also gangsta rap is life.. story telling..its harsh but its a reality.and i think its to simple to write it off as nonsense..even if this type of culture and reality was created by rich white males trying to destroy the black community (i.e. slave master mentality, introducing drugs into the community, low self esteem, kidnapping of black men who are now rotting way in our prison system)
Except Jay, most US people do not know our own history! It is sad what we are not allowed to teach our kids in schools. It is to a point now that most people have to educate themselves and many people "don't have the time."
Good points good points. i disagree with calling the government crazy bc of what they tried to prevent. there was some dangerous stuff going on, black panthers were feeding poor kids breakfast for free, you cannot tolerate this. it starts w breakfast ends with revolution.
Is it fair that you have so much sense & so many others – the ones in the public eye – do not. For the record, I agree – Akeys is not crazy or irrational for her thoughts on that topic. Black ppl have a reason to be suspicious of the government.
@kgsunshine And so do every people! let's not forget it goes deeper than race... It's just common knowledge that the ones with the most reason to revolt are the ones who have been most (obviously) hurt... but the system pits us all against one another... no matter our race...
President Hoover created the FBI with the help of the Bilderberg Group who has plans of financial world domination dating back to the incorporation of the "Federal Reserve Bank" (which abraham lincoln was against the creation of and was probably killed for)....these are the same people that killed MLKjr, JFK, Tupac, AND Biggie and is the real reason Spike Lee stopped making movies! they have highjacked the presidency at gunpoint for almost 100 years now, we need to free obama from their grip!
After doing research on Cointell Pro and the the South American Contras , Berriman Seale and Gary Webb I dont put anything past the US government. It pisses me off black people got the "internet going nuts" about Hov and the Illuminati when there are REAL evil groups out there. Tri lateral commision the Carlyle Group Blackwater, the Rothchilds Rockerfellers and Builderburgs just to name a few. WTF is the vitriol and venom for these fuckers ?
I'm with Alicia Keys She may be right. The government is so shady trust me I deal with them what she's saying is'nt impossible. There are lots of high officials and people who dont like black people.Even with Barack as president. Also I've got nothing but love for Alicia. And she stated that her statement was taken out of context i dont care if it was or not I'm down for her.

Wow I see I got 6 thumbs down for something I can't even remember. I prob said that Alecia was right. She's on the inside and you aren't. You really think they sing and rap about what they want? You gotta know something's up when you hear a hook like "Kill a nigga, killa nigga" from Mobb Deep or "Shoot em up" from Bone thugs...wait, Nas had the same chorus too! Meanwhile the Jonas Brothers are wearing their celibacy rings. WTF?
The music is no longer music. It is a Weapon of Mass Destruction.
lol, the whole premise is counter-intuitive, hip-hop is a derogatory and negative image of black people. It is the perfect tool to keep a culture repressed.
Hip Hop is just a form of expressing yourself. Unfortunatly i can go around saying how any genre of music is derogatory and negative. If you took the time out to listen to hip hop you'de see just how positive it really is
@bettertobealive They said the same this about Rock and Roll, Blues and I think Jazz. Not sure about Jazz but the other 2 I am certain of. I is what you make it.
Your videos are very well thought out. Few things on youtube are worth watching and few of them make you think.Good shit man. And nope she is not crazy.
Yo this is crazy but true. Music is the devils greatest tool cause it attacks the mind, body & soul of man. Drug use among young whites went up 60% when Em gained success in the late 90s. Where is he now? How about Marylin Manson or any other negative white musician that young whites embraced? They rap it & these niggas get killed or locked away 4 life tryin to live it. They are even attacking Ur kids! No? Whos Soulja Boy then? Who really listens to him. It is really a covert plot to destroy us.
I would think the more suspicious, paranoid belief would be that gangster rap itself is a govt plot to get blacks to kill each and scare whites into voting for guys like Guiliani. Didn't Eazy-E have dinner with the president (DUM DUM DUM DUM-dramatic music)?
