Well, I would think that the way the refs were calling this game, it appears that they had too little control of the game and the players were possibly at a loss at what's probably total lack of consistency that led up to this melee. It would be enough to frustrate the announcers as well (i.e. "That doesn't make any sense at all." repeatedly).
