It's not the Islands colours though, it's the Rep of Irelands. Nationalists in the "North" want to be seen as Irish and be represented by the flag of the Republic as it is not under British influence. We all know the flag of Northern Ireland (where McIlroy is from) and that's whay he used it. It was in the 1800's when people from the North of Ireland wanted to be apart of Britain (catholics also), most of them wanted Ireland to be one though but ruled from London. The majority of Irish Portestants still wanted to be known as Irish as well as British. Just like someone can be Scottish and British, Welsh and British etc. I myself as a British Citizen would call myself sn Irishmsn. It's not that I am from GB, but more about heritage and culture.

If I did a poll in the Shankill in Belfast and asked where King Billy is from, when NI became a nation, who created Protestantism, very few could tell me. A lot of it is listening to what your parents say and not being subjective and questioning your identity.