Judging from the evidence... Alicia was not wrong for saying what she said.If the fbi could infiltrate the Black Panther Party and murder Fred Hampton, whats to stop them from murdering Tupac and Biggie. The govt. is very capable of killing people they don't like. Hell, it's the american way (i.e. the Native population, Malcolm X, JFK, MLK, its nothing new. The problem is when the larger society accepts the govt. story and ridicules anyone speaking the truth.
Well, after reading a book on how the CIA researched drugs like LSD, I am open to believing legitimate facts about the crazy ass things the government does with our money.
and for all of you people, she did admit that she said it, but she said that it was taken out of context, and that she didn't mean what she said. but she did not deny that she said it. And like she said, there is so much more important things to be focusing on like her new documentary "Alicia In Africa" that is not getting half the attention this is, and that breaks my heart
your right though, because people don't even know what was really said. Half of the people just heard it, and go with that. Go with facts, rather than what you heard
This is exactly how I felt...i'm glad someone could articulate it for me! Her statement may be wrong (but who really knows), but not completely unfounded.
What are you even talking about? What he had to say wasn't abusive or offensive yet here you are being completely undignified,is your life really that awful?
While I'm still inclined to see gangsta rap as a product of the free market rather than government conspiracy (especially given that I'm surprised when the government shows enough competency to pave roads, let alone anything more complex!), I find your vid very well stated.
I'd already shrugged her comment off anyway (as so many wonder about conspiracies that I figured she was just being human), but you're right, given documented history, it's not THAT crazy a thought.
Thank you sooo much!! Finally someone with a BRAIN!!! Alicia keys is one of the most talented artists we have. For her comments to be blown out of proportion like this sickens me!!! I'm ashamed to be an american!! Alicia YOU ROCK!!
No evidence and or good points to support your "racist" theory, you sure pulled that one out of your ass so you could point fingers and start up that dried up ass Don Imus topic again (who is so frickin' old he damn there owned slaves or was raised by people who did) - probably not, but just proving a point of why it's different coming from him. What an idiotic response. Yea, Alicia Keys is racist - especially towards her caucasian mother.
dude how the fuck is alicia keys racist? someone asked her a question which explains the reason why she is not "the revered wright of hip hop" (she sings r&b not hip hop). fuck! are u guys so oblovoius. she lives the life of an african american women, and even with her sucess she stiill faces racism. the media and shit just reports it as if its so crazy to think that race is still a problem in america. dont say sorry alicia, its ur opioion. . . .
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Uh? she blamed the deaths of Tupac and Biggie on white people. That sounds racist to me. And I really could care less what she said. It dosent bother me. What bothers me is if the tables were turned and she was white saying something about blacks, it would be a whole other story.
She never said ANYTHING about "white people"...stop making a misquote even more inaccurate. She's half white....If anyone can find me when and where she said "white people," ill pay you $2,000 through pay pal....Stop making this a racial issue.
she said she didnt say it why are you still choosing to believe it magazine/newspapers make thing all the time. And she is just as much white as she is pblack. Its just that some people choose to see her as black.
MIXED RACE is when a people of too different race have a child. Her father is black and mother is white. You are very ignorant to just see her as black. Why do you choose to accept the alledge comments of a gossip magazine. Its like you want to belive she said it or something. She said she didnt say it why would she lie and slate her own self as a MIXED RACE person.
now i personally think what don imus said wasnt racist. al sharpton made it racist. all he said was nappy headed ho. i can gurantee u that some of the teamates call each other stuff like that and even say nigga but they dont get mad, they saw the oprotunity tog et something our of it. if would of said "those nappy ass niggers" or something like dat then its racist. saying "nappy headed hoes" is not racist. taken way out of context.
It is a racist comment, but I don't think Don Imus is a racist because he said it. I give him enough credit to believe he's an idiot who said mean things. Al Sharpton is an Uncle Tom in sheep's clothing. He lives and dies on racial conflict, not on racial harmony. When something like this happens, it's his bread and butter. Can't you see that? People of all colors need to wake up and realize the wolf comes in all colors, too.
