Daft Punk used the Korg MS-20 for the lead Sound of Da Funk (The realy overuse the MS-20 even in Tron). What makes the MS-20 Special is a Highpassfilter with a Resonance. So to get the lead Sound asign a Highpassfilter to some Saws/Squares and then Push the Resoance realy strong. Modualte the Highpasscutoff with an Envelope and let it open during the Note. The Resonating frequencys pitchshift downwards this way to give it that vowelly sound. PLUR MrToBe
Hey guys, i'm a 16 year old dubstep/electro producer from the UK, give me a few seconds of your time and listen to my tracks, if you like skrillex, datsik, porter robinson or anything like that, you'll like my stuff, also subscribe to my channel, when i reach 100 subscribers i will start doing tutorials for sounds anybody wants to hear or request sounds and ill do a tutorial for them, please check me out, music has been my life since i was 7 years old <3
Thanks for the tutorial. You are a good teacher in that you don't skim over details, but take the viewer step-by-step through each element of the process. I like how the video zooms in on the mouse cursor as you move to different parts of the Massive program to make it easier to see the individual parts of the sound design.
What is the name of the software program you use to create your video so that you can zoom in on the mouse cursor as you made your tutorial?
almost forgot, dono any other musician o how it is how you spell it... that teach is tricks, thanks i have use a few of your ticks, but i think the best is just move everything till u find something... ha
They either used tb-303 or a sh-101 for the first synth in the song. The second synth that comes in about halfway through is without a doubt produced by a 303. To top off the sound they most likely used a distortion pedal, but it could have also been a some other distortion unit.
@DjRefunction He doesn't tend to, prefers to encourage others to make it themselves. Not sure, but think copyright gets iffy if you supply others presets
@bo0mk1d what?! first i'm busy, second i don't have a youtube download program because of hardware issues with my computer, so dont judge others. never.
@infinitysquaredmusic propably with an arsenal of analog synths, combining various filters. Im guessing its all physicals synth. Playing around with arturia's moog modular you can have a sense of what those beasts were capable of. provided you've got the money to pay for them of cource.
@infinitysquaredmusic It was actually a guitar riff done with a Fender Stratocaster (i think thats the guitar they used) but its cool how it can be recreated with Massive
@infinitysquaredmusic with better hardware than DAW's DUH original synths. are far superior thna today's computer programs all it did was get rid of the cables and tone in the process
maybe just some tutorials on how it generally works? like how you go about making a sound you hear? cause sure i can copy you and tweak it but i can never get the sounds im imagining :\
do you reckon you can get into trouble for selling songs with cracked versions of plugins like massive? Im scared to use my cracked version, but it has awesome sounds... lol
Try and make Knife Party's bass from Unison remix!!! or the high pitch bitch (didn't know what to call it... :D) it plays after the main bass... you'll know the one when you hear it.
@darrylmathew576 get 2 saw waves (try them both at some octave or 1 apart), then try some slight detuning, then send an envelope to the lowpass filter...all done :-) check out my 'deadmau5 tutorial in massive' and you will see what i am talking about with this technique ;-)
Not only did you just teach us how to make DP's "da funk". I think you also taught us how to make Wolfgang Gartner's Illmerica synth! lol 2 tuts in one vid. thanks ryan! :D
@nzmusic101 well you are very talented!!! i heard skrillex and the biggest names in electro have like 10 years experience! im only 13 and have like 4-5 months. i think its good that im starting early, ill have alot of experience by the time in skrillex's age, and the technology keeps getting better and easier to make music, im planning on expanding and buying a nice midi keyboard!
i hope you have a successful musical career, and become the next best electronic artist!!!
@TechnosaurMusic Massive works in a pretty standard way, these techniques can be applied to any decent subtractive synth. The Daft filter is just a driven 4 pole low-pass I believe, emulating the scream might be the only difficult part, but honestly I think the scream sound is a bit too prominent here anyways.
Still a great sound and great tutorial. No point in 100% matching someone's synth, just understanding the technique to make your own, thanks Enzed.
@MorrockW Um...I didn't ask anything, man. o -o I was just saying he should put 'In Massive' in the title so people will know it's how to make Daft Punk's 'Da Funk' Synth in Massive.
@TechnosaurMusic What I'm saying is, he makes it in massive, but you should be able to use these same settings in and standard synthesizer plugin, so the fact that it's in massive doesn't matter.
@MorrockW the trip is how close he gets to their sound with only massive.daft punk obviously didnt use massive in da 90's to make that sound lol. they actually used probably a bunch of shit(pedal, analogsynth, certain compressors, ect.)understand why this is impressive.

For @nzmusic101 and anyone else that is curious.
They either used tb-303 or a sh-101 for the first synth in the song. The second synth that comes in about halfway through is without a doubt produced by a 303. To top off the sound they most likely used a distortion pedal, but it could have also been a some other distortion unit.
SPIDERMANBATPIG 1 month ago
@SPIDERMANBATPIG
The classic "squelchy" sound that you are talking about is created from a lot of distortion, glide, and resonance.
How do I know this? Well it's because I know my way around the 303 and 101, plus I listen to a lot of acid house.
BTW great video Ryan.
