  • Absolutely incredible. Truly amazing. No one has ever come close to matching this amazing lady's performance. She took the roof off that venue!

  • that was absolutely amazing. I now aspire to be like her when im older.

  • I love Jennifer Hudson, but I never really understood why this song was so acclaimed until I saw Jennifer Holliday sing it. All of a sudden, it made sense. Nobody can perform it better than she can.

  • Absolutely incredible voice and her delivery and emotion is pulled from the heavens! One of the greatest performers of the 20th Century and beyond. Singing this in 2005 and beyond, she still keeps me on the edge of my seat with amazement.

  • Is that Loretta devine?

  • ima name my kid Jennifer and hope she'll be a good singer like JHolliday and JHuddson

  • OMG her vocal cords will be bleeding after the show , how can she growl like that for 8 min :o it was totally powerful

  • Awesome. I'm crying and don't even know what I'm crying about. (That's just how great she is).

  • i'm wearing a warm turtleneck and my goosebumps are not going away.

  • @thequazify i dont no about that becuase jennifer hudson did real good

  • Greatest performance ever!!!

  • she is so beatiful, dream voice !

  • The passion she delivers on stage is beyond inspirational. Incredible. I'm speechless.

  • i know that aint lorretta divine

  • Privileged, to see Jennifer sing this in the 1980's on British TV. I was a teen, into usual music of that time. I couldn't speak after hearing this. This is the 2nd time I have seen this, and it has had a similar if not a more profound impact on me. 44 year old man, tears filling my eyes. Amazing, and thank you for posting this.

  • Amen, a new word!!! (see njp0513 comment)

  • I gotta say, I'm so glad I got to see this!!! J. Hudson is good, but for THIS song, J. Holliday hands down. This song calls for the growls, facial expressions, etc. No one should dare sing it any other way. Yea, some songs should be peaceful and fluent, but with this song you gotta clown!!! Think about it when you're comparing the two. You should think about the meaning behind it and be convinced when you hear this song and I must say when J. Holliday sings it, I'm convinced. When J. Hud sings

  • 5:55 ouch for him

  • Holy shit. She just ripped it for 8 min straight. I'll bet 95% of that torso is pure lung.

  • @tenorman86 You've got THAT right! And keep in mind- this is the Tony's audience- they give a rave, mid-song, just for the hell of it! Incredible!

  • @tenorman86 best comment ever

  • What a crow

  • man this must be old

  • I still get the hairs on my neck standing up... Sorry guys but NOBODY sings this like Billie ... BRILLIANT!!!

  • no offense but jennifer hudson is so much better

  • @bookthief15 You cannot compare Jennifer Hudson's performance with this. Not only did Holiday set the bar as the original but she sung and acted this scene out, LIVE, 8x a week and left the audience stunned, emotional and standing and begging for more every single time. Hudson's version of the song was pre-recorded (with multiple retakes) and she probably had several retakes during the movie film recording.

  • I wish they would put Dreamgirls "the play" on DVD with the original cast....

  • Saw her on Wendy William, she still has it!

  • Damn I'm getting OLD....I just saw in the paper today she just turned I think 52 or 53....I can still remember seeing her in the mid 80's doing this show...and then again in LA in 1988. I remember that because I took my mother and sister to see Dreamgirls....and Ms. Holliday rocked the stage. OH I am getting Older....I too am in my 50's! LOL

  • I actually felt myself almost crying....I swear down I've never felt that for a song before

  • wowwwww thats all i can say

  • HOLY SMOKES Loretta Devine looks soo different here it's almost weird..

  • Comment removed

  • @cooperdccooper same thoughts

  • woow!!she is a very strong singer!!! the quality sux back them!LOL

  • silly white folks still sitting in their seats.

  • WOW. I think i held my breath through this entire performance. Spectacular.

  • IS that loretta divine as laurel?????

  • is one of them loretta devine!!

  • @ridgecrestboy16 Yeah, Loretta Devine was the one that tried to break up the argument around 1:52 which is weird cuz I had no idea Loretta could sing!

  • @AtomicZero I knew it looked like her and I too had no idea she could sing!

  • @ridgecrestboy16 Sho' nuff is!

  • There is so much more emotion in her voice and acting then jennifer hudsons version don't get me wrong I long that movie and I jennifer hudson but this song is jennifer hollidays song

  • This is from the live segments of that years nominees of that year's Tonys. Astonishing. I saw it not live but from the tape a week later or so. '82 or '83 and all that followed. Love. Note the love from the peers in the audience in like the Mark Helminglsey Theatre or somthin' but they stay firmly in their seats. They jump off their asses now for some bit of X Factor okayness !Or a daytime talk show host!