MAybe she's the only sane one out there. she's realized the truth..and now the government is trying to force people to beleive she's crazy in order to follow out thier plans without flaws such as people realizing whats going on!
Gangsta rap and other forms of music that are counterproductive to our community are basically musical crack. If you want to know who's behind it, follow the money. For every gangsta rap artist that made $1 off of a record sale there is a company that made $10-13. In reality royalties are much smaller than that unless you own your masters or a piece of the record company so you know what time it is for most rappers.
When you make it seem socially acceptable to do something (even within a small group like a minority community like the Black community), you increase the likelyhood that more will follow in those footsteps. Why is it that our youth nowadays seem to lean towards the streets moreso by default than in decades past? I'm not trying to put it all on gangsta rap, there is a failing of the parents in their responsibilities to guiding their children properly but BS is the norm nowadays and it's all in
If you've been alive long enough you literally could see the progression and the influences and what is related to what, and who are the ones profiteering off of the degeneration of an entire people. Hint: it ain't black people getting wealthy off of the exploitation.
Jay Smooth, I've been reading the Autobiography of Malcolm X. I'm not sure if you've read it, but do you think maybe the same branch of the FBI that did the weird messiah thing is the same branch that Malcolm X believed might have been assisting the Nation of Islam in spying on and eventually killing him?
illdoc1: I think it's really important to hear both sides of the story before people make any judgements. FoxNews only saw the Blender Article and were prepared to make a judgement on Alicia on TV before Alicia could comment on the article, this to me is wrong in court people HAVE to hear both sides of the story before they are allowed to make judgement but NOT in free society one side is OKAY!!!!
I don`t get what`s so controversial ? ! As a citizen you`re supposed to critque the governemnt, and question not follow like a lost puppy all the time . That`s how soceity improves and advances =/ SMH I wouldn`t put it past many governemnts of various countries these days to do sheisty ishh like this .
Media makes up anything to sell more, bring down respectable artists or pit them against the public, when they get too influential. Hasn't America always been this way? As long as the guy who pulls the strings remains in power. It's a shame.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Don't try to rationalize Alicia Keys paranoid nonsense. I think it's funny that the lightest "people of color" seem to be the most militant. It just sounds weak and small-minded of her to make such bullshit comments. Many people have lost some respect for her after this....not that she cares, but she just made herself look REALLY effing stupid. So does this guy for trying to give credence to Alicia's seemingly crack-induced rant in Blender Magazine. tsk, tsk.......
Obviously I disagree, and I think people are way too comfortable throwing around this type of judgmental smack-talk. There's no need for it and no justification for it.
Crack??? No you obviously don't know Alicia and how intelligent she is. How about b4 judging check out her statement to what happens....Americans just love to be negative towards each other so they skip over the truth
what the hell does her complection have to do with anything ? ! =/ parnoid ? smh in a coutry based so much upon race/racism and such I wouldn`t put it past the government or the random people behind the scenes controlling everything .
Why people so dramatic over this shit anyway? Alicia just said the NAME gangsta rap was oversloganized by the media and mostprobably the government. She never said Pac or Big were meant to be great black leaders and were stopped by the government.
actually the title GANTSTA RAP wasnt just oversloganized by the media, it was created by the media, ice cube wasnt just a gangsta rapper, he was a political rapper
My comment were meant to be a reply to mattrmc19, but I could not get to work the way I expected. Sorry for the multiple posts of the same thing.
Critiquing the misadventures of the American government and its effect on its citizens from minority backgrounds is not "selling out white people." Unless, as your comment seems to suppose, being a white person means that you are automatically a part of the government.
When are you gonna address the whole Jay (Hovah) pun intended illuminati rumor of beastly strength thats been gaining traction on the internets for a while now ? Since I regard you as some one less paranoid than I ..Im interested in your perspective.
