yeah... nyc is disgusting in general, the longer i live here the more i understand and see things I never cared of before. I wish my fiance could find the same job out of this state.
Oh and to STBNY: it's not that we can't handle the truth, it's that we as new yorkers all like to rant and say bad things towards the MTA about the loitering, yet we ourselves throw crap on the tracks like a garbage dump. It's sickening!
It's sad, but very true. You can find every single stretch of track the same as this here video in NYC subway.. Im ashamed to say it's our subway, but besides the dirtiness of it, the system works very well, that is when it's not late, or there isn't some sort of contstrction on the tracks:D
love how the PASSENGERS use the tracks as their garbage can and then complain when its filthy. The mud carried along because there's a little thing called a WATER TABLE that rises and when it rises water enters the system. This is why we have DRAINS. The garbage is because of the pigs who ride the system everyday.
New york has a somewhat "unique" underground infrastructure, due to the shear amount of catacombs and artifacts from several eras still sitting under the city.
Let's see: the system was designed and built over one century ago. It was so well designed and built, that it STILL serves very well, and will not fall apart, not for centuries. Rails, iron, wear out and are replaced. Cars are replaced. People trash the tracks. They looked just like this in 1920. So what's the point? The NYC subway works, has always been grimy since after the first year. People ride it every day. It goes, and goes, and goes. It's "unbelievable", really, how good it all is.
Actually, in the 1970s the system was falling apart not just figuratively but LITERALLY and the transit authority had no funds to do any real repairs. That was also the decade that New York nearly became a "dead city". Fortunately, this reversed, and the system is still running today because they got the funds again to maintain it. Bottom line: A system will last for ever as long as it's maintained, otherwise it turns to shit.

NYC subway is the greatest Subway System in the world end of story. Chicago is second but NYC will always be first.
