You're right, the writers were mean to the Lily character, but they only had two parents, and one had to respond in this way as representative of that faction of parents since that's the faction they wanted to show.
I loved how Holden took control of the situation and marched Jade out of the house, so Luke & the family could deal with everything together in private. Well done.
I just want Holden to hug his son... all sons want their fathers to do this, no matter who we are.
It seems to me that Lily is more upset witht he fact that Luke told Jade before he told her and that Holden kept his suspicions a secret, than she is that her son is gay. if so, she should explain that to Luke so that he doesn't feel like shes rejecting him. As for telling Jade, sometimes it's easier to tell a stranger than your parents.
When I came out to my parents few years ago, they said absolutely nothing. I know my mother is homophobic, but she knows the minute she tries to change me I'll cut all my ties to her. I still have no idea what my father thinks. I wish they could just tell me what they think.

I believe all parents want their children to be happy. I think Lily reacts the way that she does because she feels that the future she envisioned for Luke is the only way for him to be happy, but that's not the case for Luke and it's not the case for whatever future your parents envision for you.

One thing that is very interesting is how the tables have turned with Holden & Lily. Here it is Holden who has been been keeping Lily out of the loop and Lily being hurt because of it. Fast forward to the present episodes running in the US, and Holden is leaving Lily because *she* is keeping the secrets.
