I think this version sounds much better than the original, but then I'm not a big R.E.M. fan; Michael Stipe's voice can be really annoying. the guitar textures, drumming, and addition of new-wave-y keys are all a bit plus, as well as tom Smith's voice! :) I like the "weird" backing vocals.
Why the hell did they butcher the lyrics in the Chorus? It totally changes what the whole song was written about..... Love the sound, can't stand how they butchered the song lyrics...
In fairness his voice works brilliantly for this song. (Which is one of my top favourite R.E.M. songs). Definetely better than MCS' cover of Pop Song 89 (and i like MCS). Anyway, definetely a good cover!
People are generally always very quick to condemn a cover song. It obscures your judgement on the song itself, and in this case, it's a great version. Honestly, could you imagine any other artist or band doing a better cover of Orange Crush than this??
I'm loving this comment thread...if musical interpretation dies, civilisation dies.
Well done the people that have an opinion!
My personal comment is that a british band has made a sentiment our own and we are allowed to do that as long as American feel free to rip off Beatles tracks. (which frankly, they are welcome to)
Then I repeat my opinion. That's why I wrote "I feel."...... So people such as yourself wouldn't make snide comments like the one earlier. But I can see I was mistaken. Ettiquette is alive and well here on youtube, as usual........
They sound sounds great, but the background lyrics in the middle of the song are completely wrong. This song is about Vietnam, and I feel this version's background lyrics totally distort the song's meaning. Stipe's mumbling style of singing is a LOT harder to understand. But once you do, it really adds to the meaning. I feel this version takes away from it; adding your own lyrics isn't cool.
It's like listening to Motley Crue's cover of Anarchy, the song is so much better with some true talent. (Note: Sex Pistols have great vocals, just not instrument oriented.)
a good cover,i doubt they could do find the river though, then again REM would make an arse of when anger shows....so orange crush is appreciated by me for being interchangeable between these two fine bands
orange crush is an american weapon used in the gulf of the pigs. chemical weapon that made the local ppl impotent and the mothers of the new generations gave birth to the defective children.
Sounds too similar, there's no distinction so it's not that interesting. Kind of like the Editors in general actually! They're an allright band though.
Another plus for this version is the piano intro leaves you thinking "Hmm... a softer version of Orange Crush..." and then that trademark machine gun guitar of Orange Crush just blows that notion dead out of the water.
Also- my previous comment isn't a diss on the lead singer of Editors. I like his voice but I like Stipe's better.
Their version lacks the drive of the original, mostly because of the new oversimplified bassline and plainer vocals. They somewhat make up for it with more involved drumming.
This is weird :S I mean, I love the Editors, but Orange Crush was according to me REM's greatest song. Heard it a thousand times. Weird. But it's still bloody brilliant! Whoow Editors!
Im so fuckin in love with this band.

@sadlsore "big plus," not "bit plus," sorry. The only part I don't really like is the solo piano "dirge" in the beginning.

av seen REM do it live and it was poor.
both good bands tho.

i imagine rems live verison of this song would be better as tom smith has to do all the vocals for editors
saying that, it sounds as if it would be a difficult song to perform live due to the backing vocals which cross over with the lead vocals
120Vanquish120 2 years ago
R.E.M's live version of this is fantastic. Beats the studio version anyday, and this cover.

Sounds too similar, there's no distinction so it's not that interesting. Kind of like the Editors in general actually! They're an allright band though.
Keignat 2 years ago
Similar?? No!
1. Piano intro at the beginning.
2. More powerful guitars. Also it's two guitars instead of R.E.M.'s one.
3. The double track vocals from Smith instead of the Stipe-Mills harmony.
4. They change up some of the lyrics for the chorus. (Yes there is a chorus haha)
5. The monologue/bridge is not as audible as it was in the R.E.M. version.
Those are the 5 main differences in my eyes and ears.
Chr0nict0wn 2 years ago 3
I'm sure Peter Buck overdubbed more than one guitar in the original.
npbrain 2 years ago
What I meant though is he didn't play them at the same time. Unless he has some freakish ability I don't know about..

This version has more powerful guitars and drums. R.E.M.'s has better singing (Stipe & Mills) and better bass.
Musically I prefer this version, vocally I prefer R.E.M.'s. Overall I pick R.E.M.'s as the better one as it is solid in all aspects.
