By the way, the Lunar Landers also were computer controlled, but with human override, which was fortunate, as the computer steered toward an unsuitable landing spot, and Armstrong could correct it. A computer can't see boulders or small craters. The Surveyors landed much on chance.

One LLRV crashed at Edwards AFB during a demonstration flight before aerospace and government VIPs, killing its pilot. It's why there was an ejection seat in the later version which Neil Armstrong had to bail out of.

The real LM had small windows, which made it difficult to have good visibility in any seating position. The solution, although simple, took a while to be found - land and take off with the astronauts standing up.

Too bad the real landers had these very small windows to see out of. If they had the visibility that these test vehicles have, they MIGHT have been able to actualy land on the moon. As it is, they just orbitted for a while and then came home.
