I learned how to do that as a kid, but it's a lapsed skill. First the family went to cheap commercial bows (always reusing them until they fell apart), and finally I just stopped doing the whole Christmas consumer spree altogether.
It's fun to be a Scrooge, everyone gets on my case this time of year. :-)
