Please note, during WW2 a lot of Chinese women actually applied to work as comfort women, coz Japanese paid a lot of money for their service. But not all of them were accepted, they had to go through more than one interview, just like you apply for a job with IBM or Microsoft today. Well, I am not in the position to comment on if they liked their job, but one thing I'm sure that's nobody ever forced those Chinese ladies to work as prostitutes.

Make no mistake, the Japanese troops didn't intend to kill a large number of Chinese people during the war. But what else could they have done? The war was provoked by the Chinese. The Chinese soldiers dressed in civilian clothes and waged a partisan warfare against the IJA troops. It justified the Japanese soldiers to take harsh measures against the Chinese in every describable way. What the IJA did was legal, according to the Treaty of Geneva Convention.

The China Incident ( Chinese call it 2nd Sino-Japanese war) was entirely provoked by the Chinese. It took Japan just about a year to have China defeated on the battlefields. Nanking was captured by Japanese soldiers in a few months. After that the Chinese just refused to surrender, they waged a partisan warfare instead. That explains China's terrible human casualties as the Chinese partisans were not protected by the Treaty of Geneva Convention.
