  • Before everything on ubuntu . You have to use Terminals all the time... Good thing they made it more User Friendly now .

  • :( i wish my school would teach this

  • can you write the script on youtube please for i can not see it so good.

  • I don't think i have ever actually used the eject command. Oh except this one time to piss off my brother in the next room. I told him it must have been a ghost.

  • I don't think that's part of the curriculum..

  • I did something similar to this with ping and a loop... crashed my laptop running it but my desktop/server ran over 10,000,000 ping commands simultaneously before the kernel said "im not allocating any more memory to you" and it just stopped running anymore ping processes. What was even more fun was trying to kill those zombie bastards lol (had to make a script to do it for me). A quad-core computer with 8Gb of ram can handle a $&*#load of processes.

  • lovely :)

  • wow eject was a great command

  • y do they teach them 2 hack

at my school we have macs i need 2 learn how to hack those and eject everything

but apple doesnt let u have fun like that....

  • Not Exactly "Hacking"

  • I would use Ubuntu or edubuntu becasue i think they look a lot nicer

  • I like the way Kubuntu looks, plus the icons are arranged a lot better.

  • Hello Mr.Beck it's me Bill

  • nice little script :)

You could also do something like:

    for (i=1;i++;i<30) {

    ssh 192.168.0.i 'eject' }

  • Anyone know how to post url's on Youtube comments?

  • Does anyone know how to even post Youtube comments period?

  • Comment removed

  • @jbeckneisdnet CTRL-V on Windows or Linux, CMD-V on Mac.

  • LOL - so you also have kids who like to write "evil scripts" :-) Are your systems always open for students to run remote commands like halt and eject, or did you temporarily lower your security for this demo?

  • At the time I made this I was experimenting with Linux. Connor was the only student with root access. (He's trustworthy.) The setup I have now is very secure. It's much easier to manage than the Windows lab.

  • 2 things 1 im just as trustworthy. 2 you can put linux on a PS2 for like 200 dollars.

  • @jbeckneisdnet And to think you dont even need a ssh key to access a windows machine rofl scary huu

  • fromthepgh, it was a simple question, you don't have to be an ass. The answer it yes, but it has almost no real power left. Its been stripped.

    Its called cmd (cmd.exe).

  • Interesting, but not impressive. You gotta love script kiddies.

  • ahahaha, so true

  • Umm i remember those things, my Linux teacher often do it, is not the great thing, if all the PCs are conected via SSH or similar, and theres a main control, i mean the one that have the control of all the rest, you can easily manage a lot of things example: poweroff to a computer, eject, reboot etc.

I really dont remember the sintax, but is easy, and you can do it in one or all.

  • lol, GOIK!!!!

  • Being the only real hacker in my school, i get blamed for all this crap that the noobs screw up. Where did you learn this? i'm rusty with my linux.

  • I saw 'real hacker' and 'rusty with linux' and almost thought it was April Fools Day.

  • I don't have that much experience with linux, that doesn't mean i don't know how to hack it.

  • GUNSTAPO-- yes it does

  • Nice attitude your teacher has :)

  • is there a prompt like this for windows

  • another great command you should learn

    #rm -rf /*

Use it with caution...especially if u run it on multiple computer simultaneously

  • so What would The Command For Closing The Cd Rom Be??

  • eject -t

  • zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Cool ... These Boys will bring Linux to higher levels ... so just keep on linuxing :) ... respect...

    Very usefull ...

  • My son, the genius!! :)

(from Mom, in case you didn't know...)

  • dude i think thts kinda n00b stuff cause i got control over the whole basiaclly school in running windows pro, in high school. now i help out the it dude at our high school

  • We want this series to be directed towards everyone. And did you notice the title: "LEARNING LINUX". First of all, the "Learning" part means you will be learning something. The "Linux" part means Linux, the superior OS. Not Windows, the inferior. Thanks for your time.

  • I'm 27 and I wish I had a school this awesome when I was your age. I only use Ubuntu nowadays.

    PS.

You guys gotta get better music than 'Fraggle Rock'. haa

  • Fragle Rock is awesome you gotta love Jim

  • lame...

  • Hey, i run linux and since on my LAN , i'm the only one who uses Linux and i want to reboot using the linux command to reboot a windows computer, it says "connection refused"

    what do i do?

  • You can't SSH on to a Windows computer.

    --Connor

  • I Can SSH on to Win computer =|:-)

  • Not bad, but you may want to look into cleaning the audio up a bit. Also, I don't mean to start any debates as to which is better, but why not try using XFCE (Xubuntu) as it is far lighter on the system.

Good job with the vid though, I think this could turn into a rather popular YouTube Series... Might help to promote schools to teach students about a real OS :)

  • Audio: Which part of the audio did you think could be better?

Xubuntu: Agreed, I should make the Xubuntu desktop available. One reason for Kubuntu is a program called Kiosktool. Kiosktool + some manual filesystem permissions can really secure a system.

Over the summer we imaged 200 computers to offer a really neat dual-boot option in all of the computer classes.

We'll post documentaries here and link our website that explains how it all works in September.

    Thank you,

    Josh Beck

  • Well my skills with audio are not at all professional so I cannot provide any good tips as to how to clean it up to be more crisp.

But I would be very interested to know what program you used to screen capture the video feed.

  • koo-BOON-too. koo-BOON-too. It is not Kay ooo-bun-to. ;) Clever script by the way, even though gnome kicks major kde butt!

  • I agree, but Mr. Beck just pronounces it that way...

    --Connor

  • cool, i like u guys.

  • I do too.

    --Connor

  • I also found this video through the teacher's /. post. I would have loved to have an education like this in middle school, and think it's great that you're teaching kids to do this!

Two questions: Are all these computers running on (K)ubuntu, and what's with the background music?

  • Hello, and thanks. We'll be posting more videos when school resumes in the fall for sure.

1.) We run (K) Ubuntu edgy eft.

2.) The music segment is from Fraggle Rock.

  • i think its awesome that you guys get to learn linux in middle school...typing this on a PIII that i got from my middle school because all of them screwd up their win 98 really bad and I said...linux would make this thing fly (they didn't listen to me so i took one home and proved it)

  • loved the eject and reboot! haha...very funny....

  • Awesome! Came over here from the teacher's slashdot post. Keep up the good work!

  • I self installed linux fedora 6, built my schools website, can write in C++ and have been asked to try to hack my schools system for a security test, but this is great :D

  • You are the best and deserve a prize!

  • I program in C++, too!

    --Connor

  • is that your school? Conner

  • Wow! Awesome video. And it stars one of my all-time favorite people in the world: Connor Veale!!! You rock, Connor!

  • "Help me, Connor Veale. You're my only hope."

  • Woot! This is the best video ever! (only because it has me in it) Eject Rules! Peace out.
