My mother is from the Curless family and says her mother and grandmother used to sing this song. Apparently it's kind of a family thing - first I'd heard of it, though. Thanks for posting.
Your song is wonderful! My Grandma sang it to us as children, and her Grandma sang it to her. She was shocked at how similar your recording is, to the way her own Grandma sang it to her. Great job! You also brought back many memories for my Grandma who is 88. Thank You!
I have tried so hard to remember the lyrics to this when I found your video. You brought back wonderful memories of my mother singing this to me when I was small. Thank you very much. :)
thanks for posting. Our mother used to sing this to us and we'd cry but always asked her to sing it again. My sister and I tred to remember the words just a couple of weeks ago and neither of us could remember. thanks so much!
My mother (b. 1934) and grandmother (b. 1910) sang this to me. I have recently learned that it is based on a poem/song from the 16th C. The olde English ballads have traveled far and wide! There are several versions on YouTube, but this is the closest to the way I remember it. Thanks for posting it!
Wow! My dad used to sing this to my sister and me. He died when I was 19 (I'm 38 now) and this is the first time I have heard it since I was very young. I didn't recognize it right away but when I did, I can't explain the emotional response. It's such a sad and beautiful song I often wondered why in the world my dad would sing such a song to us! But I am thankful that he did because I will always cherish the memory. Thanks for posting this and you sound wonderful.
@LatinaBookworm Wow...I didn't know it would become so controversial, lol. I only made this as a thank you for my family for being there for me and since my mother sang this version to us as small children I decided to go with that. I never claimed to be good at singing so it doesn't matter if anybody likes it or not. I just want to thank you, though, for sticking up for me either way. Thanks.
@LatinaBookworm Yes messing a classic song up is horrible! Come on now, she cant sing well! You know that! She sucks! Its plain and simple! I SAID I find it funny how she looks as if she can actually carry a tune. Get it right. Yes I can sing MUCH better than her. Im not a professional and I will post myself on the internet. Thats foolish! The girl knows she cant sing, yet she puts herself out there like this. STUPID! ksobye!
@LatinaBookworm Actually, the version she is singing is MUCH like other versions, however she changed versions in the middle. As far the singing, do you have ears??? If so, then there is NO WAY you can think that this girl sings good, shes horrible, I would rather listen to a cow giving birth! Not to mention the way she looks when shes singing, haha! She ACTUALLY thinks she can sing good!! FUNNY STUFF!! I can sing MUCH better than her, but I will not post anything, thats stupid!! ksobye!
oh my, not only is this out of tune, its the wrong words. EPIC fail! Dont quit your day job my dear.... you kinda remind me of a hog giving birth! NICE
My Grandmother used to sing this to my sister and I when we were little...We would cry every time but always ask her to sing it or sing it again even....I am so glad you sang this so I could hear it once again..Thank you

My great grandmother used to sing this to us. With that haunting quality in her wavering voice.