  • omg, standing ovation in my room

  • WOAH HER VOICE IS.. OMG ITS SO POWERFUL!

  • 34 people are deaf.

  • OMG i'm 29 never heard the original until now and G.Damn she can blow I WISH I COULD BLOW LIKE THAT with such passion He better love her!

  • Effortless.

    Bravo!

  • 3:32 start button<=====================

  • wow.............................................

  • not to take anything away from jennifer hudson, but ms holliday sings it so much better. she has that special throaty, for lack of a better word, singing voice that just puts it on another level...

  • @crazeeboutmuzic There's a reason Jennifer Holliday *originated* this role. Nobody had sing in that style on Broadway before, and it took about 25 years before Hudson could do justice to it for the film.

  • That is truly raw talent.

  • I've never seen someone sing like her, omg, soooo amazing and unique .

  • perfect

  • does anyone else notice that she is not wearing a mic damn she's a chanter

  • You can literally see the song coming out of her FACE.!!!

  • Jennifer Holiday's facial expressions are OUT OF THIS WORLD.!!!

  • A grand performance from Jennifer Holiday, wish the creators of this play put this on DVD/Blu Ray.

  • What a blast from the past....I still love it.....I saw her on Broadway and in LA in this show.....and I was on my feet both times.......I'm Glad I found this it brought back lots of memories....I took my best friend Alan and my mother and sister

  • pffffttt. razzle dazzle! lol!

  • the best time anyone including her has ever sung this song!

  • Epic...! Beyond epic. We need a new word. :))

  • @njp0513 HOLLIDEPIC^^

  • ohh look at loretta devine aha wow she was baddd

  • she's 22 in this video

  • 3:30

  • Am I the only one who gets goosebumps watching this?

  • @TheMasterOE No, you're not the only one. I have watched this for years, and still get goosebumps!

  • One of the most memorable moments in broadway history!

  • @bleachbred That is one of those moments I'd love to have seen in person, without knowing anything about the show.

  • @bootes53 Me too!

  • what is the year plss ?

  • @1999rooney 1982

  • Still have that album, in mint condition

  • when I saw Dream Girl, in 1976

  • @tmowatt206 A pretty good trick, since it didn't come out until 1982.

  • If Jennifer Holliday doesn't prove that there is a spiritual soul inside of the body, I don't know who does. She sings with such passion ... such pain ... such intensity ... her performance is eternal! Words can't describe the emotions that resonate out of her soul. I saw her over thirty years ago on Broadway. I cried that night during the show, and I still cry as I listen to this timeless work of art ... Yes, I'm gonna love her - forever!

  • No matter how awesome and incomparable Jennifer Holliday is, I somehow always picture Ms. Piggy singing this to Kermit.

  • she owns it!

  • Black people are so talented :D i love them now and also their accent.

  • my God. MS Holliday kicked this song's butt! A-FRIKKING-MAZING!!!!!

  • This always gives me CHILLS... Wow, Jennifer Holliday was created by God specifically for this role. Who could ever doubt that? Who else could ever do it? No one. Sorry, Jennifer Hudson, your version was very good, even excellent, but this original version by Holliday was BEYOND EPIC and almost SUPER HUMAN. Definitely, Creative Energy from God flows through this performance.

  • Let give it up for this play all of the cast are gifted and talented , Gods gifted people.

  • @TheVisions888 Get a copy of the book _A Chorus Line and the Musicals of Michael Bennett_ by Ken MAndelbaum. It has a whole chapter on the conception and process of Dreamgirls. Yes, everyone in the cast was amazingly talented, but none so much as the creator, Michael Bennett. What we might have now if he hadn't died so young.

  • This is pure talent wow. And I love the way Jennifer Hudson captured the part. Loved it.....

  • Talent... Enough said!

  • OMG! Is that Loretta Divine??!! She was FINE! :-O

So it was Jennifer Hudson, Loretta Divine, and Cheryl Lee Ralph all on the same stage! Now that's a show I want to see! Damn!

  • wow she killed this song one of the best voice!!!!! i ever heard i love it....it makes me cry every time.............

  • So much emotion, power brava Miss. Holiday this is your song Miss Hudson I'm sorry but this one Miss Holiday owns

  • put me to tears.. the emotion and feeling expressed through her voice best performance ever.

  • This scared me a little but the good kind of scaring that jolts you back to reality