@Aadonis219 True that! Jay Smooth talking about Illuminati... although I don't blame him from staying away from that cliché... it's a hornet's nest of confused paranoid lies based on almost certain but probably never-to-be exposed truths....
People who seek to impose racial stereotypes and social segregation would treat a man differently because he can understand the actions of those outside his own race. You may disagree with an opinion, but belittling the person just produces anger and hatred.
this white guy thinks that if he sells out white people and gives blacks an excuse for every dumbass comment they make, then he will be treated different. what a joke.

fyi, Alicia did two interviews today clarifying her "gangsta rap" remarks. You can listen to them on my youtube. Jay, keep bringing the level-headed hip hop commentary. Good sh*t.
Now this dude is worth watching! I really agree with him,he's somebody who knows what he's talking about. Now that's some truth for your ass. Who ever you are you are the bomb. you have a lot of sense, more than i can say for these other ignorant comments being posted. Good job!!!!
Well she cleared things up with by calling a few shows and issuing a statement. Just like I said she was taken out of context and that AK-47 pendent was a for a nickname that her Friends gave her. I can't stand the media lol.
This is 2008. We're not living under the same government. We're not living in the same political climate. We're not living in same social climate. And, Yes. Alicia Keys IS a crazy conspiracy theorist. Going by your logic, a person that claims Greece is a hotbed of pedophilia is not wrong to have those thoughts because Ancient Greece enjoyed some pederasty. You're a dope. And it seems that you've been poisoned by the "living in the past" bug. Your whole argument is a contradiction.
Yeah.. it's amazing how people want to believe that even the most immediate past has no connection to the present.
We are, of course, living under the same system of government as we were in the 60s and 70s.. it is run by different individuals and in some ways run differently, but the same institutions remain and the comparison to ancient Greece is inapt.
"We are, of course, living under the same system of government as we were in the 60s and 70s..."
You are correct, illdoc1. COINTELPRO was never disbanded. And you have to wonder about a media that promotes all these black rappers that say the "n" word. Yet they would never support a jewish rapper who called his fellow jews "kikes" in every other sentence.
8f2x0 you're right. This isn't 40 or 50 years ago. The government doesn't have warrantless wiretaps, we're not facing a long recession, struggling with racial problems, in a war without a clear end in site, an unpopular administration that doesn't care about civil liberties and is plagued by scandel. So much has changed! How can Alicia Keys be extra suspicious of the government at this point in history? Come on, it's all so different! :P
lol.. I gotta say: as someone who is Black/mixed but sometimes perceived as looking white, it's always fascinating to see the assumptions this draws out of people, about things like what it means to "be white" and to "act black".. America's relationship with race is one hell of a tangled web.
Not tryin' to spam on this link, but here is a small audio of Chuck D's thoughts on Tupac. The last little bit is interesting since it relates to Alicia Keys' mindset on this issue: watch?v=L6-pI3dJo6U
LOL I guess I refuse to throw Alicia Keys under the bus too.
I'll play Devil's Advocate here to stimulate discussion with this question: How much of a negative influence has "Gangsta Rap", so-called, had on the Black community and even the larger American community as a whole? Is it a causation or a correlation, or maybe a bit of both? I'm gonna state that it has had a negative impact because it's not so much a reflection of reality, but it's an image, a false one, that has alter reality.
I like the presentation. Like you, I understand where Ms. Keys is coming from. Hell, I useta be Ms. Keys, and Rev. Wright. Studying history, apart from what was taught at school, made me feel played. I became angry. But then I learned to focus. Instead of blaming a government, or an industry, I now name names. It's harder to get at, but pinning the rose on the correct forehead will take civilized society to the next level.
with the necklace and she is everywhere it her. its an interview and they talked about alot. They(the government,news/media) just trying to bring another person down..LOL the government investigated her back in 2004 for making a donation to the democratic party and publicly going against Bush. Jonah Weiner(the author of the article)hope u get another interview after this, yea u got this "talked about" story but celebs might refuse him or even Blender for that matter.
