Higher mounting gives you more "line-of-sight" with the targeting radar. If you do the math, one foot higher mounting gives you a few tenths of a mile extra, maybe even more than 1/2 mile. The average driver isn't likely to notice such a small difference in range, but it might help out in a pinch (detecting brief instant-on at long range).
It's better at detecting laser targeting vehicles ahead, since it can "see" through their windows better, etc.
Some people just don't know any better or they like it lower to the dashboard so people behind them can't see it. I was just testing this radar detector but I use the Escort 8500 and it is hardwired and mounted up high on my sun visor with a visor clip. This makes it hard for a cop to see if he walks up and is looking down at me. It makes it difficult for a thief to notice it because there are no suction cup marks on my windshield and no wires hanging down. Stealth is key.
Check out my Escort 8500 video to see how to mount a radar detector correctly. You should hardwire it and tuck the wires away, mount it high, and dim the display if you are using it at night. You don't want to draw any attention to yourself. Go to radardetectordotnet and learn about everything you could ever want to know about radar detectors, laser jammers, scanners, etc.
It's no so much the legality of it, it's the fact that cops will never want to give you a break from a ticket if they see one and thieves would love to smash your window for quick money. I prefer to keep it somewhat hidden because I don't like cops or thieves that want my money.
i just got rid of a cheap 100 dollar cobra an bought a whistler XTR-195 for 50 bucks at a pawn shop in new condition. are pretty much all whistlers better than the cheap cobras, or are there certain whistlers to look out for too? and would you happen to know when the 195 came out an what its performance is like compared to the other whistlers? any info would be great. thanks
I have a Escort the Causeway Cops dont stand a chance. I drive the bridge everyday.. The first KA alert definitly was not the cop at the crossover... Probably had radar on and turned the crossover...

@JAZZYtestsRDs Well then why in a lot of videos are the detectors posted so low? Thanks for the help BTW.

@JAZZYtestsRDs Well they aren't illegal in my area, so I actually don't mind them being seen....

@JAZZYtestsRDs Couldn't you take it down after you see flashing lights or when you go inside a store? That seems the easier route.
lawrencetimmons94 2 years ago
You could but cops don't take too kindly to people looking like they are bending down and hiding stuff under the seat.
