He had the time of his life with a7x, he looked so much happier preforming with them, even if he was the oldest, he was the highest energy. He had his fun. Dream theatre is his band afterall, he very well may come back now that he doesn't have much else to go

1. I highly doubt Mike will dumb himself down and become a permenant member of A7X.
2. Dream Theater still has Petrucci, Rudess, Myung and Labrie who all make up their sound, so DT is not dead.
3. Mike Portnoy isn't dead either, he's just on break and will probably end up coming back at some point anyway when he has his energy and enthusiasm back, just like Neal Peart did with Rush.

@goofball924 Portnoy proposed that the band should go on an indefinite hiatus but the band refused and were dedicated to continue the plan of writing a new album on January 2011.
I'm sad that he had leaved DT wich is one of my favourite bands and i will be sadder if he joins A7X because I don't like it, but I respect his choice. I hope that DT will have a good drummer and I think the only one who can match the work that portnoy did is bobby jarzombeck so I hope it's him that will remplace MP. Dream Theater is no longer alive for me. Dream Theater IS Mike Portnoy. It's just, a puzzle, missing a piece, with no other to replace it. That's just my opinion. :)

i think avenged sevenfold has had a big influence on this I mean he said he's been struggling with it for a year but i mean come on your touring with them and all the sudden you want to call it quits with DT. Hope they don't influence you into more things MP like drinking and stuff like that Mike cuz it would just be a shame.

He wants a break?! Maybe he shouldn't have filled in for A7X to begin with then!
Joining them full time would be the polar opposite of a "Break".
Not to mention that they are a bunch of make-up wearing posers that make pre-school music in comparison to DT.
Ah well, guess he'll get more money and more Kerrang features.

Mike, you inspired me to play drums when I was a child, now I'm almost 30, have a family and a good job, but this, this is like part of me has gone coz DT was my 3rd foot all over the years, I really whis the best for you on your new music journey

I have always and will continue to support respect Mike as an influence. What he did took alot of thought, and balls.

DT cannot fill portnoy's shoes,, he did WAY to much for the band.. it would be like Rush replacing Niel Peart ,, it would be an epic fail. I wish MP all the best and DT for that matter. but it wont be the same /R.I.P Dream Theater and Thanks for 25 years of Great music

@goofball924 Portnoy proposed that the band should go on an indefinite hiatus but the band refused and were dedicated to continue the plan of writing a new album on January 2011.

I'm sad that he had leaved DT wich is one of my favourite bands and i will be sadder if he joins A7X because I don't like it, but I respect his choice. I hope that DT will have a good drummer and I think the only one who can match the work that portnoy did is bobby jarzombeck so I hope it's him that will remplace MP. Good luck MP I will never forgive the day that I catch your wristband