also when i read the interview i felt as if they took bit and pieces of different statements and then made them fit the story that they wanted to tell..this is also effident with the presidential candidates interview. Ultimately Blender Magazine got the coverage that they needed to get people interested in there magazine as they do every couple of years. The whole AK 47 necklace was what the black panthers did and thats what she was explaining she didnt say she wore it, her mom never seen her
its a debatable topic cause the government which controls the media (to and extent) gave the music the name "Gangsta Rap" not Tupac and Biggie it was a form of expression as which all music is. The media then helped to promote the music my giving it the coverage that it did and sparked the initial beefs between all the different coast(East coast/West coast. The media(news/government) also demeaned the music and did make it into this whole violent movement which it eventually went there
Well you can't blame it totally on the media. Some Hip Hop performers did exploit the exposure to push the Gangsta Rap along with more violent and misogynistic themes, which found a mainstream audience. Kevin Powell has an excellent article about it, and I think illdoc made a reference to it when he said Eric "Eazy-E" Wright sold people "Reality flavored cheeseburgers". LOL I still get a kick out of that phrase. Chuck D also talks a lot about the glorification of criminality in Hip Hop.
Sorry, continued. But Chuck D brings up a valid point that since there are only a few major labels now, they only want to focus on the Gangsta Rap, or Bling Crunk since that sells records. So I would say it's the more the fault of the control of the distribution being in the hands of only a few major labels who don't want to explore anything new. That's what is taking Hip Hop out of the mainstream.
Hip Hop is very mainstream, but "Rap" music is not as hasnt been for a while yea these people call them selves rappers but the music they make is HipHop. in my opinion rap is focused mainly on the lyrics but Hip Hop is more about the beat and the catchy hook.
I disagree though, Rap music already had violent themes long before Biggie and Tupac. Schoolly D could be called a Gangsta Rapper and Ice-T said he was influenced by him, but they called it Hardcore back then. Even Public Enemy could be considered violent with a lot of their songs, but they are tagged as militant. Then N.W.A. took off and set the formula which the media picked up on it at that time since they sold records without commercial airplay. Also the East Coast/West Coast beef (more)
was purely to sell records, Tupac even said as much. The media did hype it up, but they do that with everything. And plus this notion of Tupac and Biggie being future black leaders, if they'd have lived, again is problematic. No disrespect because they were both very talented and intelligent but there is no way to tell where they would be today. I would say, even back then, Chuck D or KRS-One has more gravitas as a community leader then any other rapper.
trent535 it's one thing to disagree with someone's views but to use racist and foul language just shows a lack of education, or something else psychologically negative is going on. Of course it could just be an immaturity thing and being racist on YouTube seems to be the new risque thing. If that's the case be an individual, go against the grain, get educated and provide thoughtful comments. Until then wa `Alaykum As-Salām.
the title "GANGSTA RAP" was not created by the rappers, 2PAC insisted that he doesnt make gangsta rap, he insisted that he makes "RAP MUSIC", not GANGSTA RAP
there's a lot of polemic around this, and i honestly share ur opinion.
i'm sad with the people that are prejudging her..she's been doin a lot for the world! she's the one i believe that can bring us together and not tear us apart! but aparentely, seems like we don't have the right to talk about what we think! we live (though different..lol) in a free country!for godsake!
anyway, thank u for that video, i'm happy i watched it :)
The distinctions you talk about here are important and often overlooked -- particularly, the distinction between being wrong and being crazy. Nicely done.
Wow, jay. I think it's amazing how you are able to turn a blip on celeb-news radar into a chance to educate us and foster discussion on topics far more worthy of our thoughts. Most on point vid since the one you did on T.I.'s arrest.
I just think it's hilarious that people are automatically saying she's racist when there is nothing racist about the comment she made.
I just love it when a very high profile artists isn't going to let the fame and fortune get in the way of their beliefs and saying what they believe in.
