  • Good stuff, but arent you worried the crucible may break and blowup the concrete? Be safer on the grass wouldnt it?

  • It would be safer on a sand bed, but grass could be a problem if there's much dampness around. I've experienced molten iron on damp earth and never knew I could move so fast!

  • do they come in.. uhh.. body size?

  • I sell the book on how to build this waste oil furnace, you build it to whatever size you want. The design is very simple and scaling things up isn't a problem.

    Regards Colin

  • @theartfulbodger Excellent!

    *rubs hands*

  • sir I have been on your website but cann't figure the price for the book in us dollars could you let me know thank you

  • Hi, go back onto my site and contact me directly from one of the links

  • Industrial Strength! A dream come rue for one raised among foundrymen, machinists and sheet metal men. THANKS!

  • Thank you, I must admit it does all I want and more. Colin

  • great videos. love iron casting. not enough vids about it. too many on aluminum foundries.

  • Thank you, I'll get around to posting a few more one day.

  • great book many thanks, saved it's cost in fuel already...

  • check your mail

  • I can't find anything. This might be a lot easier if you visit my web site and contact me through one of the links there. I can't put the address here but tap "the artful bodger" into a search engine and you should find my site.

  • check your mail

  • Far to powerfull you say in terms of temp or kw, because i wuld fit a long tube with refactory before the heat exchanger, i see high temp as a benefit as the cobustion will be complete, if you have any specs i wuld be delighted.

  • When I say de-tuned, the first one I tried still melted a cast iron crucible I put inside to act as a heat store. The second one ( the one I'm playing with now and have good feelings about) is still running at 800-1000 deg.C. I'm trying to keep this down a bit. A number of people have bought my book to experiment for heating, I'm happy to share the limited amount I've done so far along these lines, but only with book purchasers as the operating principles are the same as the furnace.

  • Does it use propane in ad to the oil, can it clog and will it fit my sentral heating system?

  • The furnace will burn propane, but I can't remember the last time I used it. It is designed to get very hot quickly and is far too powerful for a central heating system. I have been playing around with a de-tuned version with very promising results for heating. This is along the lines of a back burner system rather than a thermostatically controlled gas boiler. I am confidant that I will make something that works well, but am not in a position to positively state this at this time.

  • Is this just a babington whitout retur

  • No, my system bears no likeness to a babington whatsoever.

  • Colin, you are an inspiration! What do you think of the furnaces offered on eBay by one 'castingcowboy'?

  • Hi; Thank you for the kind words, I couldn't find castingcowboy on eBay but I guess this is foundry 101? The furnaces look very smart, but I know nothing about them. I'm afraid propane doesn't work for me, I've tried it and simply can't afford it especially for cast iron!

  • THANKS! Where are tghe plans for the waste oil furnace?

  • I have written a book on how to build and operate this furnace, google "The Artful Bodger" for my website (as I can't give it here) and look at "the book" page (the rest of the web site might be of interest as well!). Colin

  • It would have been better if you put the camera facing the shaded area. Do you have any drawings of the furnace? I especially like the swinging lid. Do you have any links to metalcasting information? What kind of burner do you use?

  • The camera was only a web cam stuck out of my dining room window as far as it would reach! Check out my web site, I can't post the address here but tap in "the artful bodger" into a search engine and you should find it, there are several links to email me there. Colin
