This was actually way easier than expected. Learning things slowly surely does magic....
However, using the first finger to pick the 4th string, doesn't quite give the same distinct "boom chick/Merle Travis/Chet Atkins" style alternating bass/rythm. It harder that way but definitely sound better. I see your point, using this somewhat easier technique, but i think you should mention that this not "true" Chet Atkins style
Do you know that Christianity is correct? The world around us reveals that G-d DOES exist, and the historical evidence reveals that Jesus Christ really did come to this earth and there is overwhelming evidence that Jesus Christ really did physically rise from the dead. Jesus is coming again and the signs of the end times that were foretold in the Bible are coming to pass.
gr8 lesson. Could u pls help me to decide which effect to use for this type of pickin. Especially to make it sound like classical guitar. I'm using zoom g 2.1u
Hey great tutorial! I'm going to explore all your other ones now that was superb! An hour ago I thought this kind of picking was way beyond me, now I have still a long way to go but can begin to do it very slowly! Cheers!
Hi, I liked your website and your lessons a lot. You are very logical and simple in you instructions and being an accomplished guitarist myself I find it very refreshing to find a guy like you on line to help others with ideas and inspiration. Thanks for that. I left you a small donation for your effort and I hope that anyone using you website will do the same. You deserve it. Regards, Jac.
@JacCEck Hey Jack - thank you so much for the donation! I really appreciate it. Also thanks for the kind words as well. I try really hard to take something complicated like learning to play a guitar solo or fingerstyle and make it as simple as I can - because so much of it is psychological you know. I have such a love for the guitar and want to do everything I can to keep this art form alive!
Question: If Chet or Tommy Emmanuel were playing this, would they use the thumb to pick the 4th string also, rather than index? As someone just starting this, trying to get into a good habit, or does it really matter? Thanks
Great video! but as a left handed guitar instructor I feel you should be saying "picking hand" not "right hand"; "fret hand" in the same. Awesome tutorial activemelody.
Hey thanks so much for the video. I am 14 and I recently became intrigued by Chet's playing. I always loved the sound of a walking bass and "solo" notes all being played by one instrument. Great playing too!
Great lesson!! I've been a full-time guitar teacher for the last seven years. I play mostly rock, blues and jazz. I've spent some time today researching Chet Atkins/Merle Travis style playing. This is, by far, the best lesson that I've seen today (including Chet himself trying to explain it). Nice job of explaining things very simply and clearly. Keep up the good work. You're a very good teacher...
Oh, where is the TAB that is supposed to accompany the lesson?
@skiingguitarist Thanks for the kind words - glad to see others out there interested in Chet's style of playing. You can download the tab for this lesson and all of my lessons at activemelody (dot) com
@brostomper I agree. I would walk the bass between the 5. 4. and 6.th string with the thumb. It is a very bad idea to use the pointer finger on the 4. string. Tomym Emmanuel would never use the pointer finger on the 4th string. So I would strongly reccomend the thumb on ALL bass strings.

With all respect I think you got it all wrong. thumb works in 8 not in 4 notes
watch Mr Chet Atkins himself.
I think your video is very misguiding.

@acountrygent You are absolutely correct. This lesson is actually "how to simulate chet's style." Chet's thumb would in fact be moving twice as fast.

is that a gibson es355 reissue?

Why not to pick the 4th string with the thumb too? Does Chet Atkins did it like you do?

Very well presented lesson. I've never tried finger picking, looks difficult! Might be some time mastering that! Thanks for putting the vid' on.
