WOW this video has taken a load off of my mind. I have returned to college after being out of school for 30 years. I am taking a composition course. I love to write, but I could not figure out what a thesis statement was. Thank  you so much for clearing that up.

@3030Allen --I am a huge Graham Greene fan. A good movie was made of this book. You should watch it before doing your paper. Regarding a thesis for it, just start like this: "The Power and the Glory" presents humans in a conflict between . . . . [now just fill in with what you think are the major conflicts in the book. In your paper, discuss those conflicts one at a time]

@peakdavid It was helpful either way. I recently started this online English course for college. We have "live chats" but our teachers aren't always the best speakers. I usually have to go and teach myself what I'm supposed to do. I really want to teach computer programmer one day, so I appreciate the art of presenting information in a way that is easy to understand.

Interesting. Good luck with your course. To teach online, you'll need that Masters. The more beyond the Masters, the more employable you'll be. Online education is growing at about 15% a year, while traditional is flat.

Sure, it's a thesis statement--technically speaking. In the essay/article you would fine give characteristics of great pet dogs, then tell how the bulldog meets or exceeds each one.

But then, of course, you would be wrong because bulldogs make terrible pets, and I would have to write a counter essay on why poodles are the best family dogs. Sorry, but if you own a bulldog or a cat of any type, I will have to kick you off this thread.

After you state the topic can you say, "i believe that........" ? please answer as soon as possible. thank you for any help

Normally, the thesis is assumed to be the author's personal statement, so "I believe" and "I think" are considered redundant and weaken the statement. But there are times when you do see the "I believe" statement in writing. Depends on your audience and purpose and style.