Kudos to Alicia whether you agree with her comment or not.
yeah there's nothing remotely *racist* about anything she said (or that rev. wright said for that matter!) whether they are true or false, making accusations of the govt is not racist.
We don't have to be a part of the BPP to recognize that the BPP was a part of us. they came out of us and strove to represent us, so i refer to them as "us"
also if you watch the vids, i usually use "we" and "us" for every topic, the whole connectedness thing..
I bet this will get alot of press but what about the documentary that Keep A Child Alive just released of her trip to Africa to help people suffering with AIDS and HIV?
Based on how she has conducted herself for most of career, I'd have to read the entire interview & not just a few random quotes out of context.
She has been outspoken when it comes to uplifting people and helping the less fortunate. So it's a little odd for all of a sudden she switches gears and goes militant.
I read the interview and it seemed out of character. I think the writer slanted what she said to sale more magazines and to come off as controversal.
Exactly. I don't even think her AK-47 pendent is to put down politics. People forget that her stage name initials are AK. Maybe it's a symbol to represent who she is as a person.
Haven't heard about this one with Alicia Keys. I know about COINTELPRO but honestly just because someone is a celebrity doesn't mean they actually know what they are talking about. You have to look at their arguments and what they are saying, if it has validity. The problem is celebrities get some special status just because they are famous. Famous does not mean Intelligent. However, I can understand why she would feel that way, I just don't agree.
also gangsta rap is life.. story telling..its harsh but its a reality.and i think its to simple to write it off as nonsense..even if this type of culture and reality was created by rich white males trying to destroy the black community (i.e. slave master mentality, introducing drugs into the community, low self esteem, kidnapping of black men who are now rotting way in our prison system)

While I'm still inclined to see gangsta rap as a product of the free market rather than government conspiracy (especially given that I'm surprised when the government shows enough competency to pave roads, let alone anything more complex!), I find your vid very well stated.

Yea, Alicia Keys is racist - especially towards her caucasian mother.

now i personally think what don imus said wasnt racist. al sharpton made it racist. all he said was nappy headed ho. i can gurantee u that some of the teamates call each other stuff like that and even say nigga but they dont get mad, they saw the oprotunity tog et something our of it. if would of said "those nappy ass niggers" or something like dat then its racist. saying "nappy headed hoes" is not racist. taken way out of context.
555MARCUS666 3 years ago
It is a racist comment, but I don't think Don Imus is a racist because he said it. I give him enough credit to believe he's an idiot who said mean things. Al Sharpton is an Uncle Tom in sheep's clothing. He lives and dies on racial conflict, not on racial harmony. When something like this happens, it's his bread and butter. Can't you see that? Alica Keys wasn't necessarally wrong.
Gangsta rap and other forms of music that are counterproductive to our community are basically musical crack. If you want to know who's behind it, follow the money. For every gangsta rap artist that made $1 off of a record sale there is a company that made $10-13. In reality royalties are much smaller than that unless you own your masters or a piece of the record company so you know what time it is for most rappers.
dealmaker007 3 years ago 4
When you make it seem socially acceptable to do something (even within a small group like a minority community like the Black community), you increase the likelyhood that more will follow in those footsteps. Why is it that our youth nowadays seem to lean towards the streets moreso by default than in decades past? I'm not trying to put it all on gangsta rap, there is a failing of the parents in their responsibilities to guiding their children properly but BS is the norm nowadays and it's all in
dealmaker007 3 years ago 2

Yes we live in 2008 but that doesn't change anything. There is always going to be racism. Some people need to quit thinking that we live in Utopia.
AliciaKeys4L 3 years ago
This is 2008. We're not living under the same government. We're not living in the same political climate. We're not living in same social climate. And, Yes. Alicia Keys IS a crazy conspiracy theorist. Going by your logic, a person that claims Greece is a hotbed of pedophilia is not wrong to have those thoughts because Ancient Greece enjoyed some pederasty. You're a dope. And it seems that you've been poisoned by the "living in the past" bug. Your whole argument is a contradiction.
