made was having two players try to take down Lemieux. The second guy bouced off Lemieux and that gave Lemieux the break away. It was all over from there. They clearly underestimated how strong Mario was.

  • @summer20105707 -Don't get me wrong, I like Mario & other skilled Canadians, but the truth is, they could not compete with the Russians until the last couple of years.

A few years ago a guy by the name of Kasparaitis levelled Mario, Kas went over to see if he was ok, & Mario put both hands over his head, expecting to be hit again...it didn't look good.

But I would ask you to have a look @ "How Canada Won the 1987 Canada Cup: The First Round Game". This guy has put together some good stuff look

  • @hanksnow2

Darius was a noted tough player. He even knocked out that whining primadona Lindros for 18 games. And Lindros was known to be a physical player. By the way in that 87 Canada cup clip who from team USSR was covering Gretzky? Leaving him uncovered is BAD. Maybe your right. Maybe Hawerchuck should have been called. But leaving Gretzky and Lemieux to do their thing was a BIG mistake.

  • @summer20105707 - you say I may be right about Hawerchuck, well if I am, the player tripped would have had him. But I mention only that non call, there are dozens of them in Russia Can. games, & Can gets away with the majority of them.

I asked you to look at this clip, & then you may see what I am talking about..."How Canada Won the 1987 Canada Cup: The First Round Game"..Watch it & then come back to me. BTW he has many others that will show what Can. got away with.

  • my fave goal of all time

  • Lemieux and Gretzky attacking with only 1 defender back. Game over.

  • I remember where I was when he scored that goal.

  • Gretzky, Lemieux what a sight!!!

  • A good point Coleman

  • Where's the call in the neutral zone? Goal would have never happened except for the ridiculous interference at center ice.

  • @coleman1300 hey dude that was in 1987 it was allowed to hook a guy if he didn't have the puck back then plus there was only one ref who couldn't see everything that was happening on the ice...

  • As a young boy I remember thinking "Wow, 5 centers on the ice."