8f2x0 3 years ago
mmm... no. What he's talking about was just over 40 years ago. While ancient Greece was... well... ancient. No comparison. What a poor argument.
mistahred 3 years ago
Yeah.. it's amazing how people want to believe that even the most immediate past has no connection to the present.
We are, of course, living under the same system of government as we were in the 60s and 70s.. it is run by different individuals and in some ways run differently, but the same institutions remain and the comparison to ancient Greece is inapt.
illdoc1 3 years ago
"We are, of course, living under the same system of government as we were in the 60s and 70s..."
You are correct, illdoc1. COINTELPRO was never disbanded. And you have to wonder about a media that promotes all these black rappers that say the "n" word. Yet they would never support a jewish rapper who called his fellow jews "kikes" in every other sentence.
wheelerX1X 3 years ago
8f2x0 you're right. This isn't 40 or 50 years ago. The government doesn't have warrantless wiretaps, we're not facing a long recession, struggling with racial problems, in a war without a clear end in site, an unpopular administration that doesn't care about civil liberties and is plagued by scandel. So much has changed! How can Alicia Keys be extra suspicious of the government at this point in history? Come on, it's all so different! :P

LazarusDurden 3 years ago

Jonah Weiner(the author of the article)hope u get another interview after this, yea u got this "talked about" story but celebs might refuse him or even Blender for that matter.
erockafella88 3 years ago
I agree. They did talk about alot and the author was the one who brung up gangster rap and called her a conspiracy theorist.
AliciaKeys4L 3 years ago
also when i read the interview i felt as if they took bit and pieces of different statements and then made them fit the story that they wanted to tell..this is also effident with the presidential candidates interview. Ultimately Blender Magazine got the coverage that they needed to get people interested in there magazine as they do every couple of years. The whole AK 47 necklace was what the black panthers did and thats what she was explaining she didnt say she wore it, her mom never seen her
erockafella88 3 years ago
its a debatable topic cause the government which controls the media (to and extent) gave the music the name "Gangsta Rap" not Tupac and Biggie it was a form of expression as which all music is. The media then helped to promote the music my giving it the coverage that it did and sparked the initial beefs between all the different coast(East coast/West coast. The media(news/government) also demeaned the music and did make it into this whole violent movement which it eventually went there
erockafella88 3 years ago
Well you can't blame it totally on the media. Some Hip Hop performers did exploit the exposure to push the Gangsta Rap along with more violent and misogynistic themes, which found a mainstream audience. Kevin Powell has an excellent article about it, and I think illdoc made a reference to it when he said Eric "Eazy-E" Wright sold people "Reality flavored cheeseburgers". LOL I still get a kick out of that phrase. Chuck D also talks a lot about the glorification of criminality in Hip Hop.
LazarusDurden 3 years ago
Sorry, continued. But Chuck D brings up a valid point that since there are only a few major labels now, they only want to focus on the Gangsta Rap, or Bling Crunk since that sells records. So I would say it's the more the fault of the control of the distribution being in the hands of only a few major labels who don't want to explore anything new. That's what is taking Hip Hop out of the mainstream.
LazarusDurden 3 years ago
Hip Hop is very mainstream, but "Rap" music is not as hasnt been for a while yea these people call them selves rappers but the music they make is HipHop. in my opinion rap is focused mainly on the lyrics but Hip Hop is more about the beat and the catchy hook.
erockafella88 3 years ago
I disagree though, Rap music already had violent themes long before Biggie and Tupac. Schoolly D could be called a Gangsta Rapper and Ice-T said he was influenced by him, but they called it Hardcore back then. Even Public Enemy could be considered violent with a lot of their songs, but they are tagged as militant. Then N.W.A. took off and set the formula which the media picked up on it at that time since they sold records without commercial airplay. Also the East Coast/West Coast beef (more)
LazarusDurden 3 years ago
was purely to sell records, Tupac even said as much.

They need to print it uncut
